How to Loop a Video on YouTube Live with a Raspberry Pi in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Raspberry Pi can act as a local host for a prerecorded video that an encoder sends to YouTube Live. You need a continuous video source, encoder software that can use it, a YouTube server URL and stream key, and an internet connection with enough stable upload capacity. The exact Pi-and-software combination must be tested: the available official guidance does not establish a verified recipe or guarantee for running any particular setup indefinitely.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi and power supply appropriate to the board, plus storage for your video and the operating system.
  • A video you created or have permission to stream in the relevant territories.
  • Streaming or encoder software that can read a continuously looping local source and send it to YouTube. Confirm that your chosen software supports your Raspberry Pi OS version and the codec and output settings you intend to use.
  • A reliable internet connection with sufficient upload bandwidth for the selected stream bitrate.
  • A verified YouTube channel without live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current getting-started guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Raspberry Pi’s documentation distinguishes video decoding from encoding: Pi 5 has H.265 hardware decoding enabled by default, but that does not establish that it can encode an H.265 livestream at a particular resolution or sustain that workload. Raspberry Pi has published a Pi 5-series H.264 encoding performance note, but neither that note nor the platform guidance establishes a complete, continuously reliable streaming build. Check the capabilities of the exact board, software and output settings you plan to use. See Raspberry Pi configuration documentation and Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance note.

Prepare the video and choose a looping method

First, choose a file that your encoder can read and that you have the necessary rights to broadcast. The encoder needs a source that continues playing when it reaches the end; in practice, that means configuring the software to repeat the file or to consume a continuous playlist. The official platform and Raspberry Pi sources do not specify a particular loop command, software package or restart configuration for this setup, so confirm those details in the current documentation for your chosen encoder rather than relying on an unverified command.

For a documentary, a loop can make a single film repeat, but consider what viewers will experience at the transition: whether playback returns cleanly to the opening, whether the sound jumps, and whether any slate or credits are repeated. Test the full loop, including audio, before scheduling a public stream.

Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or select a live stream. In Live Control Room, create a stream or select the existing encoder stream you intend to use. Follow the current interface prompts; YouTube can change labels and layout.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder. Use the server URL and key shown for that stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; do not include it in a screenshot, public configuration file or message. Reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
  3. Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption. Use the ingest address supplied by Live Control Room and supported by your encoder. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  4. Match the encoder output to YouTube’s ingest guidance. Choose a video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio format that the encoder can reliably produce and YouTube accepts. Apply the settings below as platform recommendations, not as a promise about what your Pi or internet connection can sustain.
  5. Start with a private or unlisted test. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, listen to the audio, watch motion and transitions, and let the stream run long enough to expose problems that a short preview might miss. Confirm that the event is accessible as intended before making it public.

YouTube encoder settings to consider

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. AAC and MP3 are listed audio codecs. Use a combination supported by both your encoder and the chosen hardware; a codec appearing in YouTube’s ingest guidance does not mean your Pi can encode it at your chosen quality.

Output mode YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate YouTube-recommended AV1/H.265 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrates, not an India-specific internet-speed guarantee or a performance claim for any Raspberry Pi model. YouTube advises choosing quality that is reliable on the available upload connection and recommends a speed test. Leave practical headroom rather than selecting a bitrate that uses all of a connection’s measured upload capacity; congestion and fluctuations can still affect a stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Test the Pi setup before relying on it

No particular Raspberry Pi configuration is established here as a tested 24/7 build. Before using one for a long-running public stream, validate the exact board, operating system, encoder, source format, output resolution and network you will use.

  • Run a full loop: check the transition from the end of the file to the beginning, including any black frames, pauses or audio discontinuity.
  • Check stream health: watch YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and health indicators during the test, not just at startup.
  • Check sustained behavior: leave the intended workload running for a meaningful test period and watch for playback stalls, encoder errors, overheating or unstable network behavior. Results on one board or network do not establish performance on another.
  • Test interruptions: establish what happens after a power cut, internet outage, software crash or YouTube disconnect. The reviewed sources do not establish automatic recovery for a particular Pi setup; plan how you will notice and restart it.
  • Check physical fit: confirm the exact board revision and accessory requirements. Raspberry Pi’s display guidance says flagship models since Pi 4B use micro-HDMI ports, but a display is not necessarily required for a headless setup. See Raspberry Pi display documentation.

Copyright, live interruptions and monetization

Being able to play a file through an encoder does not establish that you may broadcast it. YouTube’s live-stream terms say the provider represents that they have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content on Google services, including music licensing rights, and agrees to comply with applicable rules in the stream territory. The sources cited here do not determine whether a particular documentary, soundtrack or license may be streamed in India. Public availability, attribution or technical access alone does not establish permission. See YouTube’s Terms of Service.

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder and warning; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Even licensed third-party content can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Check permission and any allowlisting requirement with the rights owner before going live. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025, calls repetitive or mass-produced material “inauthentic content” and says repurposed material without significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value may make a channel ineligible for monetization. The policy applies to live streams; permission from a rights holder does not by itself determine whether a channel meets monetization rules. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Possible cause What to check
YouTube does not receive a signal Incorrect server URL or stream key, an encoder connection problem, or an unsupported ingest configuration. Compare the encoder’s destination with the current values in Live Control Room, check its connection log and confirm that the selected codec and settings follow YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Video buffers or stream health is poor The selected bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may fluctuate. Run a speed test, lower the output bitrate or resolution, and repeat the test while watching Live Control Room health.
Playback stops at the end of the file The source or playlist is not configured to repeat, or the encoder does not handle the selected loop method. Check the current documentation for your encoder’s repeat or playlist behavior and test the end-to-start transition before going public.
Video arrives but audio is absent or wrong Audio may be disabled, mapped incorrectly, or encoded in a format the ingest path does not accept. Check the encoder’s audio source and output settings, use a listed codec such as AAC or MP3, and listen to a private or unlisted test.
A live stream is interrupted after starting YouTube may have detected third-party content, or the encoder, Pi or network may have disconnected. Check YouTube’s notice and the encoder’s logs; verify rights and allowlisting with the rights owner, then inspect power, network and software behavior before restarting.

The exact cause depends on the encoder and board configuration; the table gives checks, not a diagnosis of a particular device.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded video live without leaving a Pi or another computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
