To play several videos one after another in OBS, add them to a VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. This creates a looping playlist, but it does not guarantee that a computer or stream will stay online continuously.
Set up a playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Open the scene. In OBS, select the scene that should play the videos. In the Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video. If the source is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
- Add the videos. Open the VLC Video source properties and add the media files to its playlist. Unlike the standard Media Source, VLC Video supports multiple media files in a playlist.
- Choose the order. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play files in list order, or turn it on for randomized playback. OBS documents off as the default.
- Enable repeat. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart the playlist after its last file. OBS documents this setting as on by default, but verify it in the source properties.
Choose VLC Video or Media Source
Use VLC Video when the scene needs to cycle through multiple files. A standard Media Source is for adding media files to a scene and can loop an individual file; VLC Video provides playlist-level looping and shuffle controls.

The OBS guide lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Support for a listed format does not ensure every file or codec will behave the same on every computer. Test the actual files in your OBS setup.
Check scene behavior and playback settings
- Visibility behavior: VLC Video can stop and restart playback when it becomes visible, pause and resume, or continue playing while hidden. Choose the mode that fits your scene changes. If the source should continue advancing behind another scene, select the option that keeps it playing while hidden.
- Network caching: The source exposes a network caching setting, with 400 ms shown as the documented default. This setting concerns network media; it is not a guarantee of reliable network playback.
- Audio and subtitles: VLC Video has audio-track selection and subtitle controls. Subtitles are documented as off by default; confirm the intended audio track and subtitle behavior for your videos.
Test the playlist before leaving it unattended
- Play each item in the list at least once. Check that video and audio appear as expected, and note any files that fail, freeze or play without sound.
- Let the final item finish and confirm the first item starts again. If playback order matters, verify that shuffle is off.
- Switch between scenes and confirm that the source’s visibility behavior matches your setup.
- Run an OBS test stream and check playback on YouTube itself, not just in the OBS preview.
These checks can catch file or configuration problems, but OBS’s source documentation does not promise uninterrupted operation through operating-system issues, codec problems, updates, power failures or network interruptions. A looping playlist controls what the source does after the final item; it does not by itself make a 24/7 stream resilient.

Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and restart OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
- The list stops after the final video: Open the VLC Video properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Videos play in an unexpected order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist to follow the listed order.
- Playback resets or pauses after a scene change: Review the source’s visibility behavior and select stop/restart, pause/resume or keep playing according to how you use scenes.
- A file has missing video or audio: Test that file on its own in OBS, check the selected audio track and confirm the file plays as expected. Format listings are not a guarantee that every codec and file will work identically.
- Network media stutters: The network caching control may be relevant, but its documented 400 ms default is not a reliability target. Test the media source and connection; do not assume a caching change can prevent network interruptions.
