To reduce OBS CPU usage, first identify whether the strain comes from software encoding, rendering, or a complex scene. If OBS is encoding with x264 and encoding overload is the problem, test a compatible hardware encoder. If the workload is elsewhere, simplify the scene or lower the stream’s output resolution or frame rate. Make one change at a time, test with representative footage, and check YouTube’s stream health before relying on a continuous broadcast.
Find out what is using the CPU
Do not start by changing random encoder settings or buying hardware. Reproduce the problem using the scenes and content you expect to run, then open OBS Stats and review the log. Look for encoding overload and rendering lag, and compare OBS’s CPU use with overall system use. There is no universal CPU-percentage threshold that identifies a problem: the useful evidence is which part of OBS is struggling on your particular machine.
Test more than a static preview. A documentary channel may use a still title card for some periods and moving footage, animated overlays, browser sources, capture devices, or transitions at others. Those scenes can impose different loads. Use the same kind of motion and audio you plan to broadcast, and observe whether the relevant OBS indicators change as you switch or simplify elements.
- Encoding overload: investigate the encoder and the video settings first.
- Rendering lag: test scene complexity and the work required to render the output; a different encoder may not address it.
- Neither is clearly responsible: inspect the log and test a simpler scene before making a purchase or lowering quality.
OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide covers performance troubleshooting. An OBS log can help identify what happened, but its indicators need to be interpreted in the context of your OBS version, hardware, and configuration.

If encoding is the bottleneck, test a hardware encoder
OBS’s included x264 encoder uses software encoding; hardware encoders use specialized hardware, generally moving encoding work away from the CPU. OBS names NVENC, QuickSync, and AMD VCE as options when available. Which encoder appears and works depends on your hardware generation, drivers, operating system, and OBS build.
- In OBS, open Settings → Output and check the encoder available for your streaming output. If Output Mode is set to Simple, switch to Advanced only if you need the additional encoder controls; labels can vary by OBS version.
- If the current stream uses x264 and the evidence points to encoding overload, select a compatible hardware encoder and preserve YouTube-compatible output settings.
- Run a representative test. Compare encoding overload, image quality at your chosen bitrate, and stream stability rather than assuming a hardware encoder will fix every performance issue.
Hardware encoding is not automatically better for image quality in every case. OBS’s hardware-encoding guide, dated January 11, 2022, cautions that earlier-generation hardware encoders may deliver lower quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at the same bitrate. Its specific compatibility examples, including NVIDIA’s Maxwell-era generation, are dated guidance rather than a complete current buying list. Check compatibility for your actual hardware and current OBS build in the OBS Hardware Encoding guide.
A GPU upgrade is worth considering only if your existing system lacks a suitable hardware encoder and testing confirms software encoding is the bottleneck. A new encoder may not fix rendering lag or pressure from scenes, sources, and filters.

Reduce the work OBS has to do
Lower output resolution or frame rate in measured steps
Reducing the output resolution or frame rate can reduce performance pressure. If 60 fps is not working, OBS specifically recommends trying 30 fps. Make one change at a time and test the result; lowering both at once makes it harder to tell which adjustment helped.
- In OBS, open Settings → Video.
- Check the Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Values against the stream you actually need. If the stream is unstable at 60 fps, test 30 fps. If it still struggles, test a lower output resolution that is acceptable for your programme.
- Run the same representative content again and check OBS Stats, the log, picture quality, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
OBS says 60 fps can be much more demanding than 30 fps and recommends testing system capacity before going live. Choosing a lower frame rate or resolution is a delivery-quality trade-off, not a universal requirement.
Keep the base canvas unless there is a strong reason to change it
Output (Scaled) Resolution controls the delivered stream size. The Base (Canvas) Resolution is the space in which you arrange the scene. OBS generally advises against lowering the canvas as a first step because doing so can complicate capture and asset management. Consider it only when resources are severely constrained and output changes have not been enough.

If you do change the canvas, OBS advises making a new scene collection and repositioning or resizing sources there. This avoids casually disrupting layouts built around the original canvas.
Test a simpler scene
Duplicate or otherwise preserve your working scene, then hide or remove one source, filter, or animation at a time. Compare the relevant OBS stats after each change. This controlled test can reveal which elements matter in your setup without assuming that any one kind of source always uses a particular amount of CPU.

Keep YouTube Live settings compatible
CPU tuning does not replace valid ingest settings. YouTube’s live-encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, specifies CBR bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and choose the row for your codec, resolution, and frame rate.

For H.264, YouTube lists these examples in its live-stream bitrate recommendations:
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not CPU targets. Lowering bitrate alone is not a dependable fix for CPU-bound x264 encoding. YouTube’s table gives different values for AV1 and H.265—for example, 720p30 is listed at 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended, while 1080p30 is 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended—so do not apply an H.264 figure to another codec.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. In the Live Control Room, stream-key and auto-start/auto-stop settings are available, and resolution and frame rate can be automatically detected by default. Use the stream key assigned to the intended broadcast and verify the current Live Control Room settings before starting. Automatic controls do not replace a test or monitoring.

Test network capacity and plan for continuous operation
Network headroom is separate from CPU use. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate; other people sharing the connection can reduce what is available. Verify actual upload capacity at the location and account for any backup stream if you use one. This margin is a network recommendation, not an OBS CPU setting.
Before committing to a 24/7 run, test for a representative long period with the real scenes, motion, audio, and network conditions. Monitor OBS and YouTube stream health while it runs, and decide in advance how you will respond if the local computer, network, or YouTube connection fails. YouTube advises testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
Choose the remedy that matches the failure
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Switch from x264 to a compatible hardware encoder | Testing shows software encoding is CPU-bound. | Availability depends on hardware and software; image quality at the selected bitrate can differ. It may not solve rendering or scene pressure. |
| Lower output frame rate or resolution | A lower delivery specification is acceptable and the system struggles to produce the current one. | Changes the stream viewers receive; test quality and stability together. |
| Simplify the scene | You suspect a source, filter, or animation is contributing to load. | Requires controlled testing; the effect depends on the actual scene and system. |
| Lower the base canvas | Resources are severely constrained after less disruptive options. | Can complicate scene layout and asset management; OBS recommends caution. |
| Move prerecorded playback off the local OBS PC | The requirement is continuous playback of uploaded videos rather than interactive, locally composed production. | This changes the workflow; it is not an OBS tuning fix and is not suited to every production. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your 24/7 YouTube channel plays prerecorded video, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping OBS and a local computer running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not stream from a camera and it streams to YouTube only.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTroubleshoot common symptoms
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports encoding overload while using x264. | Software encoding workload. | Test a compatible hardware encoder; if that is unavailable or does not resolve the issue, test lower output FPS or resolution. |
| Rendering lag persists after changing encoder. | Scene rendering or system workload, not necessarily encoding. | Simplify the scene one element at a time and compare OBS stats; review the log in context. |
| The stream is unstable despite acceptable OBS stats. | Network capacity or YouTube ingest health. | Check stream-health messages, verify upload capacity and YouTube-compatible settings, and preserve the recommended network headroom. |
| A reduced canvas disrupts framing or source placement. | Scene layout tied to the original base canvas. | Restore the original canvas if appropriate, or use a new scene collection and reposition or resize the sources. |
| A hardware encoder is unavailable. | Hardware, driver, operating-system, or OBS compatibility. | Check the current OBS hardware-encoding guidance and installed drivers; do not assume every GPU supports every encoder in every configuration. |
Check copyright and channel eligibility too
Lower CPU use does not make a programme eligible to stream or monetise. Before scheduling a 24/7 documentary stream, confirm that you have the rights needed for the film, soundtrack, images, and any other material, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and channel monetisation rules. Reusing footage without the necessary rights can create copyright problems; repetitive or minimally transformed programming can also raise separate monetisation concerns. Use the copyright safety checklist as a preflight aid, not as a substitute for YouTube’s policies or legal advice.
