Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play multiple local files as a YouTube live stream: install VLC, add the videos to the source playlist, connect OBS to a YouTube stream key, test the preview and audio, then start the broadcast. You must add files to the playlist; the documented workflow does not establish that OBS imports an entire folder automatically or ends the YouTube stream when playback finishes.
Before you start
- Check live-streaming access. YouTube requires a verified channel without a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Confirm your rights. Make sure you have permission to livestream both the video and its audio. Having a copy of a file does not, by itself, establish streaming rights. YouTube’s guidance says streams must comply with its rules: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Prepare a stable computer and connection. OBS will play and send the stream from your computer, so it and the internet connection need to remain available for the broadcast. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above your total streaming bitrate; that is a recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service: YouTube streaming tips.
Set up a playlist from local videos in OBS
- Install VLC and OBS. The VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS’s guide specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; the source is documented for Windows, macOS and Linux. The exact labels can differ by software version. See OBS’s VLC Video Source guide.
- Add the VLC Video source to a scene. In OBS, select or create the scene for the broadcast, use the Sources panel’s add control, and choose VLC Video Source. If the option is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its 32-bit or 64-bit version matches OBS.
- Add the files individually. Open the source’s playlist controls and add the video files you want to play. Arrange them in the intended order. Do not assume that selecting a folder imports every file: the documented OBS guide describes a playlist, not universal folder auto-import.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if the playlist should restart after its last file. Enable Shuffle Playlist if you want randomized playback instead of the set order. Check the source preview to confirm the first item appears and the framing is suitable.
- Check the audio path. Play a representative file and watch OBS’s audio meters. Confirm the source is audible and that the intended audio is not doubled by another active source. A webcam, capture card or external microphone is not inherently needed when the prerecorded video already contains the audio you intend to stream.
Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose Go Live and create a stream or schedule one. Set visibility to public, private or unlisted as appropriate for your audience.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream’s settings, copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not show it on screen, include it in screenshots or share it publicly. YouTube’s encoder instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Configure OBS for YouTube. Open OBS’s streaming settings. Select a YouTube service preset if available, or enter the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Use RTMPS when supported; YouTube recommends the encrypted connection, which protects the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that picture and audio are both arriving as expected. For a scheduled stream, use YouTube’s Go live control when the preview is ready.
Test bitrate and stream health before going live
Run a test before an important broadcast using the same playlist, settings and internet connection you plan to use. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the combined bitrate of the stream. For example, if your configured total bitrate is 10 Mbps, aim for at least 12 Mbps of available upload bandwidth. This margin reduces the chance that normal connection variation consumes all available capacity; it does not promise a flawless stream.
- Let the test run long enough to catch buffering, playback gaps or audio problems.
- Check both OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream health and confirm the audio level is appropriate.
- If the YouTube preview does not appear, check that OBS is using the current server URL and stream key for the selected stream.
- For technical encoding recommendations, consult YouTube’s streaming tips; requirements and settings can depend on the chosen output and current YouTube guidance.
End the broadcast deliberately
When you have finished, stop the encoder in OBS and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate. Do not rely on the last playlist item to stop YouTube Live: OBS’s documented VLC playlist controls cover loop and shuffle behavior, but do not document automatic termination of the YouTube broadcast when playback ends. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; consult its encoder setup instructions for the applicable stream workflow.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video Source is missing: install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS. The OBS guide calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- A file does not play: confirm it was added to the VLC source playlist, then test that file in VLC. Remove and re-add it if the playlist entry is invalid.
- The videos play once and stop: enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to restart. Playlist looping does not itself end the YouTube broadcast.
- The stream has no sound: play the source, check OBS’s audio meters and verify that the source’s audio is reaching the stream mix.
- YouTube shows no incoming preview: check the stream key and server URL against the selected stream in Live Control Room, and confirm the encoder is running.
- Playback stutters or the stream health degrades: check available upload bandwidth against the total bitrate and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Re-test after adjusting settings or improving the connection.
- The stream will not activate: check channel verification and live-streaming eligibility. Initial activation may take up to 24 hours, while a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days prevents eligibility under YouTube’s stated requirement.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream to keep running without leaving your computer and home connection on, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
