If Netflix audio plays while the video is solid green, start with a full computer restart, then test another title and another supported browser. The fault is usually in video rendering, a graphics driver, protected-content playback, or the connection to an external display—not your Netflix account. Work through the checks below in order; hardware-acceleration and display changes are reversible tests, not guaranteed fixes.
Updated October 3, 2026. Netflix’s browser versions and device requirements can change; check its current browser requirements when troubleshooting compatibility.
Start with the quickest checks
- Try another title. If only one movie or episode is affected, report that title as described below before changing device settings.
- Close Netflix and shut down the computer fully. Do not just close the lid. Leave the computer off for at least 10 seconds, restart it, and test again. Netflix recommends this shutdown sequence for green-screen playback problems: Netflix green screen help.
- Close unnecessary tabs and applications. They can consume memory and processing resources needed for playback. Netflix includes this among its video troubleshooting steps: Netflix distorted or glitchy video help.
- Test windowed playback. If the green screen occurs only in fullscreen, continue to the display and HDR checks below.
- Update your browser and operating system, then test Netflix again.
A solid green picture with sound is different from a black screen, buffering, stuttering, or an error code. If Netflix shows an error code, follow that code’s specific help as well as the relevant steps here.
Check whether one title or every title is affected
If other shows and movies play normally, Netflix recommends reporting the affected title rather than treating it as a general device failure. Open Viewing Activity, find the movie or episode, choose Report a Problem, and follow the prompts.

If every title is green, continue with the browser, app, graphics-driver, and display checks. If green corruption also appears in other video services, suspect the graphics driver, operating system, display, or computer more broadly.
Fix the Windows Netflix app
Update the app
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select More > Downloads and Updates.
- Select Download beside Netflix if an update is available, then retest. Netflix documents this route in its video troubleshooting guidance.
Reset the app
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Netflix, open its menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Reset, then reopen Netflix and sign in if prompted.
Resetting can sign you out and remove app-local data or settings. Netflix provides this reset path in its green-screen instructions. The current Netflix Windows app guidance also says Microsoft Edge must be installed; do not assume the app uses a completely separate playback stack: Netflix Windows requirements.
Test another supported browser
Try Netflix in a second supported browser. If it works there, the problem is more likely tied to the first browser’s settings, rendering, or protected-content components. If it fails in every browser, prioritize the graphics driver, operating system, and display path.
Netflix lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari among its supported browsers, with operating-system and version requirements. Its current tables list Windows 10 or 11 and minimum Windows browser versions of Edge 118+, Chrome 117+, Firefox 111+, and Opera 92+; check Netflix’s current requirements because these minimums can change. Maximum resolution also differs: Netflix’s Windows information lists Edge and Chrome as capable of Ultra HD when all requirements are met, while Firefox and Opera are listed up to Full HD. A browser that fixes the green picture may therefore change the available quality or HDR options. See Netflix’s Windows playback requirements.

Test browser graphics acceleration
Hardware or graphics acceleration can be involved in a faulty GPU-rendering path, but turning it off is not a universal fix. It may increase CPU use, reduce performance or quality, or make protected video fail. Change one setting at a time, fully quit and relaunch the browser, and restore the original setting if playback worsens.
Microsoft Edge
- Open
edge://settings/system. - Check Use graphics acceleration when available. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends that it be enabled for the normal hardware-accelerated path.
- Restart Edge and test Netflix. For diagnosis, open
edge://gpuand check whether Video Decode reports Hardware accelerated.
Microsoft notes that disabling acceleration can force software decoding, which may fail or play incorrectly if the needed software decoding path is unavailable: Edge video playback troubleshooting.
Firefox
- Open Settings and go to General.
- Under Performance, clear Use recommended performance settings.
- Clear Use hardware acceleration when available, then quit and relaunch Firefox.
Mozilla describes this as a troubleshooting option, not a universal recommendation, because behavior depends on the graphics driver and hardware: Mozilla’s graphics and acceleration guidance.
Chrome
Open Chrome Settings and search for graphics acceleration or hardware acceleration. Toggle the setting, relaunch Chrome, and retest. The wording and location can vary by version. Google’s video playback troubleshooting also points to browser settings, extensions, plugins, and cached data as possible media problems.

Update or reinstall the graphics driver
A graphics-driver update may correct a GPU or decoder compatibility problem, though it is not guaranteed to fix Netflix. Netflix recommends updating the video driver and, if that does not help or no update is available, uninstalling and reinstalling it: Netflix green-screen help.
- Identify the graphics hardware: Intel, AMD, NVIDIA, or a combination of integrated and dedicated graphics.
- Get the driver from your computer manufacturer or the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel. Laptop owners should check the computer maker’s package first, since it may be tailored to that model.
- Install the driver and restart the computer before testing Netflix.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback process rather than installing an unrelated driver.
Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities. If you use Edge and want more detail, Microsoft’s diagnostic guidance describes checking edge://gpu and edge://media-internals. In the latter, decoder names such as D3D11VideoDecoder or MediaFoundationVideoDecoder indicate hardware decoding; FFmpegVideoDecoder indicates software decoding. These are optional diagnostics, not required repair steps.
Repair Chrome protected-content playback
If Netflix is green only in Chrome, or Chrome shows a protected-content error such as M7701-1003 or M7702-1003, check protected content and Widevine. Do not disable DRM: Netflix needs protected-content playback enabled.
- In Chrome, open
chrome://settings/content/protectedContentand make sure protected content is permitted. - Open
chrome://components. - Find Widevine Content Decryption Module and select Check for update.
- Restart Chrome if Widevine reports that it updated, then test Netflix.
Netflix’s instructions for these errors are at M7701-1003 and M7702-1003. If you are using an unsupported Chromium-based browser, switch to one Netflix lists as supported.

Isolate an external monitor, TV, cable, or dock
If Netflix works on the computer’s built-in screen but turns green on a second monitor or TV, the display connection may be involved. A cable, converter, dock, or display can interfere with protected playback; a problem isolated to one monitor can point to copy-protection compatibility. Netflix’s display troubleshooting recommends checking direct connections, cables, inputs, and multiple displays.
- Disconnect additional monitors and test using only the primary display.
- Remove a dock, splitter, capture device, or HDMI converter from the chain.
- Connect the computer directly to the display with a supported HDMI, USB-C, Thunderbolt, or DisplayPort connection.
- Try another cable and display input; if possible, test another port or display.
- If the issue remains, temporarily turn HDR off, lower the refresh rate, and test Netflix in a window rather than fullscreen.
Netflix suggests a refresh rate of 120 Hz or lower for certain Windows distorted or glitchy playback cases. Treat that as a diagnostic test, not a general cure for every green screen: Netflix video troubleshooting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the problem appears only in 4K or HDR
If ordinary playback works but green video appears only with 4K or HDR, investigate the high-quality playback path rather than assuming every Netflix stream requires these components. Netflix’s listed Windows 4K requirements include a qualifying plan, playback quality set to Auto or High, at least 15 Mbps steady internet speed, Windows 11 with current updates, Edge, Chrome, or the Windows Netflix app, supported graphics hardware, a 4K 60-Hz screen, and an HDCP 2.2-compatible connection. Some Windows 11 systems may also need the HEVC Video Extension. The full conditions are on Netflix’s Windows requirements page.
With multiple displays connected, Netflix says each active display must meet the requirements for 4K playback. Microsoft explains that Edge relies on Windows media-decoding paths for H.264 and HEVC, and that an unavailable or invalid HEVC extension can prevent HEVC playback: Microsoft Edge video troubleshooting. These facts matter most when the fault is limited to 4K/HDR, an external screen, or a particular high-quality mode; they do not establish that HEVC, HDR, or HDCP causes every green screen. Do not install random codec packs.

Mac, Chromebook, and other devices
On a Mac or Chromebook, update the operating system and browser, restart, and test another supported browser where available. Remove external-display accessories and test a direct connection if the problem is limited to a monitor or TV. Netflix’s supported-device and browser table lists macOS 10.15.5 or later and ChromeOS 76 or later among its requirements, alongside other platform details: Netflix supported browsers and devices.
Netflix’s current browser table also notes that Linux compatibility is not guaranteed and does not have the same troubleshooting support. Check the linked requirements for your particular system rather than assuming that browser support or maximum resolution is identical across platforms.
If Netflix is still green
- Only one title fails: report it through Viewing Activity.
- Only one browser fails: keep the working browser as a temporary workaround, then investigate that browser’s acceleration, updates, and protected-content components. Check whether its resolution or HDR capability differs before treating the change as permanent.
- Only an external display fails: test the computer’s built-in screen, a direct connection, another cable, and another display. If the fault follows one monitor or adapter, contact that manufacturer.
- Every browser and video service fails: focus on the computer’s graphics driver, operating system, or hardware and contact the computer or GPU manufacturer.
- It fails across titles and devices: try another playback device, such as a TV’s built-in Netflix app. If the issue persists beyond one computer or display chain, contact Netflix support.
Most troubleshooting steps above are free. Consider replacing a cable, adapter, dock, or display only if direct-connection tests isolate it as the problem. The HEVC extension is relevant only to some compatible Windows 4K/HDR cases, not routine HD playback.
