Google’s NotebookLM generated a podcast-style conversation from a document containing only the words “fart” and “poop,” repeated 1,000 times. Reported by Wired on October 2, 2024, and Axios on October 4, the stunt showed how convincingly Audio Overviews can imitate a conversational format even when the source material is deliberately meaningless.
What happened in the NotebookLM experiment?
A user supplied NotebookLM with an intentionally trivial text file: the words “fart” and “poop” repeated 1,000 times. NotebookLM’s Audio Overviews then transformed that source into an exchange between two synthetic hosts, presented in the style of a podcast discussion.
The original creator is not identified in the cited reporting. The experiment was a user test of the feature’s limits, not a project Google announced or commissioned.
How NotebookLM could make a podcast from two repeated words
Google introduced NotebookLM in July 2023 as an AI notebook designed to work from documents supplied by the user. It can summarize, explain, answer questions and brainstorm using those sources as its reference material.

Google released Audio Overviews in September 2024. The feature synthesizes uploaded material into a podcast-style conversation between two AI hosts. In this case, the system had almost no semantic material to work with, but it still produced the recognizable structure of a discussion: alternating speakers, reactions and transitions that sounded conversational.
That distinction matters. The dialogue was an AI interpretation of the input, not proof that the document contained a coherent subject or that the hosts understood the words in a human sense.

What the stunt actually demonstrates
Fluent form can exist without meaningful content
The output was memorable because the source was so empty. NotebookLM supplied the genre conventions of a podcast—turn-taking, commentary and an apparently organized exchange—despite receiving no substantive argument, narrative or factual subject.
In other words, the system demonstrated synthesis and genre imitation. It did not discover a hidden lesson in the repeated words, and the result does not establish consciousness, intention or human-like understanding.

Source grounding is not the same as source quality
NotebookLM is designed to stay grounded in material a user provides. That can make its answers useful when the documents are reliable and informative. The experiment exposes the other side of source grounding: a system can remain tied to a source while still producing an elaborate-sounding response from poor or nonsensical input.
Why the “fart” and “poop” podcast went viral
The experiment appeared during NotebookLM’s broader viral moment in 2024, when users circulated unexpectedly natural AI conversations and tried deliberately strange, tiny or repetitive documents. The contrast between trivial input and confident output made this example especially easy to share.

Raiza Martin, who leads the NotebookLM team inside Google Labs, described the appeal to Wired in 2024: “The magic of the tool is that people get to listen to something that they ordinarily would not be able to just find on YouTube or an existing podcast.”
That comment helps explain the feature’s attraction, but it should not be read as a claim that every generated conversation contains original reporting or reliable analysis. Audio Overviews can make supplied material easier to consume; they cannot make an empty source informative.

Can NotebookLM make a podcast from any text?
Audio Overviews is intended to synthesize documents uploaded to NotebookLM, so a wide range of text can serve as an input. The result will still depend on the source: detailed material can provide more substance, while repetitive, contradictory or inaccurate text can lead to a polished but shallow or misleading conversation.
The experiment should therefore be treated as a demonstration of format generation, not a guarantee that NotebookLM can turn arbitrary writing into a worthwhile finished podcast. Listeners should check the original documents whenever accuracy, context or attribution matters.
Is the generated conversation based on meaningful information?
No. In this case, the input consisted of two words repeated 1,000 times, so there was no meaningful topic to explain. The apparent richness came from the model’s ability to organize and perform a podcast-like exchange around minimal material.
That is the central lesson of the stunt: natural-sounding audio can signal successful presentation without signaling successful reasoning. NotebookLM’s output may be fluent, but fluency alone does not validate the source or the conclusions implied by the conversation.
