That source can be software on a computer, a hardware encoder, or hosted cloud playout. YouTube does not require a person to sit at the controls, but a scheduled stream or watch page by itself cannot supply the video and audio. If the source stops transmitting, the encoder-supplied feed stops.
What “encoder running” means for a continuous stream
An encoder takes your audio and video and sends them to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s setup instructions connect going live with starting the encoder and ending the broadcast with stopping the feed: YouTube’s live encoder setup guide.
The encoder does not have to be a particular physical device, and it does not have to be operated continuously by a person. The practical requirement is that some active source continues to provide the feed. A computer running encoder software, an encoder appliance, or a hosted playout service can do that. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not identify a separate 24/7 music-stream exception or prescribe a particular device.
Choose where the feed will run

Whichever route you choose, distinguish the media source from the YouTube stream page. The page is where viewers watch and where you manage the broadcast; it is not the source that keeps a 24-hour feed flowing.

Set up and operate the encoder workflow
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
- Create or select the stream in Live Control Room. Copy its current stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current interface.
- Choose supported transmission settings. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, and video codecs including H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. Prefer RTMPS where your encoder supports it, since it encrypts the connection to YouTube. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube recommends that the interval not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for its current requirements and recommendations.
- Test the actual media and connection. Verify that the intended picture and audio arrive correctly, then monitor stream health. A successful initial connection does not rule out later failures.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends keeping stream bandwidth below available upload capacity and leaving 20% room. Account for the primary feed and, if configured, a backup feed; do not size the connection right at the expected bitrate. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Exercise failover before relying on it. If you use a backup encoder, test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network, then check that playback switches to the backup. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover rather than assuming it works.
- Plan recordings separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a single stream longer than 12 hours—including a 24-hour broadcast—will have a complete replay. If an archive matters, plan a separate recording or shorter sessions and verify the result.
What happens if the encoder stops?
If the encoder or hosted source stops sending, it can no longer supply the continuous encoder-based feed. The YouTube watch page or scheduled event does not replace that feed. Power interruptions, lost internet, software crashes, and encoder faults are therefore operational risks for a 24/7 broadcast.
Recovery is a separate capability from starting a stream. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends testing, monitoring, and backup-encoder failover; it does not promise automatic recovery for every encoder or hosted service. Confirm how the specific system handles reconnects and failures, and test the behavior before relying on it.

Keeping an encoder online does not establish that you have permission to broadcast the music. The reviewed YouTube encoder guidance explains connection and stream operation, not a special rights exemption for continuous music broadcasts. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the recordings and any other material you use, and consult YouTube’s applicable rules before streaming.
