You personalize it in separate places: your listener profile and privacy, recommendation feedback, playlists, playback and download settings, and Alexa. The available controls depend on your app version, device, country, and subscription. Update the Amazon Music app, then sign in to the Amazon account you want to use before following the steps below.
Start with the right Amazon Music app and account
These instructions are for the consumer Amazon Music app, not Amazon Music for Artists, which is a separate service for artists and their teams. Sign in with the Amazon account associated with the music access you intend to customize. Amazon Music Prime, Unlimited, and free or ad-supported access where available do not necessarily offer the same catalog, on-demand playback, downloads, or audio formats. Features also vary by country, device, operating system, and account rollout.
Menu names move between app versions. On iPhone and Android, Settings may appear as a gear icon or under a profile/avatar menu. If a path below does not match your screen, update the app and look for the named setting in the nearest equivalent menu. Web, Fire TV, and Alexa interfaces may have fewer controls than mobile.
Edit your profile and review privacy
Change your name, image, and follower setting
- Open Amazon Music on your phone.
- Tap the gear-shaped Settings icon, usually near the upper-right corner. If it is not visible, tap the profile or avatar entry and look for Settings.
- Choose My Profile.
- Edit your profile name and image, and review who can follow you. Amazon community guidance reports the choices as Everyone or No one; your current app may present different wording or options.
- Tap Save if the screen offers it.
Amazon community guidance says the profile name and image may also appear in other Amazon experiences, such as lists, registries, and product reviews, so do not assume this is a music-only identity. Profile visibility can also affect what followers see, including follower information and public playlists. Review playlist visibility separately rather than assuming that restricting followers makes every playlist private. The same guidance describes restricting followers as the available alternative to deleting a Music profile entirely; account options can change. Amazon’s profile guidance

Improve recommendations without expecting an instant reset
Give the app clearer signals
- Like songs and artists you genuinely want to hear more often; use Dislike or equivalent negative feedback when the control is available.
- Follow artists you want to keep up with and make playlists that reflect the music you actually want to revisit.
- Avoid letting unrelated music play repeatedly on the account whose recommendations you are trying to shape.
These are practical feedback signals, not a published formula: Amazon has not established a precise weighting for likes, listening, follows, or playlist additions. Adding a track to a playlist should not be treated as identical to pressing Like. Amazon Staff community guidance also recommends managing listening history or clearing past data where those controls are available, but it does not promise a complete or immediate recommendation reset. Amazon’s recommendation guidance
Recover from household or accidental listening
- Stop playing the unwanted music on the affected account or profile.
- Remove unwanted likes or playlist items where the app allows it.
- Open Settings or the listening-history controls, if present, and manage or clear relevant history.
- If the activity is unfamiliar, review account security and signed-in devices.
- Where supported, separate household listeners with their own Amazon accounts or Alexa profiles.
Recommendations may take time to change. If they remain inexplicably wrong, use the app’s Settings or Help & Feedback area to report the issue.

Create playlists you can control
Add tracks and organize a playlist
- Find a song or album and open its More Options menu, usually shown as three dots.
- Choose Add to Playlist.
- Select an existing playlist or create a new one, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- Open the playlist to find available controls for renaming, reordering, removing, or adding items. Options vary by app version and playlist.
Amazon community guidance documents the three-dot menu followed by Add to Playlist; labels can differ. Amazon’s playlist and station guidance
Playlist or station?
A playlist is the dependable choice when you want to select and arrange specific tracks yourself. Stations are generated or curated rather than being a manually editable track list. Older Amazon Staff guidance said users could not create custom stations. If your current app does not show a create-station option, build a playlist instead; do not assume every account has a user-created genre station.

Playlists can be affected by catalog licensing changes, so a track may later become unavailable. A playlist can appear across devices, but downloaded copies are stored on the device that downloaded them. Adding a track to a playlist does not download it, and removing a download does not necessarily remove the track from the playlist. Playback and offline rights depend on the plan and the item; check playlist visibility if you do not want followers to see it.
Adjust streaming quality, data use, and formats
Choose streaming and download quality
- Open Amazon Music Settings.
- Look for Streaming Quality, Download Quality, Data Usage, or a similarly named audio section.
- Set streaming and download quality separately if both controls appear. Use any Wi-Fi-only or data-saving option shown if you want to limit mobile data.
- Play a track and check the Now Playing screen for an HD, Ultra HD, Dolby Atmos, or 360 Reality Audio badge where the app displays one.
Higher quality can use more mobile data and storage. A format badge alone does not guarantee that you will hear that format: the plan, track, network, app path, and playback equipment all matter. Bluetooth, unsupported hardware, or a constrained connection can limit what reaches your ears. Spatial audio can sound different from stereo and is a matter of preference as well as compatibility.

Amazon’s Music FAQ describes HD, Ultra HD, Dolby Atmos, and 360 Reality Audio availability as dependent on compatible content and playback conditions, and says the app can play the highest quality supported by the device and network. Plan, region, track, and device restrictions apply; do not infer that every subscription or device can use every format.
Find music in a specific audio format
Where the current app offers these controls, tap Find and choose a format category such as Ultra HD, Dolby Atmos, or 360 Reality Audio. Alternatively, search for a track, album, or artist, tap Filter, and select the format. Amazon documents format badges and filtering in its FAQ; the labels and location may vary in your app.

Manage offline listening
On a device that supports downloads, open an eligible album or playlist and use its download control. Available offline playback depends on the plan and content. Higher download quality takes more storage, and changing the quality setting may not change files already saved. If an existing download sounds or appears to use the old quality, remove that local download and download the item again after changing the setting. Check the format badge during playback where available.
Downloads are local copies, not a guarantee that a title will remain in the catalog indefinitely. Licensing changes can make playlist items unavailable; downloading a playlist does not prevent a catalog change from affecting a track.
Set up Alexa separately
Link a music service and select a default
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Under Alexa Preferences, choose Music & Podcasts.
- Tap Link New Service, choose a supported provider, and complete its sign-in flow.
- Manage linked services and choose a preferred or default service if that control appears in your version of the app.
Amazon’s Alexa help documents this linking path; options may vary by country and app version. Alexa Help: Link Music Streaming Services to Alexa
Switch profiles when the wrong person’s music plays
Amazon’s Alexa guidance supports voice commands such as “Switch profiles” and “Switch to [profile name].” A listener’s Alexa profile, Amazon Music profile, and profile at a third-party music service are not necessarily the same thing. Each listener may need an individual Amazon account for their own linked music account. Amazon also says Alexa child profiles cannot be linked directly to child profiles in a third-party music service and may use the main account holder’s music-service profile.
- Confirm which Alexa profile is active; say “Switch profiles” or “Switch to [profile name]” and retry.
- In Alexa’s Music & Podcasts settings, confirm the intended service is linked and set as the default if that option is available.
- Specify the service in your voice request if Alexa continues to use the wrong one.
- Check account linking and household or voice-profile setup if the problem persists.
Try newer discovery tools only if your account shows them
Amazon announced AI-powered music search on May 20, 2025, describing a beta for some Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers in the United States on iOS, with richer recommendations and AI-generated playlist starting points. It is not a standard control for every listener. If your account has it, availability may depend on country, plan, device, and rollout. About Amazon’s announcement
Quick Recap
Troubleshoot missing controls and unexpected results
| Problem | Likely reason | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Settings or My Profile is missing | The app layout differs, the app is outdated, or you are in Amazon Music for Artists. | Update the consumer app; look under the avatar/profile menu or for a gear icon. Confirm you are signed into the consumer Amazon Music app. |
| Recommendations still reflect the wrong listening | Unwanted listening continues on the profile, history has not been managed, or another household member is using the account. | Stop the unrelated playback, remove unwanted feedback where possible, review history and account security, and separate household listeners where supported. Allow time for recommendations to adjust. |
| Quality or format controls are missing | The app version, plan, track, device, network, or playback interface may not support the control or format. | Update the app, check Settings and Now Playing, try a compatible mobile device, and confirm the track and plan support the format. |
| Downloaded music does not reflect the new quality setting | The local file may have been downloaded before the setting changed. | Remove the affected local download, set the desired download quality, and download it again. |
| Alexa plays another person’s playlist | The active Alexa profile, linked account, or default service may be wrong. | Switch profiles, verify the linked account and default service in Music & Podcasts, and specify the service in the request. |
| A playlist track is unavailable | Catalog or licensing availability may have changed. | Check whether the track remains available to your account and replace it with an available version if needed. |
Know what customization does not guarantee
- There is no universal control over Amazon Music’s recommendation algorithm or a guarantee that history changes will reset recommendations instantly.
- A custom, manually editable station is not guaranteed; a playlist is the practical fallback when the app offers no station-creation control.
- Not every plan, country, device, track, or playback route exposes the same catalog, quality, offline, or spatial-audio features.
- Changing a listener profile does not necessarily change only Amazon Music, and Alexa household profiles are distinct from Music and third-party service profiles.
