As of August 18, 2026, eligible users in the United States with English-language accounts can submit short, sourced notes; YouTube reviews them, and only notes it judges helpful may appear below a video. Other viewers may see published notes without being eligible to write them.
What YouTube Viewer Notes do
YouTube calls the feature Viewer Notes or notes on videos—not “Community Notes,” though it is similar in concept to X’s feature. A note can add relevant context, correct an inaccurate or unclear claim, explain that footage is old or that circumstances have changed, or clarify parody or misleading framing. It can address a video generally or point to a specific moment with an optional timestamp. Authors can also include links to sources.

Published notes appear below the video, and viewers do not see the author’s channel name. Unlike ordinary comments, notes are intended to provide concise context and go through a separate review and rating process before publication.
How the 2024 test became a limited feature
YouTube announced the experiment on June 17, 2024, initially for a small number of invited contributors in the United States using English-language settings on the mobile app. Its examples included identifying a song as parody, noting that a newer version of a reviewed product exists, and clarifying that old footage is being presented as current. YouTube cautioned at the time that early notes could be mismatched or incorrect while it learned how to improve the system. YouTube’s original announcement describes that pilot.

YouTube’s current Help page describes how eligible users can write notes, and its viewer updates listed Viewer Notes as available to eligible viewers in November 2024. The current documented writing scope remains the United States and English; this is not evidence of a universal launch. See YouTube’s viewer updates and its current instructions for writing notes.
Who can write notes—and who can see them
Writing access is not automatic, even if a channel meets the stated criteria. YouTube says a qualifying channel must:
- Be at least six months old.
- Have no Community Guidelines strike in the preceding 12 months.
- Not be a supervised account.
- Not have multiple owners; Brand Accounts and school-managed accounts that can be owned and managed by multiple users are not eligible.
- Be based in the United States, with the account language set to English.
Users may also need to sign up and wait for access or an invitation. By contrast, people who cannot write notes may still see published notes on mobile devices and computers. YouTube does not require a Premium subscription in the cited instructions.

How to sign up and submit a note
Sign up in the mobile app
- Sign in to the YouTube mobile app using the channel you intend to use.
- Tap your profile picture, then open Settings.
- Select General, then tap Help inform viewers.
- Follow the sign-up instructions. YouTube says it will notify eligible users when they are taken off the waitlist or otherwise receive access.
Write on a supported video
- Open the video in the YouTube mobile app.
- Under the video, select Add note.
- Write a note of 600 characters or fewer.
- Optionally add a timestamp and one or more supporting source links.
- Select Submit.
The option is unavailable on private videos, Made for Kids videos, and videos that may feature minors. Availability can also vary by account, video, device, and rollout state.
What makes a note useful—and more likely to appear
YouTube recommends original wording, clear and accessible language, neutrality, relevant sources for factual claims, and context that directly addresses something in the video or title rather than repeating what is already obvious. A timestamp can help identify the passage at issue. “This video is biased” or “I disagree” is not specific, verifiable context.
After submission, third-party human evaluators review and rate notes for qualities such as helpfulness, clarity, neutrality, and source quality. YouTube says its system looks for agreement among raters with different historical rating patterns. That is more than a simple count of likes or upvotes: a note is not published merely because one group supports it, and submission does not guarantee publication. YouTube describes the process in its Help documentation.

If Add note is missing, or a note seems wrong
If you were notified that you have access but cannot write, first check that you are signed into the same channel named in the invitation. The channel may still be waiting for activation, the video may be excluded, or access may not be enabled for that account or video. The documented writing criteria are US-based and English-language, so location or language may also explain the absence of the option.
Viewers who think a published note is incorrect can open the menu beside it and choose Send feedback. The note’s author can delete their own note, including after publication, but removal may take several hours. YouTube’s cited instructions do not establish a general creator veto over a published note.

A note is a contextual layer, not a formal ruling that a video is false. It does not, by itself, remove a video, issue a strike, or demonstrate that YouTube has taken enforcement action. YouTube’s original announcement acknowledged that notes could be incorrect or poorly matched; broad helpfulness ratings reduce some risks but do not guarantee accuracy, completeness, or agreement with every reader. Check the cited sources and distinguish a factual correction from an interpretation.

Likewise, the absence of a note is not confirmation that a video is accurate. No note may have been submitted, a submission may not have met the publication threshold, the video may be ineligible, or the feature may not be available in that situation. The system can add context without requiring a video to be removed, but a public annotation layer can also invite partisan or retaliatory submissions; YouTube’s neutrality, relevance, sourcing, and Community Guidelines rules are intended to constrain that risk, not prove it cannot occur.
How the feature compares with X’s Community Notes
The useful comparison is the general approach: users propose context, other people assess it, and publication depends on support across people whose past ratings differ. YouTube’s official materials use “Viewer Notes” and “notes,” so “Community Notes” is best treated as a comparison, not YouTube’s product name. The feature covers more than political fact-checking: its stated uses include parody, product updates, and clarifying old footage, as well as challenging misleading claims.
