For most headless Raspberry Pi builds that stream to YouTube around the clock, use a USB SSD if your exact Pi supports USB mass-storage boot and your power setup can handle it. A microSD card is the simplest alternative. If you use a Raspberry Pi 5, NVMe is another option, but it requires a compatible M.2 adapter. Streaming continuously does not by itself mean the Pi is continuously writing video to its storage: the storage decision depends mainly on the board, operating system, and whether you also record locally.
Choose storage for the work the Pi actually does
The boot drive holds Raspberry Pi OS, FFmpeg and its dependencies, configuration, logs, and any local media or recordings. The stream is transmitted to YouTube; it does not need to be saved to the boot drive unless your setup records or stores files there.
- For a straightforward setup: microSD is the common boot medium and works on Raspberry Pi models that support it.
- For a supported newer model and a more responsive system: consider a USB SSD, after confirming the board supports USB mass-storage boot.
- For Raspberry Pi 5: a compatible M.2 adapter and NVMe drive provide a model-specific storage route.
- If you record the stream locally: size storage for the recording bitrate and the number of days you want to retain, not just for the OS.
Raspberry Pi’s current getting-started documentation says, “Faster storage devices with higher read and write speeds improve the overall performance of your Raspberry Pi, making it run more smoothly.” That describes performance, not a guaranteed reliability improvement or a quantified increase in storage life. Compare the storage options
| Option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| microSD | The simplest boot setup, particularly when you want minimal extra hardware. | Choose capacity for the OS and files; confirm the card is suitable for your specific use. No general lifetime can be promised without endurance information for the exact card. |
| USB SSD | A supported Pi where you want external storage and potentially faster system performance. | Verify USB mass-storage boot support for the exact board, plus SSD, enclosure or cable, and power compatibility. |
| Pi 5 NVMe | A Raspberry Pi 5 build needing an M.2 NVMe drive. | Requires a compatible M.2 adapter; confirm the SSD and adapter fit the Pi 5 setup. |
How much capacity do you need?
If you are not recording locally
Raspberry Pi lists 8 GB as the minimum for Raspberry Pi OS Lite and 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS desktop and Full, and advises allowing room to grow. For a headless FFmpeg streamer using Lite, 64 GB is a practical capacity choice for the OS, updates, logs, and modest local files; that is a planning recommendation, not an official minimum. Raspberry Pi’s official microSD cards are available in 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB capacities, with C10, U3, V30, and A2 ratings. The published 4 kB random-I/O figures are 3,200 read IOPS and 1,200 write IOPS for Raspberry Pi 4, and 5,000 read IOPS and 2,000 write IOPS for Raspberry Pi 5. These are specific published card figures, not a guarantee for every card carrying those ratings. Raspberry Pi SD Cards documentation
Raspberry Pi’s official SSD page lists 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB drives. Those capacities are available options, not requirements for a streamer that does not keep recordings on the Pi. Raspberry Pi SSD documentation

Use consistent units (for example, bits per second for both bitrates), then add room for filesystem overhead and headroom. Multiply the daily estimate by the number of days you intend to keep recordings. This is an estimate method, not a benchmark; actual file size depends on the recording settings and format. YouTube’s ingest bitrate guidance is not necessarily the bitrate or format of a local recording.
Check YouTube’s stream settings separately from storage
Storage capacity and YouTube ingest settings answer different questions. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3–8 Mbps for 720p30. These are streaming bitrate ranges, not storage recommendations. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for secure delivery. Its encoder guidance says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” YouTube live encoder settings

Current India retailer stock, prices, warranty terms, and seller-level comparisons are not established here, so there is no defensible single “best value” listing to name. Search by category—such as “USB SSD for Raspberry Pi” or “microSD card”—then confirm the exact model’s specifications and return or warranty terms with the seller. For USB boot, verify compatibility with your Pi model and the complete SSD/enclosure/power setup. For a Pi 5 NVMe build, confirm the M.2 adapter is compatible.

Do not infer endurance from capacity or speed class alone. No comparative lifetime figure for unspecified cards or SSDs is established; consult the manufacturer’s endurance information for the exact product if write life is a deciding factor.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, you may not need a Raspberry Pi or its storage at all. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
