Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun FFmpeg under a systemd service with Restart=on-failure and a deliberate restart delay. This lets systemd launch FFmpeg again if the process exits unsuccessfully. For certain output failures, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer also has recovery controls, but that is a separate, in-process layer. Neither method guarantees seamless playback, restores the same input position, or proves that YouTube’s live event is still receiving video and audio.
Choose the right recovery layer
| Layer | What it does | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg FIFO output recovery | Can attempt recovery from certain output failures while FFmpeg remains running, when the selected output configuration supports it. The FFmpeg documentation describes controls including attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time (FFmpeg documentation). |
It does not apply universally to every output path or failure. Behavior depends on the muxer, protocol, and FFmpeg build. |
| systemd process restart | Starts a new FFmpeg process after the service exits under the conditions covered by its restart policy. | It does not fix an invalid stream key, broken command, unavailable input, persistent network problem, or establish that the same YouTube event or media position resumes. |
For a long-running encoder, systemd is the basic process supervisor. The systemd project identifies Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal as recommended for long-running services in its NEWS; check the manual for the systemd version installed on your VPS and your distribution’s conventions.
Prepare the FFmpeg command and protect the stream key
Keep publishing credentials private
Do not put a working YouTube stream key in a broadly readable script, a shared service unit, a screenshot, or a log excerpt. Use a dedicated service account where practical, restrict access to any file holding credentials, and avoid printing secrets in diagnostic output. The exact secure secret-handling method depends on your distribution and deployment.
Use settings that match your stream
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; it lists CBR for the RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings. Supported codecs and recommended bitrate ranges vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the combination you actually use rather than copying a generic bitrate. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options and AAC or MP3 audio on that page; verify compatibility for your ingest path and installed FFmpeg build.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test with representative motion and audio before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and messages during the event; a running FFmpeg process alone does not confirm that viewers are receiving frames and sound.
Run FFmpeg as a systemd service
The following is a minimal unit pattern, not a universal drop-in configuration. Replace the placeholder command with the FFmpeg command that already works for your input and YouTube ingest. Paths, account names, hardening, environment files, and unit conventions vary by distribution. Keep the stream key out of the example and use a suitably protected secret mechanism for your deployment.

WantedBy=multi-user.target
The example’s input, codecs, output URL, and copy settings are illustrative only: use a command appropriate to your media and account. In particular, do not publish to the placeholder address. RestartSec=10 gives the process a pause before systemd retries; adjust the delay to your input, network, and failure pattern. Consider start limits so a permanently broken command does not create an uncontrolled rapid restart loop. Consult your distribution’s systemd documentation and the installed systemd.service manual for exact behavior.
- Save the unit. Place the service file at the systemd unit location used by your distribution, commonly
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. Use an editor with administrative privileges and restrict access to any separate files containing sensitive settings. - Reload unit definitions. Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter creating or changing the unit. - Enable and start it. Run
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.serviceto start the service now and configure it to start at boot. - Check service state. Run
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service. Confirm the service is active, then inspect the recent output rather than treating “active” as proof of a healthy broadcast. - Read the journal. Run
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pagerto review recent messages. To follow new messages, usesudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f. - Test recovery deliberately. In a planned test, stop or interrupt the process in a controlled way and observe whether systemd starts it again after the configured delay. Check the journal for the exit reason and then verify the viewer-facing stream.
When FIFO output recovery may help
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documents recovery-related options such as attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time (FFmpeg documentation). They are relevant only when your output is configured through a supported FIFO path. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version, chosen muxer, and output protocol before relying on them.

Do not assume input-side options named -reconnect solve RTMP or RTMPS publishing failures. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes protocol-specific options; confirm their direction and support for your exact build and use case. FIFO recovery may keep a process alive through a supported output error, while systemd acts after the process exits. They address different failure scopes.
Verify the stream after a restart
- Check
systemctl statusand the service journal. Look for repeated exits, authentication errors, missing input, connection failures, or a restart loop. - Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health, ingest messages, and whether the live event is receiving data.
- Check the live playback as a viewer, including both moving video and audio. A successful process launch is not sufficient verification.
- If the event is not receiving data, diagnose the command, input availability, key, network, and ingest settings. Do not assume that relaunching FFmpeg has restored the event or resumed the previous media position.
Troubleshoot common restart problems
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Service will not start | Unit syntax, executable path, permissions, service account, or input path. | Use systemctl status and the journal to find the specific startup error; correct the unit or access issue, then reload definitions if the unit changed. |
| FFmpeg exits repeatedly and systemd keeps retrying | Persistent command, input, authentication, or network failure; restart timing or start limits. | Read the FFmpeg error in the journal, fix the underlying cause, and choose a sensible delay and start-limit policy rather than retrying rapidly without diagnosis. |
| FFmpeg is active but YouTube shows no healthy stream | Output connection, ingest URL or key, codec/settings compatibility, or stream health. | Review FFmpeg logs, confirm the current YouTube ingest settings for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check Live Control Room and playback. |
| Output failure occurs without the process exiting | Whether the chosen output path supports FIFO recovery and whether the installed build accepts the configured options. | Check the FFmpeg documentation for the exact muxer and protocol. Do not assume systemd will restart a process that remains running. |
| Restarted stream does not continue where viewers left off | Process relaunch is not proof of restored event state or input position. | Verify the current event and playback in YouTube; configure input behavior separately if resuming or looping from a specific point is required. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than administer a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for that workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
