Before choosing any service, check whether it can loop your prerecorded playlist, recover after interruptions, keep audio continuous while visuals change, provide useful monitoring, support your required resolution and bitrate, and fit your budget. These are questions to verify with each provider, not features to assume.
Set up the YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day you plan to launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Choose the live-stream workflow that uses an encoder, then locate the server URL and stream key in the stream settings.
- Add the stream details to your chosen encoder or cloud service. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key where requested. Treat the key like a password: do not post it publicly or include it in a screen recording. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the service using it.
- Configure the stream and run a test. For encoder settings, YouTube recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec; use YouTube’s current recommendations for the settings you select at YouTube encoder settings.
- Preview before going live. Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm the stream appears on the channel or watch page. Listen for gaps, clipping, wrong levels, or silent sections; check that the visuals are suitable and that playback continues across playlist transitions. Test on a phone as well as your production screen.
- Monitor after launch. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and audio and video continuously. A “24/7” setup still needs a plan for alerts, interruptions, and checking that the public stream is actually playing.
Keep a local stream reliable
If you use a desktop encoder instead of a cloud service, the stream depends on the computer and its connection staying available. YouTube recommends a reliable internet connection and upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the combined primary and backup bitrate. That is capacity above the stream’s bitrate requirements, not a substitute for testing the actual connection.

- Use a stable wired connection where practical, and avoid competing uploads during the test.
- Test with the same resolution, frame rate, audio, and playlist behavior you intend to use live.
- Check that the computer will not sleep, restart for updates, or close the encoder when unattended.
- Decide how you will notice a disconnect and restore the stream. Do not assume an encoder or YouTube will restart it automatically.

Plan for replays and long broadcasts
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on a single continuous stream of 12 hours or longer appearing as one complete automatic replay. If you need a full recording, arrange a separate recording and archive plan, and test it before relying on it.

Check music rights and monetization separately
An encoder or cloud service only sends the stream; it does not grant permission to broadcast music. Before streaming, verify that your licenses cover both the specific recordings (master rights) and compositions, as well as the intended territories and uses. A service’s ability to play a track is not proof that you have those rights.
YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams. It says monetized material should be original and authentic and reviews channels for repetitive, mass-produced, generic, and reused content. A playlist of music you do not control can raise both rights and reused-content concerns; the outcome depends on the catalog, license documents, and channel. A license or streaming service alone does not guarantee monetization. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

If your channel is eligible for ads, YouTube documents automatic, scheduled, and manual live mid-roll approaches, but ad slots are not guaranteed. YouTube reported in January 2024 that channels using automatic live mid-rolls saw an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries. Troubleshoot common failures
