You can broadcast prerecorded videos as a YouTube Live stream by connecting an encoder to a stream created in YouTube Studio. For a playlist that runs continuously, the encoder—not YouTube—must play and repeat the videos. YouTube documents how to create a stream and connect an encoder, but its official guidance does not specify current OBS playlist and looping steps or guarantee unattended recovery. This guide separates the documented YouTube setup from the software-specific parts you must verify.
Check channel eligibility and video rights first
Before configuring playback, confirm the channel can go live and that you have permission to broadcast every video and audio track in the playlist.
- Your channel must be verified, must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. First-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube says licensed content may still require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself does not ensure the live stream will avoid interruption. See YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming copyrighted content.
- Keep records of permissions and confirm they cover the intended platform, territory, duration, and live use. Do not assume that permission to upload a video also covers broadcasting it live.
Choose how the encoder will run
YouTube’s encoder workflow supports streaming software running on a computer as well as standalone hardware encoders. A software encoder is the route to investigate when you need to compose a stream from prerecorded sources; the computer, encoder, and network must remain available for the broadcast to continue. YouTube also identifies standalone hardware encoders, but the official material reviewed here does not establish that one can play your particular playlist without a separate computer.
| Option | What YouTube’s documentation establishes | What to verify for your playlist |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder on a computer | YouTube describes encoder apps on computers and a workflow that connects an encoder to a stream. | Whether the current software version supports local playlists, repeat playback, and recovery after playback, computer, or network interruptions. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | YouTube lists standalone hardware encoders and recommends professional-grade encoders for higher-production events. | Whether the specific model supports media playback and looping, and how it handles recovery, remote monitoring, and interruptions. The reviewed guidance does not say dedicated hardware is required for prerecorded video. |
YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started. Its documentation does not establish a minimum computer specification, resolution, bitrate, or storage device for this use case, so choose settings based on the encoder and source rather than treating an unsupported specification as a requirement. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create or schedule the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live. Create a stream or schedule one in the Manage tab of Live Control Room. Review the current visibility and stream settings for the event.
- Copy the stream’s YouTube server URL and stream key into the corresponding connection fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or public setup instructions.
- Start the encoder’s output and wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, follow the current Studio prompts and go-live controls; settings such as automatic start and the visible controls can vary.
- Check the preview before directing viewers to the event. YouTube’s step-by-step flow is in its encoder setup guide.
Configure playlist playback in your encoder
The playlist and repeat behavior belong to the encoder or playback system, not to YouTube Studio. YouTube’s official setup guidance explains the encoder connection, but the sources reviewed do not establish which current OBS source type plays a local playlist, how to make it repeat indefinitely, what happens at the end of the list, or whether playback resumes after a decoder or computer interruption.
Before relying on a software-specific procedure, consult documentation for the exact encoder and version you use. Confirm that it can play the required files in sequence, repeat them without an unintended gap, preserve the intended audio, and resume—or alert an operator—after a failure. Do not treat a successful initial connection as proof that a playlist will keep running unattended.

Test the stream and plan for interruptions
Before leaving a broadcast running, verify the whole path from playlist playback to the viewer-facing stream. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview, verifying that viewers can access the event on channel and watch pages and on mobile, and monitoring audio and video. If your setup includes a backup encoder, test the configured failover rather than assuming it works.
- Confirm the correct video and audio play in the preview and that the stream appears where intended.
- Test what happens when a video ends, the playlist reaches its final item, and the encoder or network is interrupted.
- Decide who will respond to a copyright notice, playback failure, dropped connection, or stream that reaches its end state.
- Keep monitoring available. Google’s API documentation describes a 24/7 broadcast model in which one live stream can continue feeding a broadcast while another broadcast is created for a segment of the same feed. This describes the platform’s continuous-broadcast model; it is not a guarantee of uptime or a playlist tutorial. See Google’s Live Streaming API documentation.
Plan separately for the replay archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a stream running longer than 12 hours will produce a complete replay. If retaining a full recording matters, check YouTube’s current guidance and plan around the stated limit—for example, decide whether to rotate streams or separately record the source material.
