YouTube 24/7 Streaming Service vs. OBS on a VPS: Which Should You Choose?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a hosted 24/7 streaming service if you want someone else to handle continuous playout; choose OBS on a VPS if you want direct control and are prepared to configure, monitor, and recover the system yourself. Neither option bypasses YouTube’s encoder requirements, copyright rules, archive limits, or monetization policies. The practical choice is between managed operation and hands-on control—not a guaranteed difference in price or reliability.

What each option involves

A hosted 24/7 service

A hosted service plays video continuously from its own infrastructure and sends the stream to YouTube. The amount of setup, monitoring, scheduling, and recovery it handles varies by provider, so check the service’s current features and terms rather than assuming “managed” means fully hands-off.

OBS on a VPS

You rent a virtual private server, install and configure OBS, provide the video and audio sources, and connect OBS to YouTube. You remain responsible for the VPS configuration and for dealing with encoder crashes, source failures, disconnections, and restarts. OBS control depends on the VPS’s available compute and graphics capabilities.

Compare the trade-offs

Consideration Hosted 24/7 service OBS on a VPS
Setup and operation The provider may manage continuous playout. Confirm what setup, monitoring, and recovery are actually included. You configure OBS and the server, and plan for restarts, crashes, and source failures.
Control Depends on supported sources, overlays, schedules, and stream controls. Direct control over OBS scenes, sources, encoder settings, and automation, subject to VPS capabilities.
Cost Check subscription charges, content or bandwidth limits, and fees for added features. Account for continuous compute, storage, outbound bandwidth charges or quotas, and your maintenance time. No authoritative like-for-like cost figure establishes that either approach is generally cheaper.
Reliability and recovery Review uptime commitments, incident information, alerts, and what happens after a disconnect. Review the VPS provider’s terms and build process supervision, reconnect and restart handling, monitoring, and backups.
YouTube delivery Confirm YouTube support, stream-key handling, output options, and restart behavior. Configure YouTube’s supported protocol and encoder settings, then confirm the selected VPS can sustain encoding.
Replays YouTube’s archive limits apply regardless of service. The same archive limits apply. You can arrange a separate recording, but must provision and monitor it.

For either route, test the complete video and audio path, monitor stream health, and check what happens after a disconnect and restart. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring its health through the encoder workflow.

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance either way

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. For RTMP/RTMPS, its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). The recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps and 12 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not proof that a particular VPS can encode steadily or that every network can sustain the rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Connect an encoder to YouTube

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, start the live-stream setup and locate the stream URL and stream key.
  2. If your encoder offers YouTube as a destination, select it. Otherwise, enter YouTube’s stream URL in the server field and copy the stream key into the key field.
  3. Set the encoder’s video format, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current guidance and your chosen output.
  4. Start the encoder, then use the Live Control Room workflow to verify the incoming feed and go live when prompted.
  5. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.

The exact encoder controls differ by software and VPS configuration. YouTube’s step-by-step instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Plan for YouTube’s replay and DVR limits

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, keep a separate recording or plan stream segments instead of relying on the archive. Details: Archive live streams.

DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond the 12-hour window, and some devices and apps have lower limits. A continuous stream therefore does not guarantee that viewers can rewind to any earlier point. See Turn on DVR on live streams.

Check rights and monetization before looping content

A 24/7 format does not grant permission to use the material in it. YouTube’s livestream terms say the creator represents that they have the necessary rights for worldwide use, including applicable music licensing rights. Review the livestream terms and conditions and confirm that you have the rights needed for every video, soundtrack, and other element. This is practical guidance, not legal advice.

Being live continuously does not guarantee monetization. YouTube applies its monetization policies to livestreams; its July 15, 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the existing policy. A loop’s eligibility depends on the channel and content. Review YouTube channel monetization policies before building a plan around ad revenue.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: check that the selected destination or entered stream URL is YouTube’s, and that the stream key was copied into the encoder’s key field. Confirm the encoder is running and inspect the Live Control Room’s incoming-stream status.
  • The stream disconnects or repeatedly stops: identify whether the failure is in the VPS, encoder, network path, or source. On a VPS, inspect logs and resource use, and configure monitoring and supervised restart or reconnect behavior. With a hosted service, check its stated recovery behavior and alerts.
  • Video stutters or the encoder cannot keep up: compare the output settings with YouTube’s recommendations, then verify the VPS can sustain the selected encode and network throughput. A recommended bitrate is not a VPS performance guarantee.
  • The stream is live but no replay appears: check its duration; streams longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Use a separate recording or shorter segments when preserving a replay is important.
  • Viewers cannot rewind far enough: DVR availability is subject to YouTube’s duration window and device or app limits.
  • A 24/7 loop is not monetized: continuous uptime alone does not establish eligibility. Review YouTube’s rules on inauthentic content and assess the originality and rights status of the actual material.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream at their original quality up to 4K 60fps at one price; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
