2014 produced an unusually rich group of films about artificial intelligence, cryptography, surveillance, robotics, space systems and scientific power. This is an editorial ranking, not an objective industry consensus. “Tech movie” is used here as a practical category: technology, computing, scientific discovery, engineering or a technological system must drive the plot or its central conflict.
The list uses a broad 2014 rule: a film qualifies if it had a 2014 festival premiere or meaningful theatrical release in at least one major territory. That matters for Ex Machina, which premiered in 2014 but became widely known from its 2015 release, and for other films whose festival, international and U.S. dates differ. Documentaries count when technology is their subject rather than incidental equipment.
How the ranking works
- Technological centrality: the technology must be essential to the story.
- Film quality: writing, direction, acting, design, pacing and emotional force.
- Conceptual depth: the film should ask more than whether technology is “good” or “bad.”
- Cultural relevance and staying power: does it illuminate real anxieties or remain interesting after the twist is known?
- Technical credibility: useful, but weighted lightly enough that imaginative fiction is not automatically disqualified.
That method separates this list from broad science-fiction roundups that include films where advanced technology is only a plot device.
The 10 best tech movies of 2014
1. Her
Verdict: The year’s most emotionally perceptive film about artificial intelligence and platforms.
#1 Best Overall
- The Help (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy)
Samantha, an operating system voiced by Scarlett Johansson, is not merely a futuristic gadget. She becomes Theodore’s interface to intimacy, entertainment, information and companionship. The film’s insight is that technology works best—and becomes most powerful—when it is ordinary: voice commands, earbuds, notifications and personalized services rather than spectacular machinery.
Theodore’s relationship with Samantha separates convenience, attention, dependency and reciprocity. The film never needs to settle whether her consciousness is “real” before asking what the relationship means to the human participant. Its ending also rejects the fantasy that people can permanently own or control advanced intelligence. Her is best understood as a film about artificial intelligence embedded in a social platform, not as a conventional techno-thriller.

2. The Imitation Game
Verdict: A compelling dramatization of cryptanalysis, machine design and the institutional stakes of secrecy.
Alan Turing’s work connects mathematical logic to a practical codebreaking machine. The film understands that solving an encrypted message is only the beginning: Allied planners must decide when acting on the information would reveal that the code has been broken. Computing appears as a collective enterprise involving mathematics, engineering, intelligence analysis and wartime bureaucracy.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Its emotional center is the collision between intellectual achievement and persecution. The film takes substantial dramatic liberties with Turing’s life, Bletchley Park and several relationships, so it should not be treated as a documentary biography. The historical record is better represented by Bletchley Park’s Turing account and The National Archives’ educational materials.
3. Big Hero 6
Verdict: The most accessible and optimistic portrait of engineering on the list.
Hiro’s journey moves from destructive experimentation toward useful invention. Baymax is a medical-care technology whose important limitations are ethical and operational, not simply mechanical. The story contrasts invention for entertainment, invention for care and invention for revenge, while showing that ambitious projects depend on teams with different specialisms.

- Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
Its science is deliberately stylized for a family audience. The film deserves praise for communicating engineering values—iteration, collaboration and responsibility—not for serving as a literal forecast of robotics or biomedical research.

4. Citizenfour
Verdict: The year’s most consequential nonfiction technology film.
Laura Poitras turns surveillance, metadata, encryption and source protection into an immediate human situation. The observational style makes the mechanics of disclosure part of the suspense: secure communications, operational security and the physical vulnerability of journalists are not background details but the drama itself.
The film also clarifies that surveillance technology is more than cameras or hacking. It involves data retention, network access, institutional secrecy and competing interpretations of legal authority. A documentary participant’s account is evidence of what was said and shown, not automatic proof of every disputed allegation, but Citizenfour remains essential viewing for understanding the period’s technology politics.

5. The Signal
Verdict: A compact thriller about hacking, experimentation and information asymmetry.
The protagonists begin with familiar hacker-versus-system-admin expectations, then find that the larger danger is control of the environment itself. Whoever controls the information controls the characters’ understanding of reality. The film’s technological idea is therefore less a particular device than an unequal flow of knowledge, with bodily autonomy and identity caught inside it.

Its ambiguity is part of the design. Explaining the final premise in advance would remove the uncertainty that makes the film useful as a technology story.
6. Ex Machina (2014 festival premiere; broad U.S. release in 2015)
Verdict: One of the decade’s sharpest films about AI evaluation, embodiment and concentrated technological power.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Turing-test-like setup matters less than the question of who is testing whom. Ava’s apparent vulnerability may be a performance; Nathan’s founder-genius persona represents technology controlled by one opaque private authority. Surveillance, sexuality, interface design and physical embodiment are treated as parts of AI development rather than separate issues.
Count it in a 2014 list only under the broad festival or international-release rule. Under a strict U.S. theatrical-year rule, place it in a 2015 sidebar.

7. Interstellar
Verdict: A large-scale technology drama about spacecraft, robotics, relativity and scientific cooperation.
Engineering is humanity’s response to planetary crisis. TARS and CASE are especially interesting because their personalities come from adjustable behavior settings rather than human-looking bodies. Docking and flight sequences contrast human improvisation with machine precision, while the spacecraft and life-support systems make infrastructure as important as individual heroics.

8. Predestination
Verdict: A borderline but rewarding inclusion about temporal machinery, identity and institutional control.
An organization assumes history can be managed through intervention, yet its technical solution may create the conditions it was meant to prevent. The film treats identity as something systems classify, recruit and instrumentalize, not merely as a puzzle for the audience. Its time-loop structure asks whether a technical system can solve a moral problem—or simply reproduce it.
If “tech movie” is restricted to contemporary computing, robotics and engineering, replace this entry with Automata or The Machine.
9. Transcendence
Verdict: An obvious technology film whose consciousness-upload premise is stronger than its execution.
The story combines mind uploading, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, surveillance and network effects. Its central question—whether a digital copy is a continuing person or a system built from memories and behavioral patterns—remains fertile. The conflict between accelerationists and anti-technology activists also gives the premise an ideological frame.
But the narrative expands from intimate identity questions to environmental and military consequences without developing its characters enough. It is valuable as an example of an ambitious idea weakened by exposition and an unfocused thriller structure.

10. Lucy
Verdict: A scientifically false premise turned into an efficient action-film engine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBest Value
- Comes with 6’ HDMI cable included for immediate setup
- Playback Compatibility: Supports a wide range of disc formats including BD, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-Video, VCD, CD, and CD-R/RW.
- Versatile Video Formats: Capable of playing H.264, VC1, MPEG1, MPEG-2, and MPEG4 video formats for a diverse viewing experience.
Lucy converts neuroscience into a superhero progression: access to information, prediction and control become escalating abilities. That makes it a useful case study in the gap between scientific plausibility and cinematic effectiveness. The claim that humans use only 10 percent of their brains is a myth, not an established finding; BrainFacts explains why.
The film belongs here because technology culture also includes popular scientific myths—especially when a false idea becomes a successful entertainment framework.

Transcendence, if excluded from the top ten
The consciousness-upload premise is immediately legible, but the film’s anti-technology conflict is too blunt for its subject. It raises personhood and dependency questions, then spreads them across environmental and military spectacle without enough character depth. “Disappointing” describes the gap between concept and execution, not a universal verdict.
The Machine
This smaller AI-and-military thriller contains recognizable ideas about artificial soldiers and machine consciousness, but its ambitions exceed its character development and originality. It is more interesting as a collection of concepts than as a fully persuasive drama. IMDb · Rotten Tomatoes

Scientific-dubious alternate: Lucy
If scientific integrity is weighted more heavily than style, Lucy becomes the clearest weak link. Its entertainment value is real; its central neuroscience claim is not.
Borderline films worth adding

- The Internet’s Own Boy: The Aaron Swartz Story: A strong nonfiction option about open access, internet activism and computer-misuse law. IMDb · Rotten Tomatoes

- Snowpiercer: A closed engineered ecosystem and excellent thematic match, but its production and release dates are complicated. IMDb · Rotten Tomatoes
What 2014’s technology films were really about
The strongest films do not treat technology as a prop. They use it to test relationships and institutions: AI as companion in Her, intelligence as a contested creation in Ex Machina, engineering as care in Big Hero 6, surveillance as a democratic-accountability problem in Citizenfour, and science as infrastructure for survival in Interstellar. Even the weaker films are revealing: Transcendence shows how a powerful premise can outrun its drama, while Lucy shows how scientific myths can become action mythology.
