1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSpotify did test a Premium prompt for lyrics with some Free users in 2023, but that was not evidence of a permanent, global paywall. Spotify’s current support documentation says standard lyrics are available on both Free and Premium plans, subject to song, device, market, and rights availability. The clearest lyrics-specific Premium feature in Spotify’s latest announcement is offline lyrics, which is rolling out to Premium users.
What Free users saw in September 2023
On September 5, 2023, users reported that selecting lyrics in Spotify could bring up a message inviting them to get Premium instead of showing the words. Tech Times reported those complaints at the time (Tech Times, September 5, 2023).

The reports did not show that every Free account was affected. Radio Ink reported Spotify’s response that the change was routine testing involving a limited number of users in two markets; the reporting did not identify those markets or establish a permanent launch (Radio Ink, September 5, 2023). A Premium prompt on one account was evidence of a test or restriction for that user, not proof of a policy for all Free listeners.
Why the test stood out
Spotify had announced lyrics for both Free and Premium listeners in November 2021, describing a global rollout across major supported platforms (Spotify Newsroom, November 18, 2021). Against that baseline, the 2023 reports raised the possibility that Spotify was testing a change to an established cross-tier feature. Encouraging upgrades may have been one possible business rationale, but Spotify’s reported public explanation was routine testing, not a confirmed statement of motive.

What Spotify says about lyrics now
Spotify’s support page says lyrics are available to Free and Premium users, while warning that they are not available for every song or device and can vary by market and rights-holder agreements (Spotify Support: View lyrics). Availability can also change over time. So a missing lyrics panel does not, on its own, mean a listener needs Premium.
Spotify’s February 4, 2026 announcement makes the distinction between online access and offline access clearer: lyrics, previews, and translations are available to both tiers, while offline lyrics are rolling out for Premium users (Spotify Newsroom, February 4, 2026). “Rolling out” does not mean every eligible account necessarily has the feature already.

How to find lyrics and check a missing panel
Open the lyrics display
- Start a song and open the Now Playing screen.
- Look beneath the album artwork or over the Canvas area for the lyrics preview.
- On mobile, if the preview is hidden, tap the three-dot menu and choose Lyrics to show or hide it. Spotify’s interface can differ by device and account (Spotify Support: View lyrics).
If lyrics do not appear
Try several tracks rather than drawing a conclusion from one song, then check the same account on another supported device or on desktop and mobile. Update Spotify through your device’s official app store, sign out and back in, and check that you are online if you are looking for standard online lyrics. These are practical checks, not a guarantee that a particular track has licensed lyrics.
Spotify identifies song, device, market, and rights agreements as factors in availability. A temporary service or app issue, an account-level experiment, or confusion between online and offline lyrics are also possible explanations. If lyrics are missing across multiple tracks and devices, contact Spotify Support.

Should you subscribe just to get lyrics?
For ordinary online lyrics, a subscription is difficult to justify on lyrics alone while Spotify’s support page lists that feature for Free listeners too. Offline lyrics are the clearest lyrics-specific Premium addition identified in Spotify’s latest announcement. Premium may make more sense for someone who also wants its broader subscription benefits; Spotify’s U.S. Premium page lists plan options, but prices and eligibility vary and should be checked for the reader’s country (Spotify Premium U.S.).
If Spotify lacks lyrics for a particular track, standalone services such as Musixmatch or Genius may offer another way to look them up, but they are not the same as lyrics integrated into Spotify playback. Their availability and terms can differ.
