The change makes Search easier to reach on a phone; it does not, by itself, mean the app’s search engine was rebuilt or that results are guaranteed to be more accurate. The placement began rolling out during 2025 and was reported as fully rolled out on Android and iOS on June 10, 2026.
What changed in YouTube Music Search?
In the older mobile layout, people generally opened Search from a control near the top of the app. In the newer layout, tap the magnifying-glass icon in the bottom navigation bar. That puts Search within easier thumb reach on many large phones and makes it visible alongside the app’s other main destinations.
The redesign is an interface change, not proof of a measured improvement in search speed or ranking accuracy. YouTube has not published a time-saving measurement for it. Depending on the screen, you may still need to tap the search field near the top of the Search screen after opening it. Some longtime users may also need a little time to adjust to the new position.
The rollout began during 2025. On June 10, 2026, 9to5Google reported that the bottom-bar placement had reached full rollout on Android and iOS; YouTube’s official help documentation also notes that product experiences can differ by region. The interface may therefore still vary by account, country, app version, or device. 9to5Google’s rollout report and YouTube Music Help provide the relevant context.

How to search for a song on the mobile app
- Open the YouTube Music app on Android or iPhone.
- Tap Search or the magnifying-glass icon in the bottom navigation bar.
- If the keyboard does not appear, tap the search field.
- Enter a title, artist, album, lyric fragment, genre, podcast name, or other description.
- Use the categories or filters at the top of the results page, if shown, to narrow the results.
- Choose the song, album, artist, playlist, video, or podcast you want.
For example, you could search for Adele Hello, songs by Kendrick Lamar, or 90s alternative workout mix. A distinctive lyric fragment may help when you do not know the title, but it is not a guarantee that the official studio recording will be the first result.
YouTube’s Help page describes searching for music and podcasts and filtering results by category. It also notes that selected countries or regions may receive different product experiences. The mobile steps above do not necessarily apply to the web player, a TV, a game console, Android Auto, or a smart speaker.
Does the new placement actually make songs easier to find?
It most clearly makes the Search control easier to reach and notice. A bottom-bar shortcut can be more comfortable for one-handed use, particularly on a tall phone, and it remains available as a navigation destination across more of the app. Android Central described the layout change in terms of easier one-handed use, but there is no published usability result establishing that it reduces search time for everyone. Search still returns a mix of possible versions and formats. Depending on the query, results can include official audio, music videos, live performances, covers, remixes, lyric videos, and user-uploaded material. The bottom-bar move does not establish that the catalog expanded, vague lyric searches became more accurate, or the first result is always the canonical recording.
If you want a particular official release, check the artist or channel, album page, and release information rather than assuming the top result is the studio version. For a lyric search, try a distinctive phrase and inspect the result type before playing it.
Search changes YouTube documented in 2025
The bottom-bar move is separate from several search and discovery changes in YouTube’s official September 22, 2025 feature roundup, which covered features launched between April and August that year. These changes affect what may appear in results or where it appears, not the location of the Search button.

Ask Music radios can appear in Search
YouTube said Ask Music radios could appear prominently among Search results with an Ask entry point. This is for discovery requests such as “relaxing piano music” or “upbeat indie songs for a road trip,” where you want a generated radio or a music direction to explore. It is different from ordinary text Search for a known song title, and availability can vary. YouTube’s feature update describes the Search entry point.
Some long third-party song compilations are filtered
YouTube described filtering out third-party song compilations: long videos, over 30 minutes, made entirely from songs by other artists. The change is intended to reduce that particular kind of result for song searches. It does not mean every unofficial or duplicate result disappears; covers, live versions, remixes, lyric videos, and other uploads may still appear. YouTube did not publish an accuracy percentage or a complete description of how results are ranked. The scope comes from the same official announcement.

For song-related searches on smart TVs and game consoles, YouTube said an Other Performances shelf could appear when at least three matching videos were available. This is a living-room search feature, not evidence that the same shelf appears in the mobile app.

Artist audience figures may appear
YouTube’s roundup also said monthly-audience figures began appearing on Search and artist surfaces. That information can help distinguish artist pages or provide context, but it is not itself a way to refine a song query.
Choose the right tool for the music you want

Use Sound Search when you have a melody but not a name. YouTube’s documented workflow is for the mobile app and requires microphone access; it is not a promise that the same control exists on the web player or every connected device.

- Allow microphone permission for YouTube Music in your device settings if prompted or previously denied.
- Open YouTube Music and tap the Search control.
- Choose the Sound Search option, usually shown with a sound-wave or note-style icon.
- Play the song nearby, or sing or hum its melody.
- If a match is found, open it to play or save it. If not, try again with the most recognizable section.
A match is not guaranteed. Background noise, an unclear melody, or a different performance can make identification harder. Reduce noise and try a clearer or longer phrase; if you remember words, search a distinctive lyric separately. For the official workflow, see YouTube Music Help.
Search within a playlist, not the whole catalog
Find in playlist is a separate, later feature—not part of the original 2025 placement change. It is intended to locate a song, artist, or album inside a particular playlist. Reports in February 2026 described a staged rollout, so the option may not appear for every account. PiunikaWeb’s rollout coverage and Tom’s Guide’s report discuss the feature.
- Open the playlist you want to search.
- Open its three-dot options menu.
- Look for Find in playlist, Search in playlist, or a similar localized label.
- Enter a song, artist, or album name and select the matching item.
If the option is missing, update the app and check again later: a server-side rollout may not reach an account simply because it has the latest version. Do not assume that global Search searches only your library or the playlist you have open.
Is YouTube Music Search available without Premium?
Ordinary Search is not presented by YouTube as a Premium-only feature. YouTube’s documentation for its free, ad-supported tier lists on-demand playback of songs and music videos, alongside features such as queuing, repeat, unlimited skips, Samples, and Music Tuner, subject to the service’s applicable limits. YouTube’s free-tier details explain that experience.
Premium is relevant to listening convenience, not to the relocated Search control. YouTube Music Premium adds ad-free music and music videos, background play for music, audio-only playback, and downloads for offline listening. Plan availability and terms vary by country; podcasts can have different background-play rules and may include creator-inserted promotions. YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium, while Music Premium does not automatically include all YouTube Premium benefits. What to do if Search or a related control is missing
- Check which app is open. The bottom-bar change discussed here is for the YouTube Music mobile app, not the standard YouTube app.
- Update YouTube Music, then close and reopen it. This can address an outdated or temporarily incomplete interface, though it cannot force a staged account rollout.
- Look for the older Search control. If the bottom-bar icon is absent, check the top area of the app; some accounts may still see a different layout.
- Check the navigation bar. Confirm that Search is not off-screen in a horizontally scrollable or customized navigation area, if your version offers one.
- For Sound Search, check microphone access. Microphone permission is needed for listening, singing, or humming identification.
- For Find in playlist, check the playlist menu. The feature is separate and may not yet have reached your account.
- For a control that remains missing or broken, use Help & feedback in YouTube Music to report it.
Interface differences can reflect platform, country, account, or rollout status rather than a problem with the phone. Avoid unofficial app rollbacks: older versions can create security, compatibility, account, or playback issues.
