Verdict: The MECOOL KM7 Plus remains useful when you specifically need Ethernet, two USB-A ports, microSD expansion, optical audio, analog AV, and certified Netflix and Prime Video access in one Google TV box. At MECOOL’s listed US price of $125.99, however, its 2GB, older Amlogic platform and lack of Dolby Vision make newer devices better choices for most buyers.
What the MECOOL KM7 Plus is
The KM7 Plus is a compact set-top box for 4K televisions, not a stick or dongle. It runs Google TV, the content-discovery interface built on Android TV, with Google Play app installation, Google Assistant voice search, Chromecast built-in and Google-account integration. Netflix and Prime Video certification separates it from many generic Android boxes that may not offer legitimate high-resolution streaming.
Google TV does not include subscriptions. Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and other services still require separate accounts and payments. MECOOL’s 2022 claim that this was the “first 4K streaming box running Google TV” is a launch-era marketing statement, not a meaningful advantage today; see the historical comparison at MECOOL’s comparison.

MECOOL’s product page contains a serious specification inconsistency: its main description identifies the S905Y4 and Android 11, while an FAQ mentions an Allwinner H616 and Android 10. Independent coverage supports the Amlogic/Android 11 configuration. Verify the model and installed firmware on the actual box rather than relying on that FAQ: MECOOL’s product page.

Design, remote and connectivity
The plastic box has a front status indicator and a supplied voice remote. HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio, AV and power are on the rear; the side carries two USB-A ports and a microSD slot. MECOOL supplies an HDMI cable, power adapter and manual, although charger plug specifications vary by country. The regional listing at MECOOL TV warns buyers to select the correct plug.
This layout is substantially more flexible than a typical dongle. Ethernet helps in congested Wi-Fi environments; USB supports storage, keyboards and controllers; microSD expands media capacity; optical connects older soundbars and receivers; and analog AV can serve legacy equipment. Those ports are valuable only if you will use them—ordinary Netflix and YouTube viewers may get better value from a smaller current streamer.
Google TV setup and everyday use
- Connect HDMI to the television and attach the supplied power adapter.
- Pair the remote when prompted.
- Choose Wi-Fi or connect Ethernet.
- Sign in to a Google account and select or install streaming apps.
- Open Settings → System → About → Update and check firmware.
- Confirm display resolution and HDR options, then test Assistant, Chromecast and HDMI-CEC.
The interface provides aggregated recommendations, Google Play access and casting from compatible mobile apps. It is familiar Google TV rather than a separate MECOOL ecosystem. Menus and app behavior can change with Google and service updates.
Streaming, picture quality and HDR
Netflix certification is the KM7 Plus’s most important software credential: it is materially safer than buying a generic box that merely advertises 4K. MECOOL also lists Prime Video certification. Nevertheless, certification does not promise that every title reaches 4K, that every subscription tier enables it, or that HDR and surround audio behave identically across countries, apps and firmware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe S905Y4 can decode AV1, and the box outputs up to 4K/60. HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG are reported, but Dolby Vision is not supported. A television, HDMI chain, app and title must all support the same format before it appears on screen. Local files can behave differently from protected streaming content.

Published hands-on reviews found issues worth treating as unit- and setup-dependent rather than universal defects. The Gadgeteer reported a yellowish cast that required television adjustment, while 9to5Google described flashing or artifacts in Prime Video HDR: The Gadgeteer review and 9to5Google’s review. If picture quality matters, test SDR, HDR10 and HDR10+ in each major app, check automatic TV picture-mode switching, and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet.
Audio and home-theater compatibility
HDMI carries audio, and optical output is useful with older equipment. Dolby Atmos is advertised and reported, but “Atmos support” can mean different things: an app may provide Atmos metadata, the box may decode or pass it through, and the receiver must accept the resulting format. Do not assume universal Atmos passthrough. Dolby Vision is absent, and lossless local formats such as TrueHD or DTS-HD should be considered unverified unless your exact player, firmware and receiver combination proves otherwise.
One 9to5Google test found a power/HDMI-CEC problem with a Hisense television that required a restart; it did not occur on every TV. If CEC misbehaves, try another HDMI cable or input, toggle CEC off and on, update both devices, and test the box remote independently.
Performance, storage and local media
The S905Y4 and 2GB of RAM are adequate for mainstream streaming, Google TV navigation, casting, light games and ordinary local playback. They are less convincing for demanding games, heavy multitasking, large app collections or long-term headroom. 9to5Google’s favorable 2023 performance assessment should be read as a dated observation, not a current benchmark.
Sixteen gigabytes is more usable than many older 8GB dongles, but Android and preinstalled apps consume part of it. USB drives and microSD cards make the KM7 Plus a practical basic local-media player, and Ethernet can improve network playback. A media-player app from Google Play still determines which containers, subtitles, refresh rates and audio tracks play correctly; no box should be assumed to direct-play every Blu-ray remux.

Android 14 update: what to check
MECOOL published Android 14 firmware C3.0.4_20250626. Listed changes include APK updates, a Disney+ button fix for North Africa, Russian translation updates, and remote volume/mute fixes. To check, use Settings → System → About → Update and record the original version first: MECOOL’s update instructions.
- Use a stable connection; Ethernet is preferable if convenient.
- Do not interrupt power during installation.
- Confirm the model is KM7 Plus, not KM7, KM2 Plus or another MECOOL box.
- Do not flash unofficial files unless model compatibility is certain.
- If no update appears, restart, verify networking, recheck the update menu and contact MECOOL before manual flashing.
Android 14 modernizes the software version but does not add Dolby Vision, extra RAM or the performance of a new-generation streamer.

Security and reliability cautions
The Gadgeteer review and its update included a malware warning. That report should not be generalized into a claim that every KM7 Plus is infected. Update through official channels, avoid unofficial APK stores and firmware packages, and do not sideload pirated streaming applications. A factory reset after a major update is an option when troubleshooting, but back up settings first.
How it compares with newer choices
| Device | Why choose it | What the KM7 Plus still does better |
|---|---|---|
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | Google lists $99.99, 4GB RAM, 32GB storage, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and Ethernet. | Two USB ports, microSD, optical audio and analog AV |
| onn 4K Pro Streaming Device | US-focused newer model listings include 32GB, 3GB RAM, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and Ethernet; price and stock vary. | MECOOL’s particular port combination and broader international availability may suit some buyers |
| Roku Streamer Plus or Roku Ultra | Simple interface and mainstream app support. | Google Play, Chromecast and Android-based local-media flexibility |
| Apple TV 4K | Premium performance, ecosystem integration and long support outlook. | Lower-cost Google TV experience, Android apps and expandable ports |
Who should buy the KM7 Plus?
Buy it when
- You need Ethernet, optical audio, USB storage and microSD in one certified Google TV box.
- You rely on an older receiver, soundbar or analog display.
- You want legitimate Netflix and Prime Video support rather than a generic Android box.
- You find it heavily discounted—roughly under $60 is where its ports can make the proposition attractive.
Skip it when
- Dolby Vision, the newest hardware or long-term mainstream support is important.
- You mainly watch common streaming apps and do not need expansion ports.
- The price is near MECOOL’s $125.99 US listing; around $100–$126, newer alternatives are generally better value.
- You expect every HDR format and immersive-audio mode to work identically in every app.
At approximately $60–$90, compare carefully with the Google TV Streamer and current onn models. Above the official price, the KM7 Plus is not a sensible ordinary-streaming purchase.
The Bottom Line
The MECOOL KM7 Plus is a specialized, well-connected Google TV box—not a new performance leader. Buy it at a substantial discount when its Ethernet, USB, microSD, optical and AV ports solve a real setup problem; otherwise choose a newer mainstream streamer with more memory, Dolby Vision and a stronger support outlook.
