Spotify and Parental Controls: What Parents Need to Know in 2026

Spotify's strongest parental controls require a managed account, while Spotify Kids offers a more curated US experience through Premium Family. Here's how each works, what remains unfiltered and how to test your setup.

Spotify does offer parental controls, but the strongest options depend on account type, plan and country. In the United States, a managed account on Premium Family provides the broadest controls in the main Spotify app, while Spotify Kids offers a smaller, editor-curated catalog for younger children. Neither option is a complete safety filter: parents should also use device-level restrictions and review what their child can access.

Choose the right Spotify setup

Spotify has three distinct ways for a child to listen. They are not interchangeable.

Option Best for What it provides Main limitation
Normal account Independent listeners who need few restrictions Standard Spotify settings and catalog access No equivalent parent-managed restriction set
Managed account Children or teens who want mainstream music Separate recommendations, parent-controlled explicit content, artists, songs, videos and Canvas, plus restricted social and purchasing features Does not filter every unsuitable song, podcast, advertisement or theme
Spotify Kids Younger children needing a simplified, curated experience Editor-selected music, stories, audiobooks and playlists; age-oriented experiences and offline listening Narrower catalog and, on Spotify’s current US page, Premium Family is required

Spotify describes managed accounts and their controls at its managed-account support page. Spotify Kids is a separate app, not a child-themed skin for the main app; see Spotify’s US Kids page and the iOS listing.

When Spotify Kids makes sense

Choose Kids when a child mainly needs children’s music, stories, lullabies or soundtracks and does not need Spotify’s full discovery system. Its limited catalog reduces the number of paths to unexpected material, but it can feel too restrictive for an older child.

When a managed account makes sense

Choose a managed account when a child wants popular or niche mainstream music and you need to block particular artists or songs, separate recommendations from the parent’s profile, and retain Premium listening benefits.

What parents can control

Explicit content

For a managed account, explicit content is blocked by default when the account is created, according to Spotify’s parental guide. The Family plan manager can change that setting. The label generally reflects classifications supplied by Spotify or rights holders; it is not a promise that every violent, sexual, frightening or otherwise unsuitable lyric is excluded.

Artists and songs

Managed-account controls let a parent block specific artists or songs. A blocked track may still be mentioned in a playlist or history even though playback is restricted, and alternate versions or another account can create apparent loopholes.

Videos and Canvas

Spotify’s video controls were expanded in April 2026. On a managed account, open Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Parental controls → managed account → Videos and Canvas. Spotify’s announcement says video controls were also expanded to Family-plan accounts and users across Free, Premium and Basic accounts; availability and labels can vary by region and app version (announcement).

Turning video off does not necessarily remove every visual or advertisement. Spotify notes that free managed accounts may still show video advertisements, and Canvas visuals can sometimes appear with audio advertisements even when related settings are disabled.

Account, social and purchasing limits

Spotify says managed profiles have separate recommendations, cannot be followed or searched by other users, and have no in-app purchases. They can be used on phones, tablets and speakers. A Premium Family plan has up to six account slots; Spotify’s documentation also describes separate limits for creating managed accounts, so those numbers should not be treated as the same quota.

What Spotify does not reliably control

  • Unlabeled mature material: a suggestive or disturbing song may not carry an explicit label.
  • Podcasts and audiobooks: the documented managed-account controls do not establish a universal topic filter for spoken-word programs. Review shows before allowing regular listening.
  • Advertisements: free accounts can still encounter video advertising, including visual exceptions described above.
  • Other apps and browsers: Spotify settings do not restrict YouTube, web searches, messaging or app installation.
  • The parent’s account: a child using the parent’s login bypasses the child’s restrictions.
  • Every device interface: televisions, consoles, cars and smart speakers may expose different account selectors or controls.

Use Apple Screen Time, Google Family Link or equivalent operating-system tools to limit app installation, usage time, purchases and access to other services. Spotify controls the Spotify account; device controls govern the device.

How to create and configure a managed account

Eligibility and consent

In the United States, the parent or legal guardian must be the Premium Family plan manager for the documented managed-account setup. Spotify’s pages say managed accounts are intended for children under 13 and, depending on region, young listeners up to 18. Minimum-age rules are country-specific, so use the child’s real age and the account’s actual country rather than entering a false birth date. Spotify may request parental consent through an identity-verification service such as Yoti, depending on location.

Creation steps

  1. Sign in with the parent or guardian’s Spotify account.
  2. Open the account or Family-management area and choose the option to create or set up a managed account.
  3. Enter the child’s account details and complete the consent process.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions, then open Parental controls to configure the profile.

Spotify’s web and app labels can differ. The current support instructions are documented at Setting up a managed account on Premium Family.

Configure restrictions

  1. Tap the profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Parental controls.
  4. Select the managed account.
  5. Set Explicit content, Videos and Canvas, and the artist or song restrictions you want.
  6. Create or confirm the parental-control PIN.
  7. Sign in on the child’s actual phone, tablet, speaker or other device and test playback.

Change settings later from the same area. Do not share the parent’s Spotify password, and verify that every device uses the child’s profile.

How to use Spotify Kids

  1. Subscribe to Premium Family if required in your country; Spotify’s current US page lists Kids within that plan.
  2. Install Spotify Kids from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  3. Create the child’s Kids profile and select the relevant age-oriented experience where offered.
  4. Test downloads and playback before handing over the device.

Spotify Kids accounts count toward the Family allocation according to the App Store listing. Catalogs and age options can vary by country, platform and profile. Kids is more curated, not universally risk-free, and may omit music an older child expects.

Test the setup before relying on it

  • Play a known explicit track and confirm that playback is blocked.
  • Try a blocked artist through search, a playlist, radio and a recommendation.
  • Check that video and Canvas settings behave as expected, including on a free account if applicable.
  • Open Spotify on every smart speaker, car, console, TV and browser the child can use.
  • Confirm the child cannot switch to the parent’s profile or another account.
  • Check history and recommendations after changing a restriction. Spotify warns that previously allowed content can remain visible in listening history.
  • Use device-level controls to restrict other apps, purchases and screen time.

Troubleshooting common failures

The parental-controls option is missing

Confirm that you are the Premium Family manager, that the subscription is Family rather than Individual or Duo, that the app is updated, and that the feature is offered in the account’s country. Check whether the child’s profile was created as managed rather than as a normal account. Some account-management actions may appear on the web rather than in the mobile app. If the feature is unavailable locally, use device controls or a child-focused service; do not falsify age information.

Unwanted material still appears

Check whether it is unlabeled, spoken-word content, an advertisement, a video or an item on another account. Also check that a setting was saved, the device is not using the parent’s profile, and the child has not retained an alternate account. History or recommendations can continue to show material that was allowed before a restriction changed.

The child can change settings

Use the parental-control PIN, keep the parent login private, and test settings from the child’s device. A managed account should be administered by the parent or guardian.

Premium Family: price and value

Spotify’s US pricing page showed Premium Family at $21.99 per month on August 18, 2026. The page lists up to six Premium accounts, parental controls for the plan manager, same-address eligibility, the ability to create accounts for listeners under 13, and cancellation at any time. Prices, taxes, promotions and eligibility can change; check Spotify Premium and the Family page before subscribing.

Family is worthwhile when several household members need Premium, a child needs offline or ad-free listening, or you want managed-account and Kids options. It is a poor fit if household members do not live at the same address, one person needs only a single account, or you expect a universal filter for podcasts, advertisements and every mature theme.

Privacy and personalization

Spotify says managed accounts use listening data to provide personalized recommendations. Explain that personalization to the child and review Spotify’s privacy information before creating the account. The documented controls do not establish a dashboard through which parents can see every listening action or read private communications.

What happens when a child gets older?

Spotify’s graduation process depends on the minimum age that applies in the account’s country. Spotify notifies the young listener, who may request a self-managed account; the parent or guardian can approve or decline. If approved, playlists, saved music and recommendations are retained while many child-specific restrictions end. If no request is made or approval is withheld, Spotify says the account remains managed until age 18. A Premium Family manager retains some controls over explicit content, videos and Canvas after graduation. Details are in Spotify’s graduation guidance.

Decision guide

Your situation Most suitable starting point Why
Young child who needs the narrowest catalog Spotify Kids Curated content and simplified navigation
Child wants mainstream music with targeted restrictions Managed account Separate recommendations plus artist, song, explicit and visual controls
Teen moving toward independence Managed account, then graduation Allows a staged transition while preserving playlists
Parent mainly wants app-time, purchase or device limits Spotify settings plus Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link Device tools govern access beyond Spotify
Family needs a tightly controlled environment unavailable through Spotify Spotify Kids, a curated local setup or another service Spotify’s broad catalog and spoken-word controls may not meet the requirement

For device controls, see Apple Screen Time and Google Family Link. Families may also compare Apple Music, YouTube Premium or Amazon Music, but verify their current regional pricing and child features separately.

The Bottom Line

Use Spotify Kids for a younger child who benefits from a curated catalog, and a managed account for an older child who needs mainstream music with targeted restrictions. In either case, pair Spotify’s settings with device-level controls and regular supervision: explicit-content labels and video switches reduce risk, but they do not make the entire Spotify catalog universally age-appropriate.
