Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power opens with “Elven Kings Under the Sky”—not “The Fellowship of Lindon,” which is the framing of this recap. Prime Video’s official synopsis points to three threads: Sauron bargains with Adar, the Stranger and Nori venture into new lands, and the Three Elven Rings face judgment. The episode debuted August 29, 2024, and runs 1 hour 16 minutes, according to Prime Video’s episode listing.

What happens in “Elven Kings Under the Sky”?

Prime Video’s published synopsis identifies three central storylines, but does not lay out their scene order or provide the terms of the bargain. It establishes the episode’s focus without supporting a detailed, chronological beat-by-beat recap.

  • Sauron and Adar: Sauron bargains with Adar. The official synopsis does not say what they agree to.
  • The Stranger and Nori: The pair venture into new lands. The listing does not describe their route or what they encounter there.
  • The Three Elven Rings: The Rings face judgment, putting the consequences of their creation under scrutiny.

These are the episode’s confirmed story strands; more specific scene details are not established by the official synopsis.

Why are the Three Rings under judgment?

The question follows directly from Season 1. In Amazon’s Season 1 recap, Halbrand is revealed as Sauron, and Galadriel learns who he is. Before that revelation, Halbrand had planted the idea of making Rings with the Elven leaders in Lindon. Celebrimbor then forged the Three Elven Rings using mithril.

Season 2’s scrutiny of the Three therefore arrives in the shadow of Sauron’s deception: the Rings were made after he influenced the Elves, and Galadriel knows his identity. The episode listing confirms that the Three face judgment, but does not specify who judges them or what verdict follows.

How the premiere sets up Season 2

Amazon frames the season around Sauron’s deception and the creation of additional Rings. Its explainer says Sauron adopts the persona Annatar, “the Lord of Gifts,” offering the Elves help and knowledge as he manipulates them into making more Rings. That is Amazon’s account of the series’ story, rather than a claim about Tolkien’s texts.

Co-showrunner Patrick McKay described the season’s wider conflict this way: “And what is going to be happening over the course of Season 2 is, every single one of these societies and heroes that we set up in Season 1, are now facing serious cracks in the foundation that Sauron can exploit.” This is a statement about the season’s premise, not dialogue from the premiere or a comment specifically about this episode.

The premiere’s three synopsis threads reflect that broader setup: Sauron is negotiating, the Stranger and Nori are moving beyond familiar territory, and the Elves must confront the status of their Rings. Amazon identifies Lindon, Eregion, Khazad-dûm, Númenor, and surrounding lands as realms whose safety is at stake in Season 2.

Where does the series fit in Tolkien’s timeline?

Amazon places The Rings of Power in the Second Age, before the events of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings saga. The show’s setting is therefore earlier than the later trilogy’s story, even as it builds toward the history associated with the Rings. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings books offer background to the wider source world, but cover later events rather than this episode’s Second Age setting.
