What Sky Go error code 50-2 means
Sky does not appear to publish a current UK help page that gives error 50-2 a definitive meaning. Sky Community reports nevertheless show a recurring pattern: the message appears when Sky Go cannot validate the device’s location or network, often alongside a “device needs to be authorised” message.
A VPN is not the only possibility. The same failure can result from a proxy, private DNS, ad-blocking DNS, corporate or hotel network, security software with an integrated VPN, an outdated app, damaged app data, a temporary Sky service fault or an account-authorisation problem. It is not safe to assume that 50-2 means you have exceeded your device limit.
Community users have repeatedly reported that disabling a VPN resolved 50-2 or the related authorisation message. Those are user reports rather than an official Sky definition, so treat VPN and location checking as the first diagnostic, not a guaranteed explanation. Quickest fix: remove VPN and privacy-routing interference
- Disconnect every VPN. Check your normal VPN app and any VPN profile installed by Norton, antivirus, parental-control or security software.
- Check proxies and private DNS. Browser VPN extensions, manually configured proxies, DNS filters and “secure browsing” network protection can alter the address Sky sees even when a conventional VPN appears disconnected.
- Disable Apple Private Relay temporarily. On Apple devices, Private Relay can change the apparent network route.
- Leave managed networks. Work, school, hotel and public Wi-Fi may use a proxy or location that Sky Go cannot validate. Use a trusted home connection or phone hotspot for the test.
- Force-close Sky Go, then reopen it. Do this after the network changes so the app creates a fresh connection.
Do not buy a VPN to solve this error. Sky’s current UK guidance says streamed Sky Go content is not available outside the UK, and a VPN can produce the same location-validation problem you are trying to fix.
Fix error 50-2 on iPhone or iPad
- Open the device’s VPN settings and disconnect the VPN. Inspect security apps for a separate VPN or network-filter switch.
- If enabled, turn off iCloud Private Relay temporarily.
- Open Settings → Sky Go → Location. As a community-reported test, switch Precise Location off. This is not an official Sky requirement; restore it if it makes no difference or affects another app.
- Swipe up to open the app switcher and force-close Sky Go.
- Reopen Sky Go and retry the same programme.
- If it still fails, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or use a different trusted Wi-Fi network. Then restart the iPhone or iPad and install any pending Sky Go or iOS/iPadOS updates.
Sky Community users have specifically linked 50-2 on Apple devices with VPN use and, in some cases, the Precise Location setting. These reports are useful troubleshooting leads, not a published error-code definition.

Fix error 50-2 on Android
- Disable VPN, proxy, private DNS and any security-app network protection. Android menu names differ by manufacturer and release.
- Open the recent-apps view, dismiss Sky Go, then open it again.
- Try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. If that works, restart the router and test a different Wi-Fi network or phone hotspot.
- Restart the Android device.
- Update Sky Go in Google Play and install available Android updates.
- If your phone provides the option, use Settings → Apps → Sky Go → Storage → Clear cache. Do not choose “Clear data” unless you accept being signed out and losing locally stored settings or downloads.
- Reinstall Sky Go only after these checks fail.
Fix error 50-2 on Mac or Windows
- Quit Sky Go completely; closing the window may leave the app running.
- Disable VPN and proxy software, including antivirus web-protection or network-filter features.
- Restart the computer and reopen Sky Go.
- Install pending Sky Go and operating-system updates.
- Test a phone hotspot or another trusted network. A different result points to the original network rather than a broken account.
- If the error continues, reinstall the desktop app from Sky’s official route. Check the live supported-platform information at Sky’s Sky Go app requirements page; support can change, and the page currently lists Windows 10/11 and macOS 11 or later.
Use the Wi-Fi-versus-mobile test to narrow the cause

Sky’s generic technical guidance also recommends closing and restarting the app and trying another connection, such as mobile data: Sky’s troubleshooting guidance.
Check whether Sky is having an outage
Before deleting the app or changing account settings, check the Sky TV-app service-status page. If Sky Go fails on more than one device or other customers are reporting the same issue, a Sky-side incident may need to be resolved by Sky. Waiting for service recovery is safer than repeatedly removing devices or resetting passwords.

If Sky Go says your device needs to be authorised
“Device needs to be authorised” is an account or app-validation message, not proof that error 50-2 always means too many devices. Reinstalling can trigger a fresh authorisation check, while a blocked VPN can prevent that check from completing.
- Sign out of Sky Go if the app allows it.
- Sign back in with the Sky iD linked to your subscription.
- Open Sky’s device-management area and inspect registered devices.
- Remove an obsolete device only if the account has genuinely reached its registration limit.
- Authorise the current device again and retry playback.
- If authorisation still fails, contact Sky with the exact message and code.
Sky says standard Sky Go access supports two compatible devices; Sky Go Extra can allow more registrations and two simultaneous streams, depending on the subscription. Check the current terms at Sky’s Sky Go information page and Sky Go Extra details. Registered-device limits and simultaneous-stream limits are different.

Are you trying to use Sky Go abroad?
For UK customers, Sky’s current travel guidance says streamed Sky Go content is not entitled to work outside the UK, including while travelling in the EU. Eligible programmes downloaded in the UK may be available offline. Read the current rules at Sky’s viewing-content-abroad guidance.
Do not use a VPN as a workaround for geographic restrictions. It can violate the service rules and is also a likely reason for 50-2. Sky markets and subscription entitlements differ between the UK, Ireland and other territories, so use the guidance for your account’s country.

Reinstall Sky Go only as a later step
Reinstallation can repair damaged app files, but it will not remove an active VPN or network filter. One Sky Community case reported that reinstalling did not solve 50-2 until the VPN was disabled.
- Note the Sky iD you use and sign out if possible.
- Uninstall Sky Go.
- Restart the device.
- Confirm VPN, proxy, Private Relay or private DNS features are still disabled.
- Install Sky Go from the official app store or Sky download route.
- Sign in and test playback before re-enabling optional privacy tools.
When to contact Sky
Contact Sky when the error survives the network and device tests, appears across multiple devices and connections, or is accompanied by repeated authorisation failures. Include:
- the exact message and code, 50-2;
- device model and operating-system version;
- Sky Go app version;
- whether a VPN, Private Relay, private DNS or security filter was enabled;
- whether mobile data works;
- whether one device or several are affected;
- whether other Sky services work; and
- your Sky market and location, especially if travelling.
This information helps support separate a local app fault from network-location validation, account authorisation, entitlement and Sky-service problems.
