Start by testing the exact input path or URL with the same FFmpeg binary and runtime account that launches your VPS stream. Then check whether the input is readable, whether the installed build supports its URL protocol, and whether the problem occurs only when FFmpeg runs in the background. “Cannot open” alone does not identify the cause; the full error output and execution context do.
Capture the command and the first useful error
Keep the input reference and its -i option in view. FFmpeg’s command-line form places input options before the associated -i input_url; input formats are normally detected automatically. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Save the complete command and FFmpeg’s stderr, especially the first error mentioning the input. A later decode, encode, or output error is a different failure from FFmpeg being unable to open the input. Avoid diagnosing from a shortened message if the surrounding output is available.
Check the input where the stream job runs
For a local file
- Confirm the path is spelled correctly. Use an absolute path rather than relying on the shell’s current directory.
- Check that the file exists and is readable by the same account that runs FFmpeg. A file accessible to your interactive login may not be accessible to a service account.
- If FFmpeg runs in a container or service, verify its actual working directory and that the file’s directory is mounted into that environment.
- Run a minimal FFmpeg command against that exact path from the same execution context. Do not add streaming or encoding options until the input opens.
These checks help isolate path and access problems; without the actual stderr and runtime identity, there is no basis to assert that permissions, a mount, or any other one cause is responsible.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a URL
First verify that the URL is exactly the one the job uses, including its scheme. Then check whether the FFmpeg executable used by the job supports that protocol. On the VPS, run:
ffmpeg -protocols
FFmpeg documents this option as listing protocols available in its tools. Protocols can be enabled or disabled when the binary is built, so another FFmpeg installation working on a different machine does not establish that the VPS build supports the same input scheme. If the required scheme is absent, use a build with that protocol enabled or provide the input through a path the installed binary supports. See the FFmpeg protocols documentation.

Isolate input opening from the stream command
Test the input on its own before troubleshooting output destinations, codecs, or streaming settings. For example, substitute the exact input path or URL in this minimal form:
ffmpeg -i "/absolute/path/to/video.mp4" -f null -
This is a diagnostic pattern, not a guarantee that every environment or input will behave identically. If it opens and proceeds to processing, investigate the additional options in the full stream command. If it fails at input opening, focus on the reference, runtime access, URL protocol support, and the precise stderr.

When it fails only in a background job
FFmpeg normally checks for console input. For a background process, its FAQ documents -nostdin as a way to disable that interaction, or on Unix-like systems you can redirect standard input to /dev/null. For example:
ffmpeg -nostdin -i "/absolute/path/to/video.mp4" ...

Use the appropriate output options in place of the ellipsis; this is not a complete streaming command. This setting addresses console-input behavior, not a missing file or unsupported URL protocol. See the FFmpeg FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match the documentation to the VPS binary
Record the installed executable’s version with ffmpeg -version, and make sure that is the same executable used by the service or job. The FFmpeg Project notes that its online documentation is regenerated nightly and corresponds to the newest revision; an older VPS build may differ. Consult the documentation appropriate to the installed version when an option or protocol appears unavailable. See the FFmpeg documentation page.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| It fails in an interactive shell and in the stream job. | Check the exact path or URL, file readability, protocol list for URL inputs, and the first relevant stderr message. |
| It works in a shell but fails in a service, scheduled job, or container. | Compare the executable, account, working directory, environment, and mounts. Test the input from the job’s actual runtime context. |
| A URL input fails, while a local file opens. | Check whether the URL’s scheme appears in ffmpeg -protocols for the binary used by the job. |
| The job behaves differently when run in the background. | Check whether console input is involved; try -nostdin or, on Unix-like systems, redirect standard input to /dev/null. |
| The online documentation describes an option that the VPS binary does not recognize. | Check ffmpeg -version and use documentation corresponding to that installed version. |
These are diagnostic branches, not claims about a particular VPS provider or a universal root cause. URL authentication, network routing, provider restrictions, mounts, and permissions require evidence from the specific environment and error output.
Or let it run in the cloud

Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
