Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from OBS by enabling live streaming for your channel, creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, entering its stream URL and key in OBS, and maintaining a reliable computer and internet connection. The setup is only part of the job: for continuous broadcasting, plan for power, network or encoder interruptions, and do not assume YouTube will archive one uninterrupted 24-hour event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not promise an archive for a 24-hour stream.
Before you start: check channel access and plan the broadcast
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to stream. Its Help guidance also sets the minimum age for livestreaming at 16. Check the channel’s live-streaming access before configuring OBS; if access is unavailable, resolve that first.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled.
- OBS installed on a computer that can remain powered on and connected for the intended broadcast.
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the video and audio settings you choose. There is no universal upload-speed figure: the required rate depends on the stream settings and connection stability.
- Video and audio you have the rights to livestream and, if relevant, replay.
Decide whether you need one continuous event or a sequence of shorter scheduled events. The choice affects replay expectations: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, but does not promise an archive for a single 24-hour broadcast.
Create a YouTube encoder stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live.
- Choose the encoder workflow, then create or schedule the stream. Set its visibility and other event details for your intended audience.
- In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. OBS uses these to send its video and audio feed to YouTube.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not share it or show it in a screen recording. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
YouTube’s interface labels may change, but the essential values are the server or stream URL and the key shown for the encoder stream in Live Control Room.

Connect OBS and configure the stream
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select YouTube if it is offered, or choose the option to use a custom server and enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room.
- Choose a supported encoder and configure the video output. Use YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate recommendations rather than relying on a single generic bitrate. Confirm your internet connection can sustain the selected video and audio rate with room for normal variation.
- Use CBR (constant bitrate), H.264 as a broadly supported starting point, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its encoder guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 support depending on ingestion mode.
- Use RTMPS for a standard setup where available. YouTube recommends it because the feed is encrypted in transit to Google’s servers.
- Set audio to AAC or MP3. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio, it recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
- In OBS, set the canvas and output resolution and frame rate to match the content and what your encoder, upload connection and intended viewers can support. YouTube’s guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps; higher resolution or frame rate needs more encoder and network capacity.
For an ordinary SDR broadcast, RTMPS is the usual choice. HLS is a specialized alternative for supported codecs or HDR workflows; YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency and requires a specific delivery setup, including TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Use it only when your workflow requires it and your encoder supports the protocol.
Test in private before making the stream public
- Set the YouTube event to Unlisted for a test if you do not want it publicly discoverable.
- Start streaming in OBS ahead of the intended broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview before going public.
- Watch the test from a separate viewer device. Confirm that picture and sound arrive, that the audio is intelligible, and that there is no unintended blank, frozen or silent segment.
- Check OBS’s stream status and YouTube’s health indicators. If you change resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval or audio settings, test again before relying on them for a long run.
- If you have a backup encoder or alternate stream path, test failover in advance. A backup is useful only if it is configured and you know how to switch to it.
YouTube recommends preparing in advance, checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality. For a 24/7 channel, monitoring must continue after the initial test: arrange for a person or alerting process to notice a dropped stream, failed audio or video, and take action.
Keep OBS running around the clock
Plan for computer, power and network failures
OBS is software running on your computer, so the machine must stay on, and the connection must remain usable. Configure your operating system and computer so they do not sleep or shut down during the broadcast. Keep OBS and the stream scene simple enough for the machine to handle continuously, and check for overheating or resource pressure during the test.

Decide how you will restart OBS after a crash and how you will reconnect after an ISP or power interruption. A UPS can help bridge brief power loss for the computer and network equipment, but it does not fix an internet outage or YouTube-side failure. Size one based on the actual connected load and the runtime you need; there is no universal model or capacity for every setup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose one long event or shorter events deliberately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a guarantee for streams lasting 12 hours or more, and YouTube’s cited encoder guidance does not establish a maximum stream duration. If a replay matters, consider shorter scheduled events with deliberate transitions and verify current behavior in Studio before depending on a 24-hour VOD. If continuous viewing matters more than a single archive, plan how viewers will experience any transition between events.
Handle content rights and YouTube’s live checks
Use original material or obtain permission that covers the relevant livestream and replay use. YouTube scans live broadcasts for third-party content matches and may interrupt a stream. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID.

Do not assume that music, television, films, documentary footage or another live feed is free to rebroadcast because it is publicly available or because you credit its creator. YouTube’s terms require rights to use the content in the relevant territories and compliance with local rules. India’s Copyright Office describes limited, purpose-specific exceptions; those exceptions are not blanket permission to relay third-party material. For commercially important or legally uncertain programming, obtain rights-holder guidance or qualified legal advice.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | Incorrect stream URL or key, a reset key, or a channel that is not enabled for live streaming | Confirm live access in YouTube Studio, then copy the current URL and key from the correct event into OBS. Keep the key private. |
| Stream health reports unstable or the feed drops | Upload capacity or connection stability is inadequate for the selected settings, or the network has interrupted | Check the actual sustained upload connection, reduce the output bitrate or resolution if needed, and test again. Do not rely on a speed figure that ignores stability and overhead. |
| Video stutters or OBS struggles | The computer or selected encoder cannot sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate or encoding load | Check OBS resource indicators and reduce output demands or use a supported hardware encoder if available; repeat a long enough test to observe sustained behavior. |
| Viewers cannot hear the program | Wrong OBS audio source, muted output, or incorrect audio settings | Check the active audio meters in OBS, confirm the intended source is selected and unmuted, then verify playback from a separate viewer device. |
| Broadcast is interrupted after content matching | YouTube detected third-party material, or the relevant channel was not allowlisted by a rights holder in Content ID | Use content you control or have permission to stream, and resolve rights or allowlisting with the rights holder. Do not assume attribution or a license automatically prevents interruption. |
| A 24-hour stream has no expected replay | The automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, not as a guarantee for a 24-hour event | For future replay needs, plan shorter events and confirm the current archive behavior in YouTube Studio. |

Cost and workflow trade-offs
OBS itself is a software-first approach, but a 24/7 DIY stream uses electricity, a computer that can remain on, a stable internet connection and your time for monitoring and recovery. Optional backup equipment such as a UPS adds cost but only mitigates some power interruptions. There is no universal broadband plan or upload rate that guarantees a successful 24/7 stream; choose settings against your actual connection and test them under sustained use.
For prerecorded continuous programming, cloud playout is another service category rather than a requirement for OBS. Compare the current service terms, compatibility and costs before choosing one. YouTube also lists cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded streaming software among encoder options. A cloud playout service does not remove content-rights obligations or the need to check YouTube’s live status.
India-specific perspective
India’s National Informatics Centre describes webcast services for government and state events, including 24/7 services for government TV channels, and lists OBS among encoders used in its webcast technology. That shows institutional use of OBS and continuous webcasting in India; it does not imply that a home PC or consumer internet connection will achieve comparable uptime. If you are in India and choose StreamNeo, UPI is supported alongside cards.
