Investigations by Maldita.es found a growing-looking but unmeasured pattern on Instagram and Facebook: synthetic people presented as healers, doctors or kindly health advisers, making dramatic claims about serious illnesses and directing audiences toward supplements, books and paid guides. The documented accounts attracted enormous audiences, but the samples do not show what share of all Meta Reels uses AI or spreads health misinformation.
What the investigations actually found
Instagram: 25 verified-looking personas and hundreds of millions of views
In a July 2026 investigation, Maldita.es examined 25 Instagram profiles carrying Meta Verified badges. The profiles presented AI-generated people as health authorities and promoted supplements on Amazon or ebooks about holistic cures. Together, the selected accounts had more than 5 million subscribers and over 389 million video views. Those totals describe the investigated group, not Instagram as a whole.
Facebook: a large sample with a substantial AI-doctor segment
For a September 2026 report, Maldita.es reviewed 232 Facebook profiles and pages publishing health advice. The pages had more than 81.5 million combined followers, and 36.2% published videos in which AI-generated characters posed as doctors. The data were collected from August 24 to 28, 2026. The report says its sample does not represent every profile of this kind.
How the miracle-cure pitch works
A fictional healer speaks with medical confidence
One Instagram example was “Baba Matryona,” a synthetic Siberian healer. In a Reel, the character claimed to have a “natural, science-backed way” to reverse high blood pressure and urged viewers to comment the words “blood pressure.” The statement came from a fictional AI persona, not a qualified clinician, and is not evidence that any treatment works.

Serious diseases become simple-content hooks
The Facebook investigation documented unsupported claims about curing cancer, dementia and diabetes, including the claim that fruit could “starve” cancer. A short video can make a complex disease look solvable with one food, powder or secret routine, while omitting diagnosis, contraindications, clinical evidence and the need for professional care.
Why a blue check or AI label is not medical validation
Verification identifies an account signal, not expertise
A Meta Verified badge can make a persona appear established, but it does not establish that the speaker is real, medically qualified or correct. The Instagram investigation specifically found AI personas among accounts with the badge.

Meta’s stated AI-labeling approach
Meta Vice President of Content Policy Monika Bickert said, “We agree that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address this content.” Meta says it may apply an AI-information label when it detects industry-standard indicators or when a user discloses that content was AI-generated. Under that approach, AI content can remain on the platform with a label unless it violates another policy. This is Meta’s policy explanation, not an independent assessment of how consistently labels appeared on the investigated videos.
Visible clues can be easy to miss
Maldita.es reported signs such as impossible-looking figures, blurred backgrounds, unintelligible text and visible watermarks in some Facebook videos. Such clues can help viewers question a clip, but a polished video without obvious artifacts is not proof that its medical claim is genuine.

Product links and affiliate paths
The investigations traced some Instagram profiles to Amazon storefronts and reported Amazon Associates tags on certain links. Baba Matryona’s profile, for example, linked to a hydration and wellness powder. The product listing stated that the powder was not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. Maldita.es reported that Amazon told the outlet it had opened an investigation.
Guides, books, supplements and data collection
Facebook accounts and linked sites also promoted supplements, books and health guides. Some external pages requested phone numbers and disclosed paid SMS charges in small print. These findings document commercial routes associated with some accounts; they do not show that every account is monetized or that affiliate income is the only motive.

What “filling up” can—and cannot—mean
The reported numbers demonstrate reach within selected samples, not a platform-wide prevalence rate. No representative statistic establishes what percentage of Meta Reels are AI-generated health content or how quickly that percentage is changing. Meta separately reported that views and time spent watching original Facebook Reels approximately doubled in the second half of 2025 compared with the same period in 2024. It also said it removed more than 20 million accounts impersonating large creators during 2025. Those figures concern original-content performance and impersonation enforcement, not the prevalence or accuracy of AI health videos.
How to assess a Reel before acting on it
- Identify the speaker. Look for a verifiable real person, professional registration and a source outside the social profile. A character, voice clone or vague biography is not medical authority.
- Separate the claim from the presentation. A lab coat, traditional costume, accent, emotional story or “science-backed” wording does not substitute for clinical evidence.
- Check for a cure promise. Claims to reverse cancer, diabetes, dementia or high blood pressure with one food, supplement or secret method are warning signs.
- Follow the commercial trail cautiously. Amazon links, affiliate tags, paid guides, books and supplement checkouts indicate a sales path, not proof of efficacy.
- Do not replace treatment. For symptoms or a diagnosed condition, consult a licensed clinician and use established medical sources rather than acting on a Reel.
- Report deceptive content. Use Meta’s in-app reporting tools for misleading health claims, impersonation or scams, and avoid commenting or sharing in ways that increase its reach.
The enforcement gap viewers should understand
Five separate questions are often collapsed into one. Whether a video is AI-generated, whether an account identity is verified, whether the recommendation system surfaces it, whether a health claim violates policy, and whether a linked seller acts lawfully are different issues. An AI label may disclose how media was made without judging its medical accuracy. A verification badge may address account identity without confirming qualifications. A platform can remove impersonators while misleading health promotions remain visible, and a product disclaimer can coexist with aggressive cure language in a Reel.

That distinction explains why the investigations matter: they show synthetic authority, high reach and commercial links appearing together, while the available evidence does not measure how common the pattern is across all Meta content.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI doctor on Instagram or Facebook really cure a disease?
The investigated videos provide no reliable basis for cure claims. An AI-generated character is not a medical professional, and claims about curing cancer, dementia, diabetes or high blood pressure should not replace diagnosis or treatment.
Does a Meta Verified badge mean the health advice is trustworthy?
No. The badge is an account-level signal. Maldita.es reported finding AI health personas among Instagram accounts with Meta Verified badges; verification does not establish medical training or truthful claims.
How widespread are AI faith-healer Reels?
The available investigations do not provide a representative platform-wide percentage. Their follower, subscriber and view totals come from defined samples of Instagram and Facebook accounts.

AI healer Reels can look personal, authoritative and compassionate while leading to unsupported medical claims and a sale. Treat the persona, the badge and the label as signals to investigate—not as evidence that a miracle cure is real.
