Use a system-level systemd service to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. Give the service its own Linux account, a defined working directory, a protected stream-key file, and journal logging. Then verify the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room: a service marked “active” only proves that a local process is running, not that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
systemd manages FFmpeg on your Linux machine: it can start the process after boot, restart it after a failure, and provide a consistent place to inspect its logs. It does not repair a bad stream key, missing media, an unsuitable encoder configuration, a failed network connection, or a YouTube broadcast that has ended or been rejected.
This setup is for a Linux host with FFmpeg installed, a source such as a video file or live input, and a YouTube Live broadcast configured in Live Control Room. You remain responsible for the host’s power, network, storage, files, and maintenance.
Prepare the host and protect the stream key
- Check FFmpeg and its path. The example below assumes FFmpeg is at
/usr/bin/ffmpeg. Confirm your installed binary path and that its build supports the protocols and codecs you intend to use. - Create a dedicated service account and working directory. The sample values are a Linux account named
streamand a directory under/srv/stream. Use paths and account names that exist on your machine, and make sure the service account can read the media and any required configuration. - Configure the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the current RTMPS ingest address and stream key for the broadcast. Use those values rather than an old URL copied from an example.
- Put the key in a protected environment file. Keep it out of a broadly readable unit file, command line, and shell history. Store the file under root control with restrictive permissions, then grant only the service the access it needs. Never publish a real key; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your broadcast.
The exact paths, account permissions, installed FFmpeg build, media source, and broadcast settings vary by host. Treat the values that follow as a template, not universal defaults.

Build the FFmpeg command for YouTube
For a file source, FFmpeg documents this real-time streaming shape:
ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
For your YouTube broadcast, use the current RTMPS address and stream key from Live Control Room in place of the example destination. Adapt the input, codecs, rate control, and output arguments to the media and stream settings you need. The example is not a complete YouTube encoder profile: do not assume its placeholder URL or unspecified encoding settings are ready to use.
Choose compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate.

| H.264 example | YouTube minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular host or connection can sustain the stream. YouTube also recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. Test with similar audio and motion before going live, choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast.
Use RTMPS and the current ingest address
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL and recommends the encrypted protocol. Retrieve the actual RTMPS address and key in Live Control Room; do not substitute a hard-coded address from an older tutorial. YouTube’s API documentation describes primary and backup ingestion addresses and explains that a tool may combine the stream URL and stream name as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the address and key format shown for your broadcast.
Create a systemd unit
Create a system-level unit for the stream, using the service account, working directory, protected environment file, and FFmpeg command you prepared. A representative unit should declare a simple service, an explicit user and group, a working directory, an environment file, an ExecStart command, restart behavior with a delay, explicit stop handling, and journal output. The corresponding example is in StreamNeo’s guide to running FFmpeg as a systemd service.
Replace every example path, account, input, and destination with your actual values. Keep the real stream key in the protected environment file rather than writing it into the unit. Configure the FFmpeg command to match your selected source and encoder settings; do not copy bitrate or GOP values as if they were right for every video.

Set a restart policy with a delay
Configure the service to restart after an unexpected FFmpeg exit and include a delay between attempts. A delay avoids an immediate, rapid restart loop when a persistent problem causes every attempt to fail. Restart behavior applies to the local process; it does not make an invalid key, broken input, unsupported configuration, or unavailable YouTube broadcast work.
Reload and start the service
- Save the unit under the system’s system-level service configuration, with permissions appropriate for a system service.
- Ask systemd to reload unit definitions after creating or changing the file.
- Enable the unit to start at boot and start it now.
- Check the unit status and recent journal entries. Use the service name you assigned to the unit in each command.
Because local paths and service names differ, use the names you configured rather than copying a command that assumes a particular unit filename.
Verify the stream at both ends
Check the local service and the remote broadcast separately. A systemd status showing a running FFmpeg process does not establish that viewers can watch the stream.
- Local process: inspect the unit’s status and journal output to see whether FFmpeg started, what it reported, and whether it exited or restarted.
- YouTube ingest: open the broadcast in Live Control Room and inspect its preview, stream health, and any configuration messages.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes stream states such as active, ready, inactive, and error, and reports health states and configuration issues. A local process state and YouTube’s remote stream state describe different parts of the chain.

Troubleshoot common failures
The service will not start, or restarts repeatedly
Read the unit’s journal and status for the specific FFmpeg error. Confirm the binary path, unit configuration, working directory, media path, and permissions for the service account. A restart policy can repeat a failed attempt; it cannot correct a missing file or an invalid command.
FFmpeg runs, but YouTube shows no healthy stream
Check the exact RTMPS server address and stream key in Live Control Room, then compare them with the service’s protected configuration. Confirm that the broadcast is still available and inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages. Do not treat a live local process as proof that the remote ingest is healthy.
An RTMPS connection reports an SSL or protocol error
Verify that both the protocol and server are the current RTMPS values from Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance suggests trying port 443 for some SSL errors and checking whether the installed encoder build supports RTMPS. Do not replace the current ingest address with a remembered URL.
The stream starts but drops, buffers, or reports health issues
Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and compare your chosen video bitrate with the upload capacity the connection can sustain. Confirm that the selected codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings match YouTube’s guidance and that the source is suitable. YouTube recommends testing with similar motion and audio before the broadcast; systemd cannot compensate for an inadequate network path or incorrect encoding settings.

FFmpeg restarts after the broadcast has ended or been rejected
A process restart is not the same as restarting a valid YouTube broadcast. Check the broadcast state and messages in Live Control Room before relying on another local FFmpeg attempt. If the remote broadcast has ended or the key or stream configuration is rejected, resolve that condition at YouTube’s end first.
Choose between a self-managed host and cloud operation
A systemd host gives you direct control of the Linux environment, media files, and FFmpeg configuration. In return, you maintain the machine, network, power, storage, and service configuration. If your main requirement is to turn off your own computer and not maintain a Linux streaming host, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to consider first: it keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos without depending on your home computer.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud handles looping, so nothing has to stay on at home. The service streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
