Apple Music’s iOS 26.4 Redesign Divided Users—And Readability Is the Real Issue

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Music’s controversy is mainly about a visual decision: iOS 26.4 gives album and playlist pages full-screen, artwork-driven backgrounds. The result is more immersive, but saturated images, translucency and motion can make titles and controls harder to read. The argument began during the iOS 26.4 beta; Apple has since shipped iOS 26.4 and listed follow-up releases including iOS 26.4.2. The criticism is therefore not simply resistance to change. It is strongest when decoration competes with legibility, consistency or visual comfort.

What changed in Apple Music

Full-screen album and playlist backgrounds

Apple’s iOS 26.4 notes describe full-screen backgrounds for album and playlist pages. Artwork now influences the entire presentation instead of remaining a contained image beside mostly stable interface elements. Two albums can consequently produce very different color, contrast and readability conditions. See Apple’s release notes at Apple Support.

Liquid Glass is the system-wide backdrop

These changes sit inside iOS 26’s Liquid Glass design language. Apple describes Liquid Glass as a translucent material that reflects and refracts its surroundings; in Apple Music, the tab bar floats above content and changes as users browse. That system redesign is broader than Apple Music, so not every transparency complaint originated in the music app. Apple’s overview is at Apple Newsroom.

Animated artwork is related, but different

Supported albums can display artist-designed, full-screen animations. This is a separate capability from the new full-screen album and playlist backgrounds, although both make artwork more prominent. Apple documents animated media artwork at Apple Support and for developers at Apple Developer.

New tools beyond the redesign

  • Playlist Playground (beta): creates a playlist from a description and supplies a title, description and tracklist.
  • Concerts: finds nearby shows by artists in your library and suggests additional artists based on listening. Apple Music for Artists says listings come from Bandsintown or Ticketmaster (Apple Music for Artists).
  • Offline Music Recognition: Control Center can identify a song without an internet connection and return the result later.
  • Ambient Music widget: offers Sleep, Chill, Productivity and Wellbeing categories.
  • Offline lyrics: lyrics remain available for downloaded songs.
  • Favorite Songs in Top Picks: favorites can appear in the Home tab’s recommendations.

Feature availability can vary by region, language, iPhone model, software version and account. Playlist Playground is explicitly labeled beta.

Why the backlash has a legitimate basis

Readability changes from album to album

When text sits over artwork, there is no single contrast outcome. Bright cover art can compete with white labels; dark or detailed imagery can obscure controls; translucent surfaces can reduce the visual separation between a button and its background. The relevant test is whether a listener can quickly identify the album, song, artist and controls—not whether the design looks fashionable in a screenshot.

Motion and transparency can add fatigue

Animated covers, refractive surfaces and changing backgrounds may be distracting for people sensitive to motion, flashing or visual clutter. Apple’s iOS 26.4 notes say Reduce Motion works more reliably with Liquid Glass animations and add Reduce Bright Effects, which minimizes bright flashes when tapping interface elements. Those changes acknowledge visual-comfort concerns, but they do not establish that every Apple Music complaint has been solved.

Consistency matters for low-vision users

A stable interface lets people learn where information and controls are. Artwork-led pages make contrast and emphasis depend on the release being viewed. That can create a practical accessibility problem without proving that Apple Music fails a formal accessibility standard; the available reports document user concerns, not an independent audit.

Why other listeners welcome it

The same design can feel expressive rather than obstructive. Album art is larger, supported releases can feel artist-designed, and pages have more visual identity than the previous restrained layout. Playlist Playground can turn a natural-language idea into a listening queue, while Concerts connects listening history with live events. For people who browse by artwork, those are meaningful improvements rather than cosmetic polish.

Apple Music also remains compelling for listeners who want tight Apple-device integration, lossless and Spatial Audio options, library management and Apple’s editorial curation. Those are product-positioning advantages, not evidence that the redesign is universally better.

Beta reaction versus the released software

The widely cited report from BGR was published on February 27, 2026, while iOS 26.4 was still being tested (BGR). It captured online disagreement, including praise from people who preferred the more dynamic look and complaints about text over saturated backgrounds. It did not measure how many users held either view, verify that beta behavior was unchanged at release, or separate every iOS 26 system effect from Apple Music-specific changes.

Apple’s later release notes confirm that iOS 26.4 shipped the backgrounds and the additional music features, followed by bug-fix and security updates. A beta screenshot is therefore evidence of the controversy’s starting point, not a complete review of every current device and release. Reports that Apple Music is categorically worse than Spotify, or that Spotify has a superior algorithm or social experience, require separate current testing and should not be treated as established facts here.

Make Apple Music calmer and easier to scan

These are system-level workarounds, so labels can move between iOS releases. Check the wording on your iPhone.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility, then Motion, and turn on Reduce Motion. Apple says iOS 26.4 improves its effect on Liquid Glass animations.
  3. For a less transparent appearance, open Settings > Display & Brightness > Liquid Glass and choose Tinted, if that control is present.
  4. Open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and try Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast.

These settings affect broader iOS presentation, not just Apple Music, and their impact can differ by screen and device. If you need speed over artwork, use list-oriented Library views. Apple’s iPhone guide describes Albums, Songs, Playlists and Downloaded categories, plus sorting by title, artist, date added and release date (Apple iPhone User Guide).

Apple Music or Spotify after the redesign?

Priority Apple Music Spotify
Visual experience Immersive artwork, Liquid Glass surfaces and animated art on supported albums. Compare with the current app rather than assuming one service is objectively clearer.
Playlist creation Playlist Playground (beta), subject to availability. Assess Spotify’s current tools separately; no performance comparison is established here.
Discovery Editorial curation, listening-based Concerts and new Home recommendations. Do not assume superior recommendations without current comparative testing.
Ecosystem Strong integration with Apple devices and Apple’s library model. Often chosen for cross-platform use and sharing; verify the features you need.
Accessibility System controls can reduce motion, transparency and bright effects. Check Spotify’s current accessibility controls on your devices.

Do not switch solely because of the redesign. Try the appearance settings and list views first. Conversely, if cross-platform access or social playlist use is central to your routine, compare those workflows directly before choosing a service.

Who should update—and who may want a different experience?

The update is a good fit for

  • Listeners who enjoy prominent artwork and supported animated covers.
  • People who want to describe a playlist idea instead of building one track by track.
  • Concertgoers interested in shows linked to their listening history.
  • Users already invested in Apple’s devices and library features.

Expect friction if you prioritize

  • High information density and rapid scanning.
  • Predictable contrast for every album page.
  • Low-motion, low-transparency or low-stimulation interfaces.
  • A stable layout that changes as little as possible between devices.

Animated artwork is limited to supported albums, concert coverage depends on external provider data, and regional or device restrictions can hide features. Smaller cities may have fewer listed events, and Playlist Playground may not appear even on a compatible subscription if rollout or eligibility differs.

Verdict

Apple Music’s iOS 26.4 redesign is defensible as a visual evolution, but the “good reason” behind the backlash is functional: text-background contrast, control visibility, motion and consistency. If immersion and discovery tools matter most, the update adds genuine value. If clarity, speed or visual comfort matter most, the same pages can feel like a downgrade. The new features make iOS 26.4 more than a cosmetic refresh, but they do not invalidate users who need a calmer, more predictable interface.
