What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single correct bitrate for every 24/7 YouTube stream. Choose YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate, then test it on the upload connection that will carry the stream. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Those are platform recommendations, not guarantees that your internet connection or FFmpeg setup can sustain them.
Choose a bitrate for the exact stream format
YouTube’s live-ingest bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Select the matching row and codec column in its live encoder settings and bitrate table; do not substitute YouTube’s separate upload-encoding recommendations.
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p30 | Not stated in the cited YouTube table summary | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p60 | Not stated in the cited YouTube table summary | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p30 | Not stated in the cited YouTube table summary | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 1080p60 | Not stated in the cited YouTube table summary | 12 Mbps |
The YouTube Help page does not show a publication or update year; these figures were accessed in 2026. Check its current table for your exact format before configuring a stream, particularly for resolutions or codec combinations not shown here.
Match the settings, not just the number
A bitrate recommendation is meaningful only when the stream uses the corresponding codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live encoding, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Do not apply an H.264 recommendation to an AV1 or HEVC stream: use the matching codec column in the live table.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set the encoder parameters YouTube recommends
- Rate control: CBR, or constant bitrate.
- Keyframes: every two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds between keyframes.
- Transport: RTMP or RTMPS is supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Resolution and frame rate: make them agree with the bitrate row you selected. YouTube Live Control Room detects resolution and frame rate automatically by default; a custom stream key can be configured for manual settings.
See YouTube’s live encoder settings and stream settings guidance for the current setup details. Obtain the ingest URL and stream key through YouTube’s live setup and keep the key private.
Test the upload link before leaving the stream on
- Measure the actual outbound connection. Run an upload-speed test on the connection the FFmpeg process will use. The bitrate table does not guarantee that a particular line can sustain a constant upload at that rate, and YouTube does not specify one universal headroom multiplier.
- Run a representative test stream. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and bitrate, with movement and sound similar to the real program. YouTube advises testing before the event with representative audio and motion.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Confirm that the live preview and health indicators show successful ingest. Monitor stream-health messages during operation rather than assuming that a successful FFmpeg start means viewers receive a healthy stream.
- Observe the long-running process. For a 24/7 setup, monitor FFmpeg logs and output interruptions, alert on process exit or sustained loss of output, and document how the process is restarted and how an operator verifies that YouTube is ingesting again.
YouTube’s recommendations and monitoring advice do not establish a universal upload-speed margin, required restart policy, hosting provider, or uptime level. Test the specific connection and deployment instead of treating the published bitrate as a service-continuity guarantee.

Use FFmpeg for real-time RTMP output and recovery
FFmpeg documents RTMP output and the -re option for reading a file at real-time speed, with FLV output sent to an RTMP destination. A basic shape is:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative starting point for H.264 1080p30, not a ready-to-run command for every file, encoder, FFmpeg build, or YouTube ingest endpoint. The example’s 14 Mbps video target corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 1080p30 recommendation; the 30 fps output and 60-frame keyframe interval express a two-second interval at that frame rate. Confirm the available encoder and its options in your installed FFmpeg build, verify the actual output properties, and use the ingest URL and key supplied by YouTube. Replace the example destination without exposing the key in public logs or shared scripts.

For a different target, change the output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to match one another. The actual output must match the row used to select the bitrate; setting a number alone does not make the stream 1080p30 or guarantee a particular codec.
What FIFO recovery can and cannot do
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation includes a recovery example that can continue processing after a temporary network failure and attempt recovery at one-second intervals. FIFO can be one part of a resilient output path, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted viewer playback, guarantee that YouTube will reconnect on a particular schedule, or replace testing. Adapt the documented options to your inputs and installed build, then deliberately test how your process behaves during a network interruption.

For a 24/7 operation, treat recovery as a component in a monitored process: detect an exit or sustained output interruption, restart according to your own operational policy, and check YouTube’s live status after recovery. The documentation does not prescribe one supervisor, machine, restart policy, or hosting provider for every deployment. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg options and muxer documentation for supported behavior and syntax.

| Symptom | Likely issue to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the preview is unstable | The upload connection may not sustain the selected rate, or the configured output may differ from the selected format. | Recheck measured upload performance, confirm codec/resolution/frame rate/bitrate, and test with representative audio and motion. |
| The stream connects but the image does not match the intended quality or frame rate | Encoder output properties may not match the selected bitrate-table row. | Inspect the actual FFmpeg output settings and compare them with YouTube’s current live table. |
| FFmpeg exits after a network interruption | The process may not be configured to recover, or its recovery path may not handle this failure mode. | Review FFmpeg logs, test the FIFO recovery behavior for the installed build, and verify your process restart and operator-check procedure. |
| FFmpeg sends output but YouTube does not ingest it | The configured ingest URL, stream key, or stream setup may be wrong. | Copy the current URL and key from YouTube’s live setup, keep the key private, and verify the live preview and health status. |
| A bitrate copied from another guide behaves unexpectedly | The value may refer to a different codec, frame rate, resolution, or upload-encoding workflow. | Use YouTube’s live-ingest table and select the exact codec and format row. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded video without keeping an FFmpeg computer and home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
