Short answer: You can use a phone in a YouTube Live workflow, but YouTube’s standard mobile-live instructions do not document selecting a video saved on the phone and looping it. For prerecorded playback, you need an encoder app or service that explicitly supports local video files and looping, then you must test it on your device. YouTube’s mobile and encoder guidance is global, not specific to India; the main India-specific practical issue is whether your chosen connection can sustain the upload.
What you need to know before you start
YouTube’s regular mobile-live workflow is designed for broadcasting from a phone; it does not establish that you can choose a stored video as the source. YouTube separately documents an encoder workflow that connects to a live event using a server URL and stream key. A phone-based prerecorded stream therefore depends on an encoder app that can play local media and loop it. YouTube’s documentation does not verify those app-specific functions, or promise that a particular phone can run unattended for 24 hours.
There is a second important limit: a 24-hour broadcast is not a dependable way to produce a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If you need an archive, plan shorter sessions and keep a local recording backup.
Check whether your channel can go live from a phone
YouTube’s mobile live-stream eligibility guidance, accessed in October 2026, requires at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, live streaming enabled, and a supported Android or iOS device. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. These are YouTube requirements, not India-specific rules.

Check current eligibility in YouTube Studio before setting up an encoder. If you have only just enabled live streaming, allow for the activation delay rather than troubleshooting the encoder as though it were the cause.
Choose a workflow that supports prerecorded playback

Before committing to an app, check its current documentation or ask its developer whether it can play a video stored locally, repeat it continuously, keep working when the screen is off, and reconnect after a network interruption. Run an unlisted test on the actual phone and app version you intend to use. A product appearing in YouTube’s encoder guidance is not proof that it supports all of these features.

Set up the YouTube event and connect the encoder
- Enable live streaming and confirm channel eligibility. Complete any required verification or activation in your YouTube account, then wait for first-time activation to finish.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule the live event you intend to use. Check the event’s visibility and details before sending viewers to it.
- Get the connection details. In the event or encoder settings, locate the server URL and stream key that YouTube provides for the stream.
- Enter them in the encoder app. Follow that app’s current instructions to connect it to YouTube. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not share it or show it in a recording or screenshot.
- Select the prerecorded file and enable looping. The exact controls depend on the app. If it cannot clearly play a local file and repeat it, it is not a confirmed solution for this workflow.
- Start with an unlisted test. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check that the correct event is receiving video and sound, and confirm that the loop behaves as expected before making the broadcast public.
Check upload capacity and keep the stream stable
YouTube’s streaming guidance says, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Use the encoder’s actual total bitrate when checking capacity, and test the connection at the place and time you intend to stream. A speed result from another location or time cannot guarantee a continuous upload.
- Use a reliable network and monitor both picture and sound throughout the test.
- Check whether the phone and encoder continue working when the display is off or the app is in the background; do not assume they will.
- Watch for heat, battery drain, app suspension, and network changes during a longer test. Those outcomes depend on the phone, app, and conditions.
- Do not assume that an Indian mobile plan or carrier will sustain a 24-hour upload. YouTube’s cited guidance does not compare India-specific coverage, data prices, or uptime.
Plan for archives, rights, and channel rules
Do not rely on a single 24-hour archive
YouTube may not capture streams that exceed 12 hours. If you need a replay, consider separate shorter sessions and retain your own local recording. This is archive guidance, not a guarantee that broadcasts will restart automatically or that successive sessions will have no gap.

Clear video and audio rights before going live
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the necessary rights, including music rights, and to comply with applicable law. Owning a downloaded copy or having permission to upload a video does not by itself establish permission to retransmit it live. If a rights holder has licensed material for your stream, YouTube advises that the channel may need to be allowlisted through Content ID to avoid interruption.

Troubleshooting common problems
