Spotify’s Listening activity feature shows the music you are currently playing inside Spotify Messages. Spotify announced it on January 7, 2026, as an opt-in feature rolling out on mobile in select markets—not a universal public feed—so availability still depends on your country, account, age and rollout status.
What Spotify Listening activity does
Listening activity is a live status inside a Spotify chat. When enabled, people in an eligible conversation can see the music you are playing while you listen, without requiring you to send each track manually.
The announcement describes the feature as current music activity. Spotify’s Messages service can also share podcasts, audiobooks and other content, but that broader sharing capability does not establish that podcasts or audiobooks appear in the live Listening activity status.
The feature is contained within Spotify Messages. The available documentation does not say that it automatically posts your listening to your public profile, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp or every follower.

Listening activity, sharing and Jam are different

Seeing someone’s current track does not mean you have joined synchronized playback. Listening activity is status sharing; Jam is the separate shared-listening feature.
How to turn Listening activity on
Spotify’s documented controls are on mobile. Menu names can vary slightly by operating system, app version and staged rollout.
- Open Spotify on your phone or tablet.
- Open your profile or the side drawer and choose View profile (or the related settings entry).
- Open Privacy and social settings.
- Find the Listening activity control.
- Turn it on, then review the conversations in which you want to use it.
Spotify also describes a control for turning activity off in an individual group conversation through that group’s chat settings. If the option is missing, that usually indicates market eligibility, account rollout, app version or another Messages requirement rather than a setting hidden in the Now Playing screen.

How to start a Spotify Message
Share an item first
- Open a song or another shareable Spotify item and tap Share.
- Choose a suggested friend or create an invite link.
- Select recipients—Spotify support says you can select up to 10 people.
- Send the item. A first contact may receive a message request that they can accept, block or delete.
Start a chat directly
- Tap your profile picture.
- Under Messages, tap New message.
- Select a recipient and send a message.
The Spotify Messages support page lists songs, playlists, albums, audiobooks, podcast episodes, artists, live events and countdown pages as shareable content. Individual availability can vary by market.
Who can use it?
Messages was announced for both Free and Premium users in select markets, and Spotify says users must be at least 16 to access Messages. The service is documented as a mobile feature; Spotify has not established equivalent Listening activity access on desktop or the web.
These are separate eligibility questions:
- Your account may have Messages but not yet have Listening activity.
- Listening activity may be available without the Premium-only Request to Jam capability.
- A staged rollout can make the feature appear for one account in a market and not another.

Privacy: who sees your current track?
Listening activity is opt-in. Its documented visibility is tied to people and groups in Spotify Messages, with global controls in Privacy and social settings and additional controls for individual group chats.
Before enabling it, consider where you use Spotify:
- Music played on a family or shared account could be visible in an eligible chat.
- Listening at work or in a shared space may reveal your current activity when you did not intend to start a conversation.
- Turning the feature off globally or for a group stops the in-chat activity display according to Spotify’s controls.
The announcement confirms display of current music in Messages; it does not establish that this feature exposes your location, listening duration, complete listening history or a public activity archive.

What to do if Listening activity is missing
- Use the latest Spotify mobile app and reopen it after updating.
- Confirm that Messages is available on your account and that you meet the 16-plus age requirement.
- Check your country and account rollout status; Spotify announced availability in select markets rather than everywhere at once.
- Look under Privacy and social settings, not only in the Now Playing view.
- Open the specific group’s chat settings to check its activity control.
- If a person does not appear in the recipient list, send the Spotify link through another messaging app. Spotify documents that fallback in its support instructions.
Not finding a contact does not necessarily mean the app is broken; messaging eligibility and rollout rules can limit the recipient list.
Listening activity versus Request to Jam
Spotify introduced Listening activity alongside Request to Jam, but they solve different problems. Listening activity lets chat participants see what is playing. Request to Jam lets a Premium user invite people to a shared Jam from a Messages conversation. A visible track is not proof that anyone else is listening in sync.
If your goal is only to show friends the song currently playing, Premium is not established as a requirement: Spotify’s Messages rollout included Free and Premium users in select markets. Premium matters for the Jam-related function, not automatically for the basic status feature.

How Spotify Messages fits into sharing
Spotify reported nearly 40 million users sending nearly 340 million messages by January 7, 2026, a company-reported figure in its product announcement. Messages is intended as a Spotify-native way to discuss and exchange content that users can otherwise share through services such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and TikTok. Those services can carry Spotify links, but they are not the same as an in-chat live Listening activity status.

The practical answer
Spotify has added an opt-in way to show your current music inside eligible Spotify Messages chats. It is best understood as a chat-based activity indicator—not a public profile broadcast, automatic song-sharing action or synchronized listening session. Because the rollout is mobile-focused and market-dependent, the absence of the setting can be normal even when Messages itself is available.
