For a spoken-word podcast with a mostly static scene, start in OBS at 720p, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and 8 Mbps video bitrate. Set a 2-second keyframe interval, stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and prefer RTMPS. Move to 1080p30 only if your computer and sustained upload connection pass a longer test. YouTube’s figures are encoder recommendations, not a promise that an Indian home connection can hold a stream indefinitely.
Recommended OBS settings for a podcast stream
YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. For a podcast where viewers mainly listen and the image changes little, 720p30 is a sensible starting point; it is practical advice, not a YouTube-prescribed podcast preset. Choose the highest setting that your machine and measured connection can sustain reliably.
| OBS setting | Starting value | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | Use a format supported by YouTube’s encoder guidance and available in your OBS build. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280 × 720 at 30 fps | Use 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps only after an extended test confirms stable encoding and upload. |
| Rate control | CBR | Constant bitrate is the recommended rate-control choice for this ingest setup. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps for 720p30; 14 Mbps for 1080p30 | YouTube lists these as recommended H.264 bitrates. Its listed minimums are 3 Mbps and 5 Mbps, respectively; minimum is not a prudent target for a long-running stream. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube supports AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; its advanced recommendations list 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo. |
| Color | Rec. 709, 8-bit for SDR | Use these settings for standard dynamic range output. |
| Transport | RTMPS | YouTube recommends encrypted transport; select it if your encoder connection settings offer it. |
These codec, bitrate, keyframe, audio, color, and transport recommendations come from YouTube’s encoder settings documentation, checked in 2026. OBS options vary with the installed build and supported hardware, so confirm the actual output encoder and format instead of assuming every computer exposes the same choices.
Choose a bitrate your Indian home connection can sustain
Do not set OBS to the maximum that a speed-test result briefly reports. YouTube recommends keeping 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream’s total bitrate. Include audio when estimating the total, and allow for other devices and network activity sharing the connection. YouTube’s advice is to leave that headroom; it is not an India-specific broadband measurement.

- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
- For 720p30, begin with the recommended 8 Mbps video bitrate, then verify that sustained upload capacity can carry the total stream bitrate plus the recommended headroom.
- For 1080p30, the recommended video bitrate is 14 Mbps, so it needs substantially more upload capacity than 720p30.
- Test at the time and on the connection you expect to use. A short speed test or a successful initial connection does not establish stability for a continuous broadcast.
- If others use the same connection, account for their traffic. Do not count bandwidth that is not consistently available to the streaming computer.
YouTube explains its headroom advice in Streaming tips (checked in 2026). There is no universal upload-speed target established for Indian homes; local ISP performance, Wi-Fi, shared usage, and conditions can differ.
Set up YouTube Studio and OBS before going live
- Enable live streaming and create the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if needed, then create a stream and open its Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s account and interface prompts; the exact availability or steps shown can depend on the channel.
- Protect the stream key. Copy the stream key from the stream settings into OBS’s streaming configuration. It is a credential that lets the encoder connect to your YouTube stream: do not share it, publish it, or include it in a screenshot. Reset it in YouTube if you believe it has been exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
- Match OBS output to the selected stream. Set resolution, frame rate, H.264, CBR, video bitrate, keyframe interval, audio format, and stereo settings to the values you intend to test. Use RTMPS if it is available in your OBS streaming configuration.
- Build the real podcast scene. Check the microphone, any music or other audio sources, scene layout, and any motion or overlays. A static graphic and a moving multi-camera scene place different demands on the computer, so test the actual production rather than a blank scene.
- Start a test and inspect the preview. Connect OBS to YouTube and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the configuration. YouTube says to test before starting a live stream; its encoder guide is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Check playback on the channel. Confirm the live page opens and that audio and video work on the channel, including on a mobile device. YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips advise monitoring the stream.
Prepare for a long-running stream
OBS settings alone cannot ensure uninterrupted 24/7 operation. A home-computer stream also depends on the computer, OBS, power, heat, the home network, and local conditions. YouTube’s guidance emphasizes reliable connectivity, testing, and monitoring; it does not establish a universal home-PC setup or guarantee continuous uptime in India.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Run the real scene and audio for an extended trial before depending on it. Watch for dropped frames, unstable stream health, audio problems, and changes in the computer’s behavior over time.
- Keep the computer and OBS session under observation while live. If the stream matters overnight or for multiple days, decide who can respond to a connection, power, or software failure.
- Consider whether viewers need DVR. YouTube says DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume. Lower latency can increase playback buffering; for a non-interactive podcast, ultra-low latency is usually not the priority.
- Review rights for every recording and any music or other material you include. A technically correct stream does not establish permission to broadcast its contents. Check applicable copyright rules and YouTube’s channel policies before scheduling repeated or continuous playback.
Troubleshoot common OBS and YouTube stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health is unstable or frames drop | Upload capacity, shared network use, Wi-Fi, or encoding load | Check the actual sustained connection and shared traffic; retain YouTube’s recommended upload headroom. Test at 720p30 before raising bitrate or resolution, and verify the computer can encode the real scene. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS stream | Stream key, selected stream, or connection configuration | Confirm OBS is using the key for the intended YouTube stream and that it has not been reset. Keep the key private; replace it if compromised. |
| Preview works but the live page is wrong or unavailable | Wrong stream or channel page, or broadcast setup not completed | Check the Live Control Room and confirm the intended stream is live, then open its channel page on a second device. |
| Video looks soft or stalls during motion | Resolution, bitrate, upload stability, or encoding capability | Compare the chosen resolution with YouTube’s H.264 recommendations and the connection’s tested capacity. Use 720p30 if 1080p30 does not remain stable in an extended test. |
| Audio is missing, distorted, or out of balance | OBS source selection, levels, or audio output format | Check the active microphone and scene sources, monitor levels, and verify stereo output at the selected supported sample rate and bitrate in the preview. |
| Stream stops after running for a while | Home power, computer or software state, heat, or network interruption | Check the machine and connection rather than changing bitrate blindly. A settings preset cannot prevent local outages; test and monitor the setup under the conditions in which it will run. |
