You can run a continuous YouTube live stream from OBS on Ubuntu by enabling YouTube Live, creating a broadcast in YouTube Studio, and sending OBS’s encoded video to YouTube with a private stream key. For a dependable setup, use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, size the bitrate to measured upload speed, and plan around YouTube’s warning that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives. OBS and YouTube Live are the do-it-yourself route; if you need the stream to keep going without an Ubuntu computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative.
Before you start: YouTube Live eligibility and Ubuntu support
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your first broadcast. YouTube’s current general guidance also requires streamers to be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming account requirements.
- Install OBS using the current OBS Project Ubuntu instructions. Its download page currently lists the official PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer. An older OBS Linux installation article describes broader version scope, so use the current download page to choose a supported route. The instructions do not establish that every Ubuntu release or device is supported by the same installation method. See OBS Project’s download page.
- Have a stable wired connection if available, and measure upload speed at the location where the stream will run. India-specific service or performance exceptions are not established by the general OBS and YouTube guidance; your ISP, network conditions, and hardware determine what profile you can sustain.
Install OBS on Ubuntu
For Ubuntu 24.04 and newer, OBS Project’s current download page provides the following PPA commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt update
sudo apt install obs-studioEnter your Ubuntu password when prompted. After installation, open OBS Studio from the applications menu. If you use a different Ubuntu release, check OBS Project’s current Linux instructions rather than assuming these PPA commands apply unchanged: OBS Linux installation guidance.
Enable YouTube Live and create a broadcast
- Enable live streaming. Complete channel verification and live activation in YouTube Studio. Allow up to 24 hours for a first-time activation. If the feature is unavailable, check the channel’s eligibility and restrictions before changing OBS settings.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a new stream or schedule one. Set the title, audience and other broadcast details there.
- Copy the stream URL and key. YouTube provides the ingest URL and a stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your broadcast. Do not share it in screenshots, public documents or chat. If you need to reuse a key across broadcasts, YouTube supports creating a custom stream key. See YouTube’s stream URL and key guidance.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings and select Stream.
- Choose YouTube as the service, then enter or select the server and paste the stream key from Live Control Room. If you configure a custom service instead, use YouTube’s supplied stream URL and key exactly.
- Keep the key private and avoid including it in recordings or screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on the channel again.
- Add your video and audio sources to the OBS scene. For a documentary-style feed, confirm that the intended video source fills the canvas and that audio is routed to the correct mixer input before going live.
YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password and address, so the OBS connection is not just a convenience setting; it is access to your broadcast. Consult YouTube’s stream-key instructions if the current Studio layout differs from these labels.

Set a stable encoder profile and bitrate
For a straightforward SDR stream, YouTube’s documented baseline is RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the feed in transit. Let YouTube detect resolution and frame rate unless you have a specific reason to use a custom stream key with manual resolution. YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are video-only targets, not the total upload requirement. Leave bandwidth for audio, protocol overhead, other household or office traffic, and any backup stream. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom and advises measuring upload rather than treating download speed as a proxy. See the encoder recommendations and YouTube’s network guidance.

Choose the resolution and frame rate based on the source material and the upload connection you can sustain consistently, not merely the fastest result from a speed test. A higher bitrate cannot compensate for unstable connectivity, and available guidance does not establish performance for any particular Ubuntu computer, Indian ISP or location.
Test the stream before leaving it running
- Use a representative scene, including typical movement and the loudest expected audio, rather than testing only a static frame.
- Start OBS and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected resolution, frame rate, video and audio.
- Open the watch page from another device, including a phone if that reflects your audience, and verify playback and sound.
- Monitor the stream during an extended test for dropped frames, encoder overload, audio gaps or network interruptions. YouTube’s event checklist suggests configuring the encoder well in advance and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event; those are event-production recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service.

Plan continuous programming around YouTube’s 12-hour archive warning
YouTube warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” In practical terms, an uninterrupted encoder session longer than 12 hours creates an archive risk. If the automatic archive matters, schedule managed sessions shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Shorter managed sessions add operational work: someone or something must initiate the next session, and viewers may see a handoff or interruption. The official guidance does not promise seamless transitions between sessions. Very long streams may also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. Decide whether archive capture or uninterrupted viewing matters more for your programming, then test your restart plan before relying on it.

Keep a documentary stream safe to publish
Live-stream eligibility and technical settings do not grant rights to the footage, soundtrack or other material you broadcast. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and check the terms that apply to licensed material. Documentary footage, music and archival clips can each carry separate rights. A local recording is useful for recovery, but it does not make unauthorized content permissible.
Troubleshoot common OBS-to-YouTube problems
- You cannot start a live stream: confirm channel verification, check whether live streaming is restricted, and allow up to 24 hours after first activation.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: recheck the selected service, stream URL and key. Ensure the key is the one for the intended broadcast and has not been reset or exposed.
- Stream health reports connection problems or frames drop: measure upload speed at the streaming location, reduce the bitrate or output profile, and limit competing network traffic. Preserve YouTube’s recommended upload headroom instead of targeting the full measured rate.
- Video looks unstable or motion breaks up: verify H.264 and CBR, keep the keyframe interval at two seconds (no more than four), and test a lower resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the current profile.
- Viewers hear no audio or the wrong source: inspect the OBS audio mixer and source routing, then verify audio in the Live Control Room preview and on the watch page before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream ends unexpectedly: YouTube warns that connection disruptions can break a stream. Check local power, router and ISP stability, and whether OBS or the computer stopped. A UPS may help keep a local computer and router powered during a local power outage, but it cannot protect against an ISP failure.
- The archive is missing: check the session duration. YouTube says streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so retain a local recording and use shorter sessions if the archive is important.
