Test the command over SSH, disable FFmpeg’s console input checks with -nostdin, then let a systemd service start and restart the process. A service restart can recover from some process failures, but it cannot by itself prove that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio.
What you need before starting
- A Linux VPS you can access over SSH, with FFmpeg installed from a trusted build or the distribution’s supported package source.
- A media source that the VPS can read, plus a working FFmpeg command for that source.
- A YouTube Live configuration and its current RTMPS ingestion endpoint and stream key.
- A non-root account for the streaming service, and systemd on the host.
There is no universal VPS size to recommend from these requirements alone. Resource use depends on whether FFmpeg copies or re-encodes the media, the resolution and bitrate, the source type, the number of simultaneous streams, and the host’s network conditions. Check the installed FFmpeg build and its available encoders locally: online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated and may describe a newer version than the one on your VPS. FFmpeg Documentation
Use RTMPS and protect the stream key
Use the current ingestion details shown by YouTube for the stream you intend to run. RTMPS is RTMP carried over a secure SSL connection. YouTube’s ingestion guidance specifies the correct endpoint, port 443, and hostname for SNI authentication; a wrong hostname, port, or an attempt to use cleartext RTMP can prevent connection. YouTube: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS · FFmpeg Protocols Documentation
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, public repositories, shell history, shared logs, or a unit file readable by other users. Use a suitably restricted configuration or environment file, or another secret-handling method available on the host. Check who can read both the secret and the service definition.

Test the stream interactively over SSH
Confirm FFmpeg and the input
-
Connect to the VPS over SSH and check the installed version with
ffmpeg -version. If you need to confirm a particular encoder or option, use the installed build’s help output, such asffmpeg -h encoder=libx264where applicable. -
Confirm that the service account can read the media source. For a file, verify the path and permissions; for a network input, verify that the VPS can reach it.
-
Run the intended command in your SSH session before creating a service. For prerecorded file input, FFmpeg documents the real-time input pattern
-re -i myfile, followed by an output such as FLV to an RTMP URL. Adapt that pattern to the current YouTube RTMPS endpoint and your media’s codec requirements; it is illustrative, not a complete command for every file or configuration. FFmpeg Protocols DocumentationRank #2

Use a private or unlisted YouTube configuration when appropriate for testing. Check the YouTube Live control room as well as FFmpeg’s output: a command that starts is not sufficient evidence that the intended broadcast is being ingested correctly.
Make background execution safe
For a process that will run without an interactive terminal, include -nostdin. FFmpeg’s FAQ explains: “To prevent these input checks, allowing ffmpeg to run as a background task, use the -nostdin option in the ffmpeg invocation.” Redirecting standard input from /dev/null is an alternative, but -nostdin makes the intent explicit. FFmpeg FAQ: background tasks
Run FFmpeg as a systemd service
Once the SSH test works, use systemd rather than relying on a shell session or a manually backgrounded process. A service can start at boot, remain independent of your SSH login, and restart after qualifying failures. The following is a template, not a tested unit: replace the bracketed command material, adapt paths and accounts to the host, and validate the service on the target system.

Use the absolute path to FFmpeg and explicitly specify the input, encoding or copy options, and output format. Keep the key out of a broadly readable unit file; have the service load it from a protected secret/configuration mechanism instead. Ensure the command is escaped correctly for systemd and that the selected service account can read its input and secret.

Save the unit under an appropriate name, for example
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service, and ensure its permissions and any separate secret-file permissions are restrictive.Recommended Free Tools

Inspect process state with
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.serviceand recent output withsudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager. Follow new log entries withsudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f. -
Verify the live status in YouTube’s control room and confirm the actual output is healthy. A systemd service marked active only reports on the process, not whether viewers receive a valid, continuing stream.
Restart=on-failure is a documented choice for long-running services. systemd also rate-limits repeated starts, so a persistent fault can eventually prevent further rapid retries. Check the target host’s systemd version and distribution policies. systemd.service(5)

Plan looping and restart behavior
If the source is prerecorded material, configure looping deliberately in the FFmpeg input or command design and confirm that the YouTube stream or event is intended to remain active for that duration. A process restart may begin the input again rather than resume at the previous position. Looping addresses what FFmpeg plays; it does not prevent network disconnects, fix credentials, or establish that YouTube is receiving the stream.
For a stream-copy workflow, FFmpeg forwards compatible input streams without re-encoding; this can reduce encoding work but leaves less opportunity to change the stream’s format. Transcoding gives you control over output codecs and settings but adds CPU or other encoder-resource demand. Which is appropriate depends on the input codecs and the output YouTube accepts; there is no defensible one-size VPS specification or performance figure here.
Troubleshoot by separating process and broadcast health
| Symptom | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg suspends or stops responding after background launch | Whether it is checking for console input in a process without a usable terminal. | Add -nostdin to the invocation, or redirect standard input from /dev/null. FFmpeg FAQ: background tasks |
| Connection fails immediately | The exact current RTMPS endpoint, hostname, port 443, TLS/SNI path, and stream key. | Copy the ingestion details from YouTube’s current stream configuration; check for an incorrect hostname, wrong port, or cleartext RTMP attempt. YouTube RTMPS ingestion guidance |
| The service repeatedly restarts | The unit journal and FFmpeg error output, input readability, credentials, endpoint, network path, codec/container compatibility, and resource pressure. | Fix the underlying failure before relying on another restart. Repeated starts can hit systemd’s rate limit. systemd.service(5) |
| systemd says the service is active, but the stream is unhealthy or absent | YouTube’s live status and whether FFmpeg is producing and sending the expected media. | Diagnose the input, encoder output, and ingestion status separately; process supervision does not validate successful or continuous media delivery. |
| The stream drops under load | Whether FFmpeg is transcoding, the resolution and bitrate, concurrent stream count, source type, and network capacity. | Measure the workload on the intended VPS and adjust the workload or resources based on observed constraints; no universal minimum is established. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a VPS and systemd service is more work than you want, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. The steps are upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or the plans, then start your free day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I manage the service after I disconnect from SSH?
Yes. Use systemctl to check, start, stop, or restart the unit; an interactive SSH session is not needed for the service to continue running.
Does systemd restart guarantee the YouTube stream will recover?
No. It can restart a process after qualifying failures, but it cannot fix a continuing source, credential, network, or encoding fault, or confirm healthy media delivery.
