The Shuffle button usually looks like two crossing or intertwined arrows, often forming an X. The arrowheads point in different directions to show that songs will play in a changed rather than strictly listed order. A rough text approximation is ⇄ or ⤨.
How to recognize the Shuffle icon
Look for two diagonal arrows that cross, weave past one another, or follow separate paths before changing direction. Android’s Media3 documentation describes the standard control as two diagonal arrows facing upward and downward: Android Media3 shuffle control.
- Two arrow paths cross or intertwine.
- The arrowheads point in different directions.
- The overall shape may resemble an X, although artwork varies.
- There is normally no circular loop around the arrows; looping arrows usually mean Repeat.
The shape identifies the mode more reliably than its position or color. Music apps, desktop players, cars, televisions, and third-party interfaces can draw and place the control differently.
What Shuffle does
Shuffle changes the order of upcoming songs in the selected group—such as a playlist, album, library, or queue—so they do not play strictly in their displayed sequence. Apple Music defines Shuffle as playing songs in a random or shuffled order in its Windows guide and Mac guide.

The icon identifies the playback mode, not a universal mathematical definition of randomness. The exact queue behavior depends on the app, platform, account, and selected media.
Shuffle versus Repeat

The practical rule is simple: crossing arrows mean Shuffle; looping arrows mean Repeat.

How to tell whether Shuffle is on
When Shuffle is off, the icon is often gray, white, or otherwise subdued. When it is on, many players make the same icon brighter, change its color, add a highlight or background, or show a label such as “Shuffle On.” Colors are not universal, so check the app’s visual state rather than expecting one particular color.
Apple says its Shuffle button is highlighted when active on iPhone and Android. In Apple Music for Windows, the button changes color when enabled: Apple Music playback controls and Apple Music for Windows.

Where the button is usually located
- The expanded Now Playing screen, alongside Play, Previous, Next, and Repeat.
- An Up Next, queue, or playlist panel.
- The header of an album or playlist.
- The bottom playback bar on a desktop or web player.
Use the shape—not a fixed screen position—to find it. Compact players often hide secondary controls until you expand the current-player view.
Apple Music instructions
iPhone or Android
- Start playing a song, album, or playlist.
- Tap the player bar at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Up Next.
- Tap the Shuffle icon.
- Confirm that the button is highlighted; tap it again to turn Shuffle off.

Windows
- Open Apple Music and start playback.
- Select Shuffle in the playback controls.
- When the button changes color, Shuffle is active.
- Select it again to disable the mode.
Apple also provides quick-shuffle controls from album and playlist views in its Windows guide.
Mac
In the Mac Music app, use the playback controls and distinguish Shuffle from the separately labeled Repeat All and Repeat One controls. Apple documents those symbols in its Mac Music guide.

Why Shuffle may be gray, missing, or unavailable
A subdued icon does not always mean that Shuffle is simply switched off. Check these possibilities:
- No song is currently playing. Start playback first.
- You are viewing a compact player. Expand Now Playing and look for the queue or Up Next panel.
- The app has placed the control inside the playlist, album, or queue view.
- The current queue is generated by AutoPlay rather than a fixed album or playlist.
- The selected media type—such as a single podcast episode, audiobook chapter, or video—does not support Shuffle in that interface.
- The app layout, device version, account, region, or playback restrictions have changed what is available.
Apple specifically notes that Shuffle and Repeat can be inactive while AutoPlay is enabled, because an AutoPlay queue cannot be shuffled or repeated in the normal way. If appropriate, open the queue, stop or disable AutoPlay, and then check the controls again: Apple’s AutoPlay guidance.
Special and platform-specific shuffle modes
Not every crossed-arrow symbol means exactly the same thing. Android Media3 defines separate shuffle-on, shuffle-off, and shuffle-with-star states, and its ShuffleButton API supports a toggle and an accessibility content description.
A star, sparkle, or other overlay may indicate enhanced, smart, recommendation-based, or app-specific shuffle rather than ordinary randomization. Read the control’s label or accessibility description when available. Screen readers may announce states such as “Shuffle” or “Shuffle off,” even when the visual difference is subtle.

Quick identification
- Find the playback controls or queue.
- Look for two arrows crossing or changing paths.
- Check whether the icon is highlighted to determine whether it is active.
- If the arrows form a loop, you are looking at Repeat instead.
