BritBox is a paid streaming service focused on British television: BBC and ITV programs, mysteries, dramas, comedies, soaps, documentaries, classics and selected newer releases. It remains a standalone subscription service in the United States, while UK viewers access the BritBox catalogue through ITVX Premium. BBC Studios now owns BritBox International after buying ITV’s 50% stake in March 2024.
BritBox in one sentence
BritBox is a curated subscription video-on-demand service for British television, rather than a general-purpose streamer such as Netflix. Its catalogue and commercial model are regional: rights, prices, plans, devices and availability can differ substantially between countries.
Who owns BritBox?
BritBox began as a joint venture between BBC Studios and ITV. On March 1, 2024, ITV announced the sale of its entire 50% interest in BritBox International to BBC Studios for £255 million. ITV still licenses ITV programming to the service under continuing commercial agreements. BBC Studios now includes BritBox in its North American direct-to-consumer portfolio. See ITV’s ownership announcement and BBC Studios’ executive information.
Is BritBox still a separate service?
| Market | How viewers access it |
|---|---|
| United States | Standalone BritBox subscription through the US website and supported apps. |
| United Kingdom | The BritBox catalogue is included with ITVX Premium; BritBox no longer operates there in the same standalone form. |
| Other territories | Availability, catalogue, pricing, devices and plan structure depend on local rights and distribution agreements. |
ITV’s support documentation explains the move of BritBox UK to ITVX. UK subscribers receive the BritBox catalogue alongside additional ITVX Premium programming; they should not use the US signup flow. Check your local BritBox site before subscribing, because the US and UK products are not interchangeable.

What can you watch on BritBox?
BritBox is designed for viewers who want a concentrated British-TV library. Categories commonly represented on the US service include:
- Crime and mysteries: series such as Vera, Shetland, Father Brown and Death in Paradise.
- Police procedurals and serious drama: including Line of Duty and other BBC, ITV and independent productions.
- Comedies and sitcoms: such as Gavin & Stacey.
- Soaps: including Coronation Street and EastEnders, where rights allow.
- Period dramas, documentaries and factual programs.
- Lifestyle, reality, selected films and specials.
- BritBox Originals and titles marketed as “Only On BritBox.”
- Selected newer British series and premieres.
BritBox’s US pages describe the service as offering thousands of hours, with some copy specifying more than 7,000 hours. That is the company’s promotional description, not an independently audited count. The US homepage, signup page and US App Store listing show representative programming and current positioning.
A show labelled a BritBox Original or exclusive may be exclusive only in a particular country or licensing period. BritBox is not a complete archive of every BBC, ITV, Channel 4 or Channel 5 program, and ownership of the service does not guarantee rights to every program made by those companies.
How much does BritBox cost?
The following US direct-subscription prices were listed on BritBox’s official page on August 18, 2026. Prices, taxes, trial eligibility and renewal terms can change.

| US plan | Listed price | Key features |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $10.99 per month | Ad-free on-demand viewing, up to Full HD and two simultaneous streams; cancel anytime. |
| Annual | $109.99 per year | Same standard features. Paying monthly for 12 months would total $131.88, so the listed annual price saves $21.89 before taxes or promotions. |
| Premier | $149.99 per year | Up to 4K UHD, four simultaneous streams, downloads, selected early access and hundreds of BBC Select documentaries. |
The annual standard plan works out to about $9.17 per month when averaged over 12 months; Premier averages about $12.50. Those are arithmetic equivalents, not monthly billing options. BritBox advertises a seven-day free trial for eligible subscribers.
UK access and price
ITVX’s UK help page lists ITVX Premium at £5.99 per month or £59.99 per year. It includes the BritBox catalogue plus additional ITVX Premium content, so it is a different product from a US BritBox subscription. Details are in ITVX’s pricing guidance.
What does BritBox Premier add?
BritBox says all US plans include the ordinary BritBox catalogue; Premier primarily changes playback, household and ancillary features. It is the relevant upgrade when you need four concurrent viewers, want downloads for supported titles, require up to 4K UHD, value selected early releases or also want BBC Select documentaries.
- Choose Standard if Full HD, two streams and online viewing meet your needs.
- Choose Premier if four streams, offline viewing, 4K-capable playback, early access or BBC Select justify the higher annual price.
“Up to 4K” does not mean every title is available in 4K. Resolution, downloads and playback also depend on the program, device, operating system and licensing restrictions. Downloads are not advertised as a standard-plan feature.

Is BritBox ad-free?
The US direct plans are marketed as ad-free for on-demand viewing. BritBox’s terms nevertheless allow promotional material and advertising around live or linear streams. Therefore, “ad-free” describes the normal on-demand experience, not a promise that every type of stream or service message contains no promotion.
What devices support BritBox?
The US signup page lists support for web browsers, Apple TV, Roku, Android TV, Samsung smart TVs, Xfinity, Xumo, LG, Vizio, Chromecast, Fire TV, TCL TV and Sony Android TV. Exact support varies by country, model, operating-system version and whether billing is direct or through another platform. Check the local service page before paying if television access is essential.
BritBox compared with BBC iPlayer and ITVX
| Service | What it is | Main geographic reality |
|---|---|---|
| BritBox | Paid, curated British-TV service with a standalone US product and territory-specific international versions. | Catalogue and rights vary by country. |
| BBC iPlayer | BBC’s UK streaming and catch-up service. | UK-focused and geographically restricted; a BritBox subscription does not grant access. |
| ITVX | ITV’s UK platform, with free ad-supported viewing and a Premium tier. | ITVX Premium includes the UK BritBox catalogue plus other ITVX content. |
ITVX may block connections it identifies as outside the UK or using a VPN or proxy. Do not assume that bypassing a location check is supported or that a VPN guarantees access; see ITVX’s location guidance.
Is BritBox worth paying for?
It is a strong fit when you:
- Regularly watch British crime, mysteries, dramas, comedies, soaps or classic television.
- Prefer a concentrated specialist catalogue to a broad general-entertainment service.
- Want BBC- and ITV-associated programming that may appear inconsistently on Netflix or Prime Video.
- Need multiple household streams, downloads or 4K and are willing to pay for Premier.
It may be a poor fit when you:
- Mainly want US blockbusters, major sports or a large general film catalogue.
- Want only one specific show and could obtain it elsewhere.
- Already receive most of your desired titles through another subscription.
- Expect every program from BBC, ITV or another UK broadcaster to be included.
Before subscribing, search for the exact show and season in your country, confirm whether it is included in your chosen plan, and compare another service you already pay for. Licensing windows can remove a season, delay a release or move a title to ITVX, BBC iPlayer or a different platform.
Common BritBox problems and what they mean
“The show I want is missing.”
Check the country-specific catalogue and the exact season. Rights may cover only selected seasons, may have expired, or may place the title on another service. A third-party version can also have a different catalogue from direct BritBox.
“Where did BritBox UK go?”
UK access moved to ITVX Premium. The US standalone service is not the UK replacement.
“Why am I seeing promotions?”
Ad-free on-demand viewing is different from promotional material or advertising associated with live and linear streams.
“Why is 4K unavailable?”
Premier supports up to 4K UHD, but the title, device, connection and licensing must all support that resolution.

“Why can’t I download an episode?”
Downloads require Premier in the US and remain subject to title, device and rights restrictions.
“I subscribed through another company. How do I cancel?”
App stores, connected-TV platforms and channel marketplaces can use different billing, plan names, promotions and cancellation paths. Cancel through the same provider that charged you, and verify its feature list rather than assuming it matches direct BritBox.
Alternatives to consider
| Service | When it may suit you better |
|---|---|
| Acorn TV | You mainly want mysteries, dramas and international television rather than the broader BBC/ITV-centered BritBox mix. |
| Netflix | You want a broad general catalogue that includes selected British originals and acquisitions. |
| Amazon Prime Video | You already have Prime and are comfortable checking individual titles, rentals or add-on channels. |
| BBC iPlayer | You are in the UK and specifically want BBC catch-up and streaming content, subject to its geographic rules. |
The Bottom Line
BritBox is best understood as a specialist British-TV service. It is especially compelling for viewers who want a concentrated collection of British mysteries, dramas, comedies, classics and selected new releases. Its value depends on your country, the exact catalogue you need and whether Standard or Premier supplies the streams, downloads and picture quality you will actually use.
