How to Reduce OBS GPU Usage on a 24/7 YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce OBS GPU load by freeing capacity for scene rendering, simplifying costly sources, and lowering output resolution or frame rate only if needed. Hardware encoding can move encoding work off the CPU, but it does not eliminate the GPU work OBS needs to composite and render scenes. GPU usage by itself does not prove a stream is failing; check OBS’s rendering and encoding statistics, then test changes with your real scenes and motion before leaving a 24/7 stream unattended.

First identify what is using the GPU

OBS uses GPU time to composite and render a scene. A game or another GPU-heavy application may compete for the same capacity, so a game that appears smooth does not necessarily mean OBS can keep up. Encoding is a separate workload: a hardware encoder can handle encoding on specialized hardware, while OBS still needs GPU resources for rendering and compositing. See OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting and Hardware Encoding guidance.

Look at OBS’s Stats window for rendering lag and encoding lag. GPU utilization alone is not a diagnosis: without your OBS log, operating system, GPU, encoder, scene setup, and statistics, it is not possible to identify the specific bottleneck. Change one thing at a time and compare the counters and YouTube’s stream-health messages before and after.

Reduce competing GPU work first

Run OBS as administrator on Windows

  1. Close OBS.
  2. Right-click the OBS shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
  3. Check whether rendering lag improves under the same workload.

OBS says this can allow Windows to reserve GPU capacity for OBS in many cases. It is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee. Close only other programs you know are using substantial GPU resources.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Limit a game’s demand

If you are gaming while streaming, cap the game’s frame rate at your monitor’s refresh rate or enable V-Sync. If OBS still struggles, lower the game’s graphics quality. These steps reduce competing work while preserving the OBS output target.

Simplify scenes and sources

Review the active scene and remove sources that are not needed for the current show. Reduce expensive sources where practical, and use lower-resolution media or capture when full source resolution is unnecessary. OBS notes that full-canvas browser and media sources can still consume resources even when much of the canvas is empty. Its Sources Guide covers source management.

  • Keep only the sources needed in the active scene.
  • Use a source resolution suited to its on-screen size rather than retaining unnecessary detail.
  • Separate distinct show formats into scene collections rather than accumulating every setup in one collection. OBS describes their purpose in Scene Collections.

There is no fixed GPU saving per source established by OBS’s guidance, and hidden-source behavior can vary; verify the effect in your own setup rather than assuming each hidden source has no cost.

Lower OBS output demands if the earlier steps are not enough

In OBS, open Settings → Video and test a lower output resolution, frame rate, or both. OBS identifies output resolution as a factor in GPU resource use and frame rate as a factor in rendering and encoding. If 60 fps does not work reliably, OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps. Lowering the base canvas is more disruptive because sources may need repositioning; OBS reserves that suggestion for systems severely short on GPU resources.

Choose the output that suits the program and available capacity rather than chasing a particular GPU percentage. The official sources do not establish an ideal utilization target, a typical reduction, or a universal GPU specification for nonstop streaming.

Match encoder and YouTube settings to the output

OBS generally recommends a hardware encoder when supported, because a specialized encoder can take encoding work away from the CPU. Available encoders and their capabilities depend on hardware and platform: OBS documents NVENC and AMD AMF support on Windows and Linux, and Apple VideoToolbox with platform-specific limits. Check current support for your hardware and OBS version. Hardware encoding is not a blanket fix for GPU overload; scene rendering still needs GPU capacity, and an unsupported or overloaded encoder may not be suitable.

For YouTube, use a supported protocol and configure codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, rate control, and keyframes for the stream you intend to send. YouTube’s current live guidance specifies RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended live ingestion bitrates include:

Output AV1 or H.265 H.264
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended live-streaming bitrates, not universal minimums or GPU settings. Select the row and codec that match your output, and ensure your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. Consult YouTube Help’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its live recommendations. Do not confuse these live figures with YouTube’s separate upload-video bitrate guidance.

Use HAGS only as a Windows troubleshooting test

If you encounter performance issues or hardware-encoder failures on Windows 10 or 11, OBS says Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) may be responsible and recommends testing with it off, then rebooting. Follow OBS’s HAGS troubleshooting guidance for the Windows settings path. Compare results on your own machine: HAGS is not a universal optimization to turn on or off for every setup.

Validate before leaving a nonstop stream unattended

  1. Use representative scenes, audio, and movement; a static screen is not a useful substitute for the real program.
  2. Make one change at a time and observe OBS’s rendering and encoding counters.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test.
  4. Repeat the check after meaningful changes to scenes, sources, drivers, OBS, encoder settings, or the operating system.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. Its guidance does not specify a universal test duration or promise uninterrupted operation, so assess stability under the workload you actually plan to run.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube broadcast of uploaded videos rather than a live camera or desktop, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
