To watch a subscriber-only Twitch VOD, sign in to the Twitch account that has an active subscription to that channel, open the streamer’s Videos tab, and select the past broadcast. If Twitch still shows a lock, the account does not currently have the required entitlement or the purchase has not finished processing. There is no legitimate viewer-side method to unlock the full recording without access.
What a subscriber-only Twitch VOD is
A VOD (video on demand) is a saved recording of a previous Twitch livestream, also called a Past Broadcast. Twitch lets eligible creators restrict those archives to channel subscribers when subscriber-only archives are enabled. The creator must also have past-broadcast storage enabled for a livestream to be saved at all. See Twitch’s VOD documentation and archive-setting documentation.
Do not confuse different restrictions:
- Subscriber-only live chat: only qualifying subscribers can send messages while the stream is live.
- Subscriber-only live stream: the live broadcast itself is restricted.
- Subscriber-only VOD: a saved past broadcast requires the channel’s current subscription entitlement.
- Clips: clips have separate settings and are not automatically equivalent to access to the complete VOD.
Who can normally watch the archive?
Access is tied to the Twitch account currently viewing the video. The qualifying subscription may be:
- A current paid subscription to that channel.
- A gifted subscription that is still active on that account.
- An eligible Prime channel subscription that has been applied to that channel, where Prime subscriptions are available.
- A subscription whose renewal was canceled but whose already-paid billing period has not ended.
Twitch distinguishes current subscription entitlement from subscription history. A follower, former subscriber, or viewer with a long resubscription streak does not automatically have access. A moderator badge is not a universal substitute for a subscription. Twitch’s subscription history and badge information is described at this support page.

How to watch a subscriber-only VOD
Desktop or mobile browser
- Go to Twitch and sign in.
- Open the account menu and confirm that the username is the one that holds the subscription.
- Visit the streamer’s channel.
- Choose the Videos tab (Twitch may use slightly different labels after an interface update).
- Select the relevant past broadcast.
- If the video is locked, choose the subscription option Twitch displays.
- Complete the paid subscription, apply an available Prime subscription, or accept a qualifying gift.
- Return to the VOD, refresh the page, or reopen it.
Subscription prices, tiers, payment methods, and renewal terms vary by country, platform, channel, and account. Twitch shows the applicable terms at checkout; its purchase support is at https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/purchase-support-faq?language=en_US. Some Tier 2 and Tier 3 purchases may require the website rather than the mobile app.
Twitch mobile app
- Sign in to the account that should have access.
- Open the channel and find its videos or past broadcasts.
- Open the locked recording and follow the subscription prompt.
If the app does not show a subscription control or the video remains locked, try Twitch in a mobile or desktop browser. The creator-side setting for subscriber-only archives is a separate issue: Twitch’s documentation says creators configure that setting on a computer, not in the mobile app.

What happens if you cancel a subscription?
Canceling recurring renewal normally stops the next charge but does not end the current paid period immediately. Subscriber benefits, including access that depends on an active subscription, normally remain available until that period expires. Twitch describes this behavior in its purchase FAQ.
That is not an indefinite promise. A refund, reversed charge, failed payment, fraud review, account suspension, or platform error can affect entitlement. A historical badge or subscription streak also does not prove that the subscription is active today.

I paid, but the VOD is still locked
Work through these checks in order:
- Verify the account: sign out if necessary and sign back in to the username that made the purchase or received the gift.
- Check current subscriptions: open Twitch’s subscriptions page and confirm that the channel appears under current subscriptions, not only expired history.
- Allow for processing: a recent payment can take time to become active with some payment methods. Reload after a short wait. If the purchase never activates, use Twitch support.
- Refresh authentication: sign out and back in, then reopen the VOD.
- Test a clean session: use a private/incognito window and disable extensions that interfere with cookies, login, playback, or content blocking.
- Reset the client: clear Twitch site data, update the app, or fully restart it.
- Try another environment: use a different supported browser or device to separate a local playback problem from an entitlement problem.
- Check availability: the recording may have expired, been deleted, or never been saved as a past broadcast.
- Contact Twitch: include your Twitch username, the channel name, a screenshot of the lock, and the invoice or order ID. Twitch’s purchase support explains what information may be required: https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/purchase-support-faq?language=en_US.
Browser troubleshooting cannot create an entitlement. If the channel is absent from your current subscriptions, you must restore or obtain a qualifying subscription before the full archive can play.
Can a non-subscriber watch a clip?
Sometimes. Twitch says a clip made by a subscriber from a subscriber-only archive can be viewable by anyone, even a non-subscriber, subject to the channel’s clip settings. See Twitch’s archive FAQ and clip settings documentation.

A clip is only a short excerpt, not the complete VOD. Clips can be disabled, deleted, or unavailable, and a public clip does not provide a way to reconstruct or obtain the protected recording.

These are policy limits, not guarantees that every recording remains available for the entire period. A streamer can delete a VOD, fail to save the broadcast, or change its visibility. Twitch can also change retention rules. The source for the current figures and storage requirements is Twitch’s VOD support page.
If your subscription has expired, resubscribe to the channel if you want to check remaining subscriber-only content. Twitch’s subscriptions page includes current and expired subscriptions, so it can help identify a former channel subscription.
Legitimate alternatives when you cannot subscribe
- Ask whether the streamer has uploaded the recording to an official YouTube channel or another authorized platform.
- Look for public clips or highlights, understanding that they will be incomplete.
- Receive a gifted subscription from another viewer.
- Use an eligible Prime channel subscription if it is available in your region and has not already been used elsewhere.
- Ask the streamer whether they can temporarily make the archive public or provide an authorized viewing link.
Downloading and “unlocker” sites
Twitch’s VOD documentation describes download and export tools for creators in Video Producer. It does not establish a general viewer right to download a subscriber-only archive. A creator may download or repost their own recording; viewers should use an authorized copy supplied by that creator.
Avoid websites or browser tools that promise to unlock a VOD, request your Twitch password or session token, scrape protected playback URLs, evade a subscription with a VPN, or sell shared accounts. They can expose you to credential theft or malware and may violate Twitch rules, the streamer’s terms, or copyright law. Re-uploading or redistributing a recording without permission can create the same problems.

Common misconceptions
- Following is not subscribing: followers generally do not receive subscriber-only VOD access.
- Twitch Turbo is not a channel subscription: Turbo may affect retention for some broadcaster categories but does not automatically unlock every subscriber-only archive.
- A public channel is not a public library: individual videos can have different visibility settings.
- Canceling renewal is not immediate cancellation: access normally continues through the paid period, subject to account and payment issues.
- A VOD link cannot override permissions: the URL alone does not grant access.
