Yes—but a low-end PC should be treated as a setup to test, not as a guaranteed 24/7 encoder. Start with a simple OBS scene and H.264 at 720p30, then check sustained CPU or GPU load, stable upload capacity, dropped frames and YouTube stream health in a representative rehearsal. If the computer cannot hold that configuration, test 480p30. YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommendations for sending a stream to its platform, not proof that a particular PC or Indian internet connection can manage it.
Start with a modest stream setting
A practical first trial for an older computer is H.264 at 720p30 using constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these H.264 targets:

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not independent performance measurements or guarantees. Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain reliably, rather than assuming the highest recommended rate is best. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. When to try 480p30
If 720p30 produces encoder overload, persistent dropped frames, or unstable output in a representative test, simplify the scene and test 480p30. Lower resolution may reduce the workload, but it does not guarantee success: encoding demand also depends on the encoder, frame rate, source content and scene complexity.

Prepare the PC and OBS scene
- Confirm the channel can go live. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable access ahead of the planned start. Details are in YouTube’s encoder live-stream help.
- Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. Treat its result as a starting point, not a certification that the PC can stream continuously. OBS says compatible system requirements do not guarantee that a computer can stream or record; demand varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Consult the OBS system requirements.
- Keep the scene lightweight. Use only necessary sources, overlays and filters. Test the actual video or capture source, audio, scene and intended resolution; an idle desktop test does not represent the stream workload.
- Set the encoder output. Use H.264, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and a modest starting target such as 720p30. If the PC cannot sustain it, change one factor at a time—scene complexity, resolution or frame rate—and repeat the test.
Check upload reliability, not just speed
A download-speed result does not establish that a connection can send a live stream steadily. Test upload from the PC’s actual location and at the time you plan to stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% spare bandwidth beyond the stream requirement and notes that other people or devices can share the connection. Its streaming tips also warn that connectivity disruptions can break a stream.
- Pause large uploads and downloads during the test, and account for phones, TVs and other devices using the same connection.
- If Wi-Fi varies or drops, try connecting the PC to the router with Ethernet and repeat the rehearsal. A wired link may improve the PC-to-router connection, but it cannot prevent an ISP outage or power cut.
- Watch for dropped frames and stream-health warnings while the stream is running. A brief speed test alone cannot show whether upload will remain stable for hours.
Rehearse before calling it always-on
- In OBS, configure the intended YouTube stream and make a private or unlisted rehearsal.
- Use representative content and audio, not a static test screen if the real program has motion or changing sources.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health; keep monitoring during the test. YouTube recommends testing and ongoing monitoring.
- Run a long-duration trial. Separately check what happens after an OBS/encoder restart, PC restart, internet interruption and power interruption. The cited guidance does not establish a universal unattended-restart procedure, so document what your own setup actually recovers from.
Plan for interruptions and recordings
A PC-based stream depends on the PC, its power, the local network and the internet connection. If any fails, the broadcast may stop. Do not promise 24/7 continuity until you have tested the failure and recovery paths on the exact setup.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited guidance does not promise an archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. If keeping the complete program matters, arrange a separate local recording, verify that the file is being written, and ensure the disk has enough space. Do not rely on the live archive alone for a longer continuous broadcast.
Common problems and fixes
- Encoder overload or choppy output: simplify the scene, reduce the resolution or frame rate, then repeat a representative test. Basic OBS compatibility does not prove sustained streaming capacity.
- Dropped frames or stream-health warnings: test upload at the stream location, leave bandwidth headroom, reduce competing network use and retest. If Wi-Fi is unstable, compare it with a wired connection.
- The stream stops during an outage: identify whether the encoder, computer, router, ISP or power failed. Test recovery for each; the reviewed platform guidance does not prescribe one universal automatic restart solution.
- The stream does not start: check that live access is enabled, the channel meets YouTube’s verification and restriction requirements, and first-time activation has had time to complete.
- No complete archive appears: check stream duration. Automatic archiving is stated for streams under 12 hours, not for longer ones; use a separate recording plan when the full program must be preserved.
