If JioCinema shows “Network Error” or “Network is not available,” first check whether other websites work, then try a different connection. The message can come from an unstable network, app or device trouble, a VPN/proxy block, an account restriction, or a temporary service issue—not just a disconnected Wi-Fi signal.
JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar were brought together under JioHotstar in February 2025. Older app shortcuts, TV menus and help pages may still say JioCinema; on current devices, look for the official JioHotstar app or visit hotstar.com/in.
Try these fixes first
Work through these checks in order, stopping when the service works. They begin with low-risk tests and avoid resetting app data or network settings before you know where the fault lies.
- Check whether the internet works outside the app. Open two or three unrelated websites in the device browser and, if possible, try another streaming service. Jio’s mobile FAQ specifically recommends opening a website in Safari or Chrome. If nothing loads, troubleshoot the internet connection first. If other services work, continue with the app, device, account and service checks below.
- Switch connections as a test. On a phone, try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or trusted Wi-Fi instead of mobile data. On a TV, you can briefly connect to a phone hotspot to compare. If JioHotstar works on one connection but not another, the problem is more likely specific to the router, ISP route, DNS filtering, security controls or local congestion than to your account. Jio’s TV FAQ also advises testing another internet connection.
- Pause competing internet use. Stop downloads, torrents, video calls, cloud backups, other streams and large game or system updates. Jio’s older JioCinema help cites 2 Mbps as a minimum internet-speed threshold; it is not a guarantee of smooth HD, live sports or simultaneous playback on several devices. The same FAQ recommends pausing other bandwidth-heavy activity.
- Force-close the app and reopen it. Close JioCinema or JioHotstar completely, removing it from the recent-apps screen if needed, then open it again. Repeatedly tapping retry while the connection is failing can make it harder to tell whether the connection has recovered.
- Restart the device. Restart your phone, tablet, TV, streaming stick or set-top box, then try again. This is among the first-line steps in Jio’s mobile guidance.
- Restart the router or home gateway if the issue is on Wi-Fi. Close the streaming app, power-cycle the router or Jio Home Gateway, wait for its internet indicator to stabilize, reconnect the device and test again.
Turn off VPNs, proxies and traffic-routing tools
Temporarily disable VPN apps, proxy settings, browser privacy or traffic-routing extensions, and router or security software that sends traffic through another country. Then reopen the service. JioHotstar’s support page displays a specific warning when it detects a VPN, proxy or unblocker, so this kind of message can look like a connection problem.

A VPN is not a dependable workaround: it can trigger detection, slow streaming or create a location mismatch. JioHotstar’s terms describe access and compatibility conditions that can change. If you are outside India, see the location section below rather than trying to bypass regional controls.
Clear the app cache without losing your login
A cache is temporary app data; clearing it can help if that data has become stale. Start with Clear cache, not Clear data. Clearing data can sign you out and remove local app data, so you may need to sign in again.
Android phones and tablets
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps or Applications, then select JioCinema or JioHotstar.
- Open Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache, then reopen the app.

Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV
The wording differs between devices, but the usual route is Settings → Apps/Applications → Manage installed apps or Downloaded apps → JioCinema/JioHotstar → Clear cache. If you cannot find the same labels, look in the device’s app-management settings rather than resetting the TV.
Jio Set-top Box
Jio’s OTT quick-fix guide gives this route: Settings → Applications → Downloaded Apps → select the app → Clear Cache. If that does not help, Clear Data is a next step, but expect to sign in again. If clearing app data still does not resolve the problem, restart both the Jio Home Gateway and the set-top box.
Update or reinstall the official app
- Open Google Play, Apple’s App Store, or the device manufacturer’s official app store.
- Search for JioHotstar and install any available update.
- Restart the device and test playback.
- If the updated app still fails, uninstall it, restart the device, reinstall it from the official store and sign in again.
Do not install old JioCinema APK files from third-party sites. They may be outdated, modified, incompatible or unsafe. Jio’s legacy FAQ advises keeping the app updated for bug fixes and compatibility improvements.

Check browser and device compatibility
If you watch on a computer, try a normal browser window, allow cookies and JavaScript, and temporarily disable ad blockers, script blockers or privacy extensions. Clear the site’s cache and cookies for hotstar.com, then test another supported browser. For mobile, JioHotstar’s current terms say mobile-browser streaming is not supported; use the official app instead.
The same published terms list these minimums. They are compatibility guidance, not a promise that every device meeting a version number will work; check the current official support information for your exact model.

Check the account, plan and title
A generic playback failure is not always a network fault. Check whether the app opens but only premium content fails, whether one live event fails while other titles play, whether the issue began after changing devices, or whether only one title is unavailable. Access can depend on your plan, bundled Jio entitlement and the content’s rights.

For a Jio Set-top Box, check the active plan or OTT entitlement in MyJio → My Plan. If you are using a JioHotstar subscription, confirm its status through the official account or plan page. A missing entitlement will not be fixed by changing DNS or restarting the router; only consider a plan change if the account check shows that the content is not included.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate a TV or set-top-box problem from a network problem
If playback works on your phone but not the TV, focus on the TV’s app, software, compatibility and connection. Update the TV app and firmware, clear the app cache, restart the TV and router, and test a different network. On a Jio Set-top Box, follow the cache and gateway steps above. If it works on a phone hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, investigate the home network rather than assuming the TV app or subscription is at fault.
If it works in a browser but not the app, the failure is more likely app-specific: clear cache, update or reinstall, check the device date and time, and sign out and back in. If it works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data, check mobile coverage and data connectivity. If it works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi, router filtering, parental controls, local congestion, DNS or ISP routing may be involved. Changing DNS is only a possible network-specific diagnostic, not a universal fix; avoid treating arbitrary DNS changes as guaranteed.

Check location availability and possible service incidents
JioHotstar is India-focused, and availability can depend on location and content rights. An error outside India may therefore reflect a location restriction rather than a broken internet connection. An Indian account, Indian payment method or VPN does not guarantee access abroad. Use a streaming service officially available in your country instead of trying to bypass geographic restrictions. The older official Hotstar FAQ says membership is available only in India and notes that content can be geographically restricted.
To check whether the problem is broader than one device, try both the app and hotstar.com/in, test Wi-Fi and mobile data, and see whether another device on the same network has the same failure. If every device and connection fails at once, wait a while and retry; do not assume an outage without confirmation from an official channel. Jio users can raise or track a service request through the Jio Service Support Portal.
When to contact support
Contact Jio or JioHotstar support if the error remains after the connection, app and account checks, or if the same failure follows you across devices and networks. Include enough detail to distinguish an account issue from a device or network fault:
- The exact error text and a screenshot, if available.
- Device make and model, operating-system or TV firmware version, and app version.
- Whether you are using Wi-Fi, mobile data, a Jio Set-top Box or another ISP.
- Whether the app works on another network or device, and whether the web version works.
- Whether all titles fail or only one title, live event or type of content.
- Your country/region and the date and time of the failure, including time zone.
For TV-specific buffering and playback issues, Jio’s TV FAQ advises trying another connection, logging out and back in when buffering continues despite a good connection, and contacting support if the problem persists.
