It depends on what you are streaming. A scheduled YouTube event does not transmit video by itself: an encoder must keep sending a feed. For a live camera, gameplay, or live production, move the encoder to an always-on computer, hardware encoder, or managed production setup. For prerecorded video, a cloud streaming service can play it while your home computer is off; a compatible standalone encoder is another option.
First, identify the kind of stream
The key distinction is whether the video is being created live or already exists as a recording.
- Live camera, gameplay, or production: Something must capture and encode the live input continuously. Turning off the computer running OBS or another encoder stops that feed unless encoding has moved elsewhere.
- Prerecorded video or a playlist: A cloud service or compatible hardware encoder can play the uploaded media and send it to YouTube without relying on your home computer.
YouTube describes an encoder as software on a computer or standalone hardware. It connects to YouTube Live using a server URL and stream key. Scheduling an event creates an upcoming stream experience; it does not create the encoded video feed.

2. For prerecorded videos: another cloud streaming service
YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded streaming without a dedicated PC. That directory description identifies the use case; it is not an independent performance assessment. Before choosing any hosted service, check its current YouTube support, looping and scheduling options, stream-duration limits, storage, monitoring and recovery behavior, and total subscription cost.
3. For prerecorded videos: standalone hardware
YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder. Its PlayToStream functionality is described as allowing prerecorded media to be scheduled and sent directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a specialized hardware route, not a requirement for every channel. Verify the device’s current availability, supported formats, and exact workflow before buying. A standalone encoder should not be assumed to replace a computer for every live-camera or gameplay setup.

4. For live camera or gameplay: move the encoder
If your feed is genuinely live, use an encoding device that remains on: a separate computer running your encoder, suitable standalone hardware for your input and production needs, or a managed broadcast setup that accepts the live source. A service designed to loop uploaded recordings is not automatically able to encode a live camera feed. Check supported inputs, output formats, monitoring, failure alerts, recovery, and ongoing cost before moving a production off your computer.
Schedule and connect a YouTube stream
YouTube’s documented workflow separates the scheduled event from the encoder that sends its program feed. Labels and controls can vary by workflow, so check the settings on the specific scheduled stream.

- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this ahead of the planned broadcast.
- Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Use the stream setup in Live Control Room to create the event and obtain its connection details.
- Connect the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder or service. A stream key works like a password and address: keep it private, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed.
- Wait for the preview and start the event. After the encoder connects, wait for YouTube to show the incoming preview. You may need to click Go live; scheduling alone does not guarantee that an event starts automatically. Check auto-start and auto-stop settings for that stream rather than assuming how they are configured.
- Check the feed and backup. Confirm that picture and sound are reaching YouTube. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup and checking that the archive file is growing. For a cloud or hardware encoder, find out how it signals a dropped connection and whether it restarts automatically.
Reliability, copyright, and archive limits
Cloud operation is not an uptime guarantee
Moving playback or encoding off your home computer removes that computer from the stream path, but it does not prove a service will never fail. Before relying on unattended playback, understand the provider’s monitoring, failure notifications, and restart behavior. For live production, test the actual input-to-YouTube workflow before an important broadcast.
Use content you have the right to stream
Whether you stream a recording or a live production, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other included material. A stream remaining online does not establish that its content is authorized. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and account restrictions before broadcasting; do not treat a playlist or a long-running channel as an exception.

Do not rely on YouTube as the only full-length recording
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and viewers cannot rewind to before the stream began. If keeping a complete copy matters, record separately rather than depending on the YouTube archive.
