To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a Windows PC, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, send its stream key and server URL to an encoder such as OBS, set the video source to repeat, then start the encoder and the event. Test the actual upload connection at your chosen bitrate before relying on it: the PC, power and internet connection must remain available for a do-it-yourself stream.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Check the status and available features in your own YouTube Studio account; availability can vary.
- Install an encoder. YouTube lists OBS among its encoder options. An encoder sends your video and audio feed to YouTube; YouTube’s workflow uses a server URL and a private stream key.
- Prepare a video you have the necessary rights to stream live and, if you plan to retain an archive, to make available afterward.
- Keep the Windows PC powered on and prevent it from sleeping during the broadcast. A home-streaming setup also depends on local power and network continuity.
Create the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Create a stream, or select a scheduled or current stream. Choose the title, description, audience and visibility appropriate for the program. Confirm the selected event is the one you intend to broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. The key is a credential that directs the encoder feed to your YouTube stream. Keep it private; if someone else gets it, reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming.
Configure OBS to repeat the video
- Open OBS and add the prerecorded file as a media source in the scene you want to broadcast. Select the video file and enable the source’s repeat/loop option in the current OBS media-source properties. OBS interface labels can change, so check the properties for the media source you added rather than enabling repeat for an unrelated source.
- Set the scene’s audio deliberately. Check that the file’s audio is enabled and that the OBS mixer shows activity during playback; mute desktop or microphone inputs you do not intend to include.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If the setup offers a server choice, use the YouTube server URL for the event. Do not share or publish the key.
- Set output resolution and bitrate to values your connection can sustain. YouTube’s guidance is to leave about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom for the primary stream plus backup. As a practical calculation, a 6 Mbps configured stream calls for about 7.5 Mbps available upload capacity (6 ÷ 0.8); other devices and network variation can reduce what is actually available to OBS.
- Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. RTMPS encrypts the contribution feed. HLS is another ingest option for cases that need codecs not supported by RTMP, but it has higher latency; it is not necessary for a typical compatible OBS loop setup.
Start, verify and end the broadcast
- In OBS, start streaming. Wait for Live Control Room to receive the feed and show a preview.
- Check the preview for the correct picture, steady playback and expected audio. YouTube recommends testing before a broadcast and monitoring stream quality. If the preview is blank or the audio is wrong, fix it before starting the public event.
- When the preview is ready, start the event in Live Control Room if it does not start automatically. Monitor OBS and YouTube Studio while the stream is live.
- To finish, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed in OBS. If you need a local copy, record a backup rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive.
Connection, duration and archive planning
YouTube’s streaming guidance says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends about 20% headroom for the primary stream plus backup. There is no India-specific minimum speed established here: test the actual connection, at the planned bitrate and during representative network use. A speed test at another time does not guarantee sustained capacity during the broadcast.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the archive matters, keep the session below that limit and make a local recording backup. A continuous loop that runs beyond 12 hours should not be treated as a guaranteed saved video.
Copyright, reused content and monetization
Rights apply to the video and its audio
Use only material for which you have the necessary rights for live and archived use. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; an unresolved match can lead to interruption or termination. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption: a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Review the livestream terms and YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before broadcasting music, documentary footage, film clips or other third-party material.

A loop does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced material remains ineligible for monetization; the policy applies to live streams too. Reused-content review is separate from copyright. Permission to rebroadcast material does not by itself establish that a channel adds enough original commentary, substantive modification or educational or entertainment value. Repeating a video is therefore a monetization risk, not an automatic blanket ban on every loop.
YouTube’s India-localized earning guidance lists ad-revenue eligibility thresholds of 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified long-form watch hours in the preceding 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. These are thresholds alongside other account, policy and program requirements; meeting them does not guarantee acceptance or earnings from a loop stream. Troubleshooting
