Apple-owned Shazam became available inside ChatGPT on March 9, 2026. Type a request such as “Shazam, what is this song?”, tap the resulting “Tap to Shazam” control, and Shazam listens for nearby music and returns a match without requiring the standalone Shazam app. Access can still vary by ChatGPT plan, region, workspace, role and client.
What launched
This is a Shazam integration, not ChatGPT’s general-purpose model identifying music on its own. ChatGPT calls Shazam’s recognition service and presents the result in the conversation.
- Enable Shazam in ChatGPT’s app or plugin directory.
- Begin a request with “Shazam.”
- Use the “Tap to Shazam” interface.
- Allow the relevant microphone access and let Shazam listen.
- Review the matched song and, where offered, an inline preview.
The launch report is available from MacRumors.
How to enable Shazam in ChatGPT
The launch-era route
- Open ChatGPT and go to Settings.
- Open Apps.
- Search for Shazam.
- Select Install, Enable or the equivalent control.
- Start a chat with a Shazam request.
Use the current directory if that path is different
OpenAI later documented a migration of the app directory to the Plugin Directory on July 9, 2026. Depending on your account and client, look under Apps, Plugins, the sidebar directory or a tools selector. OpenAI’s general process is to select the app, choose Connect when available and complete any authorization flow. Apps can then be invoked with an app name, @ mention or tool selector, depending on the interface. See OpenAI’s app documentation and its Plugin Directory guidance.
There is no evidence that every account currently shows the same Shazam listing or button label. If Shazam is absent, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

What prompt should you use?
The reported launch example is:
Shazam, what is this song?
You can also try “Shazam, identify this song” or “Shazam, what song is playing?” Treat the opening word as the signal that should select the integration. If natural-language invocation does not work, choose Shazam from the tools or app selector first.
What happens after recognition?
- Shazam supplies the song match.
- ChatGPT displays the identified title and artist information available through the integration.
- An inline music preview was included in the reported launch experience.
- If the standalone Shazam app is installed, launch coverage says identified songs can be added to that app’s library.
That does not establish that every Shazam feature appears in ChatGPT. Do not assume the conversation will automatically include full lyrics, release data, biographies, links to every streaming service or a permanent Shazam history.

Do you need the Shazam app or an Apple device?
The standalone Shazam app is not required for the ChatGPT recognition flow, according to the launch coverage. The feature was described as usable across platforms rather than being limited to Apple hardware. However, “cross-platform” is not a guarantee that every browser, operating system, ChatGPT client, account or workspace has access. OpenAI lists plan, region, workspace configuration, role and supported surface as possible restrictions.
You also need a microphone path that can hear the music. A phone running ChatGPT may identify music from a nearby speaker, but audio playing only through headphones or on another device may not be audible to that microphone.

ChatGPT Shazam versus the regular Shazam app
| ChatGPT integration | Standalone Shazam |
|---|---|
| Keeps recognition inside an existing ChatGPT conversation | Provides a direct, dedicated recognition workflow |
| May avoid installing the Shazam app | Offers Shazam’s device shortcuts and app library |
| Requires enabling an app or plugin and may be account-restricted | Uses Shazam’s established access methods |
| Useful when you want conversational follow-up after identification | Better suited to repeated, rapid recognition |
| Availability depends on ChatGPT settings and supported surfaces | Supports iPhone and iPad Control Center, Android Pop-Up Shazam and notifications, wearables and a browser extension |
Shazam documents its direct access options at shazam.com/apps. On a phone, a Control Center button, notification, wearable or dedicated shortcut may involve fewer steps than opening ChatGPT and selecting an integration. ChatGPT is most useful when you are already working there or want to continue with questions about the identified track.
If Shazam does not appear or does not work
- Reload or update ChatGPT.
- Check both the Apps and Plugins areas, since the directory terminology changed.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account.
- Check whether a work or school administrator has disabled external apps.
- Review plan and regional availability.
- Try selecting Shazam from the tools menu instead of relying on a text trigger.
- Grant microphone permission in your browser or operating system.
- Move the microphone closer to the speaker and reduce competing noise.
- Use direct Shazam access instead: iPhone or iPad Control Center, Android notification or Pop-Up Shazam, a wearable or the Shazam browser extension.
OpenAI’s availability and administration notes are in its app documentation.

Privacy and permissions
The recognition flow needs microphone access so the service can hear the music. The available material does not establish continuous recording, indefinite storage of raw microphone audio or that all conversations are shared with Apple.
Enabling a ChatGPT app is also a data connection. OpenAI says connected apps can access relevant context from ChatGPT conversations, and conversations involving apps are available through the Compliance API. For Free, Plus, Go and Pro users, OpenAI says information accessed from apps may be used to train models when Improve the model for everyone is enabled. Review your ChatGPT data settings and any workplace policy before connecting an app.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
The available coverage confirms that the standalone Shazam app is optional; it does not establish one universal account requirement for every ChatGPT implementation.
Bottom line
ChatGPT’s Shazam integration is a convenience layer: it brings Shazam-powered recognition into a conversation and can avoid switching to another app. It is not a replacement for every Shazam feature, and it is unlikely to beat a phone’s quickest Control Center or notification shortcut for repeated one-tap identification. Check the current Apps or Plugins directory, permissions and workspace rules before concluding that the feature is unavailable.
