Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To keep an FFmpeg YouTube live stream running after you close the terminal, run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd and include -nostdin so it does not wait for terminal input. First prove the full FFmpeg command works interactively; then run it as a dedicated, unprivileged service with a protected stream key, deliberate restart settings, and checks for both service status and YouTube stream health. A service manager can restart a failed process, but it cannot fix a bad key, a missing input, or a persistent network problem.
Before creating the service
A background service is appropriate when a Linux machine should run an FFmpeg process without an open terminal. Decide what FFmpeg will send before configuring systemd: a prerecorded file, a looped file, a camera, or a network feed. These inputs have different pacing and recovery needs, so there is no single command that suits them all.
- Confirm FFmpeg is installed and built with the input format, encoder, and output protocol your workflow needs.
- Find its absolute path with
command -v ffmpeg; use that path in the service configuration. - Choose an existing Linux host or, if you need a remote always-on machine, consider a VPS. A VPS is optional, not a requirement for FFmpeg or YouTube Live.
- Have access to YouTube Live Control Room so you can retrieve the current ingest URL and stream key, run a test, and check ingest health.
Use a dedicated Linux account for the service instead of running FFmpeg as root. Give that account access only to its working directory, input files, and protected configuration.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. It lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, with supported settings and bitrate recommendations varying by codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health and messages.

| Output mode | Published H.264 video bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps minimum; 10 Mbps recommended |
These figures are YouTube’s published guidance, not one bitrate that applies to every stream. Match the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate to the relevant row in YouTube’s current table, then check that your upload bandwidth can sustain the output with room for variation. YouTube’s advanced recommendations list stereo AAC audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
Use a keyframe interval near two seconds. For a fixed frame rate, the GOP length in frames is approximately twice the frame rate: for example, 60 frames at 30 fps. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S); it says AV1 is not supported for HDR and suggests considering HLS if the encoder cannot provide the necessary HDR capability over RTMP.

Test the complete FFmpeg command interactively
Do not make systemd the first test environment. Run the exact command you intend to put in the service, substituting your actual input and ingest configuration without exposing the key in shared terminals, screenshots, or copied logs. Confirm that the input opens, audio and motion are present, the outgoing resolution and bitrate are appropriate, and YouTube Live Control Room receives a healthy signal. An unlisted or otherwise controlled test is useful before a public broadcast.
For a prerecorded file sent in real time, FFmpeg documents -re as a way to read the input at its native rate. For a live camera or network input, do not add -re automatically; use the input’s appropriate options and reconnection behavior. If the source file should repeat, configure and test end-of-file looping explicitly.

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP over an encrypted connection and documents RTMP URL components and file publishing with -re and -f flv. Use the current RTMPS ingest endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP.

- Create a dedicated account and working directory. Ensure the service account can read the input and write any required files, without broader permissions than needed.
- Store the ingest credential outside the unit file. Use a protected environment file or another secret mechanism. Restrict access to the service account and administrators. Do not put a real stream key in a publicly readable unit, documentation, or logs.
- Write the unit using the absolute FFmpeg path. Include
-nostdinamong FFmpeg’s global options. FFmpeg normally checks console input, and its FAQ says this can suspend a background process;-nostdindisables those checks. Redirecting standard input from/dev/nullis the documented alternative. - Configure recovery deliberately. A restart policy can recover from a process exit, but repeated restarts will not repair a deterministic error. Set a reasonable delay and rate limit for the installed systemd version rather than allowing a rapid, unbounded loop.
- Enable and start only after the preflight passes. Then inspect service status and logs, and separately verify the ingest and preview in YouTube Live Control Room.

This example uses 4500 kb/s video, which is not a universal recommendation and may not match YouTube’s guidance for your chosen mode. Its GOP of 60 frames corresponds to two seconds only at 30 fps. Set GOP length to roughly twice the frame rate for a two-second interval, and make bitrate, resolution, and frame rate a compatible set.
Do not assume shell-style variable expansion works in ExecStart. Use systemd’s documented environment expansion rules for your installed version or a carefully protected wrapper script. Keep the actual key out of the unit text. Confirm that FFmpeg supports the selected encoder and RTMPS protocol. The example’s -re suits a prerecorded file sent in real time; remove it for a live source unless that source workflow calls for pacing.

Start the service and verify the stream
After saving a unit under /etc/systemd/system/ with a suitable service filename, such as youtube-stream.service, reload systemd’s unit definitions and start it. These commands assume that filename and a systemd-based Linux distribution:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f
Check the journal for FFmpeg startup errors and ongoing output. A service marked active confirms the process is running; it does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream or that the public playback works. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s signal and stream-health messages, and inspect the preview for the expected picture and audio.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| Service exits immediately | Inspect the journal for a wrong executable path, bad permissions, missing input, malformed arguments, unsupported encoder, or unreadable secret file. Re-run the command interactively with the same paths and options. |
| Process suspends or acts interactively | Include -nostdin among global FFmpeg options, or redirect stdin from /dev/null. Check that the service is not attached to an unintended terminal. |
| YouTube receives no signal | Verify the current ingest URL and key in Live Control Room, network reachability, the output muxer, and whether this FFmpeg build supports the selected RTMPS protocol. |
| Connection works but quality or health is poor | Compare actual codec, frame rate, keyframe cadence, and bitrate with YouTube’s current settings table. Check upload capacity and YouTube’s health messages; test using similar motion and audio to the intended stream. |
| Service repeatedly restarts | Determine whether the failure is transient or caused by a persistent configuration problem such as a bad key, unavailable input, or rejected settings. Correct the cause and configure an appropriate delay and rate limit for the installed service manager. |
| Stream key may be exposed | Rotate the key in YouTube Live Control Room, then update the protected service configuration and restart the service. |
Where to run the process
You can use an existing Linux machine if it has dependable power, upload bandwidth, access controls, and a source available for the intended duration. A remote Linux VPS is another option when you want the process hosted away from home, but it adds provider cost and server administration; it is not required. In either case, systemd supervision addresses process lifecycle, not every dependency in the streaming chain.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded YouTube stream without leaving a Linux computer, VPS, or home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera feed.
