HGTV’s six-episode renovation competition 100 Day Hotel Challenge pits married developers Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt against each other as they lead teams renovating two neighboring hotels in Salter Path, North Carolina. Each team had 100 days and a stated budget of $225,000; HGTV’s current series page names Brian the winner.
What the competition is about
The projects are The Beacon Hotel, formerly the Salter Path Inn, and The William & Garland Motel. HGTV describes them as dated, family-owned properties that date to the 1950s; a later interview characterizes them as roughly 70 years old. They sit on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, where the teams were challenged to update the guest experience while responding to each hotel owner’s requests.
The competition was announced for a 100-day schedule with $225,000 per team. Those are the show’s stated constraints, not a published accounting of each project’s final construction costs.
How the renovation unfolds
The six episodes progress through distinct parts of hotel life, ending with the properties’ exteriors:

- Guest rooms: The teams begin with single and double rooms, balancing coastal style with modern features, storage and day-to-day functionality. In the premiere, Brian works with Bryan and Sarah Baeumler; Mika works with Jonathan Knight and Kristina Crestin.
- Lobbies: The next challenge shifts to the first space guests encounter, where design must serve both arrival and practical use.
- Kitchenettes: The teams take on compact guest amenities, with functionality part of HGTV’s stated design needs.
- Outdoor lounges: The competition moves outside to shared spaces for guests.
- Luxury suites: The teams tackle the hotels’ more elevated accommodations.
- Exteriors: The finale turns to the outside of each property and determines the overall winning spouse.
HGTV’s broader participant announcement includes Michel Smith Boyd, Galey Alix, Carmeon Hamilton, Grace Mitchell, Scott McGillivray, Lauren Makk, Cristy Lee, Poonam Moore, Kim Myles and Kim Wolfe, in addition to the experts featured in the premiere. The announcement covers the overall lineup; it does not, by itself, establish who worked on every individual space.
How spaces are judged—and what is at stake
Drew and Jonathan Scott select each episode’s winning space. HGTV says they consider amenities, the overall guest experience, design, the hotel owners’ requests and potential room-rate increases. The published criteria do not include a disclosed numerical scoring formula, so the contest is best understood as a set of judged renovation challenges rather than a transparent cost or performance comparison.

Who wins ‘100 Day Hotel Challenge’?
HGTV identifies Brian Kleinschmidt as the overall winner. The result caps a competition that compares the teams’ work across rooms, shared spaces, suites and exteriors—not a published head-to-head audit of final construction spending or hotel performance.
