To make pre-recorded video appear in a YouTube Live event, you need to send it through a live-streaming workflow, such as an encoder. YouTube does not document a built-in control that converts an ordinary playlist into a live broadcast.
Looping a playlist is different from going live
A playlist loop repeats videos for the viewer who has opened the playlist. It does not create a live event, broadcast a feed in real time, or provide the live-event experience. YouTube describes live streaming as broadcasting media in real time and documents playlist looping separately (Loop videos or playlists on YouTube; Learn about live streams).
If you only want continuous playback on a screen, use the playlist loop. If you want a live watch page or real-time chat, you need to start a live event and send it a live feed.
How to repeat a YouTube playlist
- Open a video that belongs to the playlist.
- Expand the playlist box beside or below the video.
- Select Loop in the playlist controls.
YouTube documents separate repeat behavior for television and gaming-console playback. The loop setting repeats playback; it does not turn the playlist into a live stream.

How to broadcast pre-recorded video as a YouTube Live event
For a live event, YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder streaming. To broadcast pre-recorded material, use a playback source and encoder that can send the video as a live feed; YouTube’s encoder workflow is not a playlist-conversion feature.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream in Live Control Room. Scheduling makes an upcoming event page, not an active broadcast.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key.
- Enter those details into your encoder or streaming software, and configure the video source to play the recordings you want to broadcast.
- Start the encoder so it sends the feed to YouTube. Check the Live Control Room preview and start the event when ready.
YouTube says scheduling through the Live Control Room’s Manage tab can make an upcoming stream visible, let you share its URL, and allow viewers to set a reminder. A Premiere is different again: it presents a new video for viewers to watch together in real time, rather than continuously broadcasting a playlist.

Eligibility and live-stream limits to check
- YouTube’s live-stream help says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. It also states that creators must be at least 16 to live stream. Check YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance because requirements and interface details can change.
- Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service when broadcasting.
- YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its webcam and encoder guidance. Do not assume a stream lasting 12 hours or longer will be archived.
