Not yet. Ashton Kutcher’s 2024 comments described a possible future in which a person supplies an idea, an AI writes the script and a video model generates the film. His experience with OpenAI’s Sora beta demonstrated impressive short clips, not a proven system for producing a coherent feature movie from one prompt.
What Ashton Kutcher actually predicted
In a 2024 conversation with former Google executive Eric Schmidt, Kutcher described a complete, user-directed movie pipeline:
- Develop a movie idea.
- Have AI write the screenplay.
- Feed that screenplay into a video generator.
- Watch a personalized movie created for you.
“Instead of watching some movie that somebody else came up with, I can just generate and then watch my own movie,” Kutcher said. He also predicted a world with more generated content than people have time to watch.
That was a forecast based on his Sora beta experience, not a demonstration that consumers could already make feature-length films.

What Sora could do in the 2024 discussion
Kutcher said he could generate realistic clips lasting roughly 10 to 15 seconds. He compared an AI-generated television establishing shot costing about $100 with conventional shooting that could cost thousands. That figure was his reported estimate, not an independently measured production-cost study.
“You can generate any footage that you want [with AI]. You can create good 10-, 15-second videos that look very real.”
He also identified the limitations that made a full movie impractical at the time:
- Errors in physical behavior and cause-and-effect.
- “Bobbling” or visual instability.
- Difficulty maintaining consistency across generated material.
- A large gap between a convincing shot and a sustained story with dependable characters, locations, editing and sound.
“It still makes mistakes. It still doesn’t quite understand physics. It still has some bobbling.”

Those problems become more consequential when a sequence must preserve the same actor, costume, prop, lighting, geography and emotional continuity over many scenes.
Can you type a prompt and get an entire movie?
A prompt can produce a short AI-video clip. It does not, on the evidence described in 2024, reliably produce a finished feature with a stable cast, intentional scene progression, usable dialogue, synchronized sound and an edit that works from beginning to end.
A screenplay is also not a complete production plan. A movie requires decisions about performance, camera placement, pacing, continuity, music, sound effects, visual effects, revisions and legal permissions. A system that generates one attractive shot may still fail when asked to remember hundreds of earlier creative decisions.
Kutcher’s sequence is therefore best understood as an aspiration: language models could handle story development while video models handle images. The missing step was dependable long-form control.

Which AI video tools fit that idea?
The tools discussed publicly at the time occupied different parts of the proposed workflow. Sora represented short-form visual generation in Kutcher’s account. LTX Studio, introduced at a March 27, 2024 launch event, was positioned more immediately as a browser-based workspace for smaller projects and pre-production.
| Capability | Sora as described by Kutcher | LTX Studio as reported at launch |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Generate realistic short video clips | Plan and develop projects before or alongside production |
| Output length | About 10–15 seconds in Kutcher’s examples | Not stated |
| Character and scene consistency | Not established; consistency problems remained | Character and scene controls were presented, but long-form reliability was not established |
| Story and editing control | Not stated as a complete editing workflow | Storyboards and scene planning |
| Audio | Not stated | Audio support was among the reported controls |
| Cost and access | Beta experience; consumer pricing and broad access were not established in these reports | Availability and pricing were subject to change |
| Rights and likeness safeguards | Not stated | Specific safeguards were not established in the launch description |
LTX Studio’s significance was not that it had already automated filmmaking. It showed a nearer-term workflow in which creators could organize characters, scenes, storyboards and audio in one interface, reducing planning friction without eliminating production decisions.
Will AI replace film crews?
AI could reduce the cost or time of some tasks, including concept art, storyboarding, background shots and certain pre-visualization work. Kutcher’s establishing-shot comparison points to that possibility, but it does not show that an entire crew can be removed from a production.
Film labor questions were already being negotiated. After the 2023 strikes, agreements involving SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America included protections addressing AI. Those provisions reflect practical disputes over performers’ likenesses, writers’ work, consent, compensation and control—not proof that AI has replaced those professions.

The likely near-term change was a shift in which tasks people perform and supervise. Someone still has to define the brief, approve results, correct continuity, direct performances, clear rights and assemble a story that audiences want to watch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What would have to improve before Kutcher’s scenario works?
Long-range continuity
The system would need to preserve identities, props, locations, lighting and spatial relationships across an entire script.
Reliable physical behavior
Characters and objects would need to move, collide and interact consistently rather than merely look plausible for a few seconds.
Directable performances
Creators would need repeatable control over acting, blocking, camera movement, timing and revisions.
Best Value
Integrated sound and editing
Dialogue, ambience, music and effects would need to stay synchronized with a coherent cut.
Rights, consent and provenance
Any production using a recognizable person, voice, script or protected asset would need clear authorization and an accountable record of what was generated and by whom.
How to read the “soon” claim
No authoritative timetable established when these comments would become reality. “Soon” should not be treated as a product announcement or a verified prediction. The defensible conclusion is narrower: AI video was improving rapidly, short clips could look convincing, and software was beginning to connect generation with planning tools. A one-prompt feature-film pipeline remained unproven.
