Donald Trump took part in the ceremonial opening coin toss at the 126th Army-Navy Game in Baltimore on December 13, 2025. The toss prompted jokes and criticism from some viewers online, while Navy went on to beat Army 17–16. “Fumbles” is a figurative description of the toss, not a report of a football fumble.
What happened at the Army-Navy coin toss?
Trump flipped the opening coin before the game at M&T Bank Stadium. Army captains Andon Thomas and Kalib Fortner called tails, won the toss and elected to defer to the second half, according to Army West Point Athletics’ game recap, published December 13, 2025.
The White House’s December 15 recap likewise says Trump participated in the ceremonial toss. Its account describes him engaging with the crowd and standing with service members during the national anthem and military flyover; that is the administration’s description of his appearance, not an independent assessment of the toss or audience response. Read the White House recap.
Why did some viewers say the toss was awkward?
Contemporaneous coverage reported that some viewers on social media criticized or joked about the motion. The Independent’s headline called it “bizarre” and relayed one viewer’s description, “Worst I’ve ever seen.” Those phrases capture selected online reactions, not a measured verdict from football fans as a whole. The available coverage offers no representative poll or reaction statistic.

Did Trump fumble the football?
No. In this headline, “fumbles” refers figuratively to the ceremonial coin toss. Army’s recap separately describes an actual in-game fumble: Navy quarterback Blake Horvath lost the ball under pressure from Army’s Kalib Fortner, and Army recovered it. That play was unrelated to the pregame toss.
