The documented Ubuntu route uses OBS with a desktop environment; the sources available here do not establish a reliable headless OBS or command-line setup, so do not treat an encoder process left running as a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service.
Before you set up the server
Check channel eligibility first. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its getting-started guidance also states a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming. Confirm that the channel can go live before spending time configuring Ubuntu.
- Decide whether the stream will play prerecorded video, a generated scene, or another continuously available audio/video source. Whatever the source, it must keep producing valid audio and video; an ended file or blank scene can interrupt the intended program.
- Choose where the server will run: at your location or on a hosted machine. Compare sustained outbound bandwidth, network and power resilience, encoder hardware support, monitoring access, and cost. For a hosted machine, check the provider’s current acceptable-use policy for continuous encoder traffic and verify the available CPU, GPU, and bandwidth before relying on it.
- Plan for failures. Power, the operating system, encoder, source media, ISP, router, or YouTube ingest can interrupt a stream. Monitoring and a tested recovery plan matter as much as starting the encoder.
Install OBS on Ubuntu
Use a supported Ubuntu version
The OBS Project’s download guidance identifies Ubuntu 24.04 and newer for its official PPA installation route. Distribution and version support can change, so check the OBS Project’s current download page before installing. Run these commands in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studiosudo apt updatesudo apt install obs-studio
This is a GUI-oriented setup: OBS is a desktop application, and the documented Linux guidance here does not establish a headless server recipe or a tested service-manager configuration. If your Ubuntu Server has no desktop environment, do not assume that installing OBS alone will turn it into a robust background daemon. Use a separately validated headless encoder and process-supervision approach if that is a requirement.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare the media source
Open OBS and create a scene for the program. Add a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable its Loop setting so playback starts again after the file ends. OBS for Linux supports local video and audio files in Media Source. For a program with multiple clips or visual elements, arrange and test the scene before connecting it to YouTube.
Play the scene in OBS long enough to confirm that video and audio continue correctly, including at the point where a looping file returns to its beginning. A loop repeats content; it does not by itself restart OBS after a crash, restore a failed network connection, or recover a YouTube ingest interruption.

Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream, then locate its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s workflow is to copy these details into the encoder before sending the feed.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with access may be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In the stream settings, select YouTube or the appropriate custom service option, then enter the server URL and key shown for that stream. Prefer the RTMPS URL when available; do not assume a displayed RTMP address is encrypted.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the intended picture and sound, and review stream health before making the broadcast public or starting the scheduled event.
YouTube advises setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before a scheduled event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. For an initial launch, use that lead time to check the preview, stream health, and any applicable failover arrangements rather than discovering a configuration issue after viewers arrive.
Choose compatible video, audio, and bitrate settings
Use the profile appropriate to the resolution and frame rate you actually plan to send. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant-bitrate (CBR) encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval must not exceed four seconds. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection to YouTube’s ingest service.

| H.264 profile | YouTube-listed minimum video bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations for the profiles shown, not a universal bitrate table for every codec, resolution, or frame rate. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for the exact profile you select; higher resolutions and frame rates have different recommendations. Set the encoder to CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and choose an audio codec YouTube accepts. The material cited here does not specify an audio bitrate, so do not infer one from the video figures.
Allow upload headroom
Your server’s upload capacity must sustain the selected stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare upload bandwidth, and warns that shared networks may limit the capacity available to an individual stream. For example, a 10 Mbps video bitrate calls for roughly 12 Mbps of available upload capacity if you preserve 20% headroom. Measure the connection at the server’s actual network location and test under representative load; a speed result from another device or time may not reflect the bandwidth available to the encoder. Ethernet can be a sensible link from server to router, but a wired connection does not guarantee that the ISP or wider network will stay up.

What “nonstop” requires in practice
An encoder that remains open is only one part of a continuous broadcast. The machine must stay powered, Ubuntu and OBS must remain healthy, the source must continue producing media, the network must maintain sufficient upload capacity, and YouTube must continue receiving the feed. Any of these can fail.
- Test the complete playback and ingest path before relying on it, including a loop boundary and a representative period of network use.
- Monitor both the server and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. A running application is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Decide how you will notice and recover from a stopped encoder, failed source, server restart, or lost connection. The official setup guidance cited here does not guarantee automatic OBS reconnection or define a tested Ubuntu service-manager recipe.
- If you need a genuinely unattended deployment, validate the encoder, restart behavior, and monitoring on your own Ubuntu version and hardware before treating it as production-ready.
Archive limits and content rights
Do not assume one 24/7 session will produce a complete archive
YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a complete archive for one 24/7 session. Test the archive workflow against the length you intend to run and make a separate recording or archive plan if a complete copy matters.

Use material you have permission to stream
Before going live, confirm that you have the rights needed for every video, music track, image, and other element in the program. Copyright restrictions can affect whether content remains available. If monetization matters, remember that permission to use material and eligibility under YouTube’s reused-content monetization rules are separate questions; review the rules that apply to your channel and content rather than assuming that a looping playlist qualifies.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep an Ubuntu machine and home connection running, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first: it keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer can be off.
Each slot includes one always-on YouTube stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
