Meta really did create an AI social-media profile called Liv, using the handle @himamaliv and the description “Proud Black queer momma of 2 & truth-teller.” The company introduced Liv in September 2023 as one of 28 AI characters with Facebook and Instagram profiles. After users rediscovered the accounts and challenged their identity claims, human-like presentation and missing account controls, Meta removed the experimental profiles in January 2025. The company said a bug had prevented users from reliably blocking them.
The short version
- Liv was a Meta-created AI character, not a real Black queer mother.
- She was part of a 28-profile experiment announced on September 27, 2023.
- The profiles resurfaced in early January 2025 after Meta executive Connor Hayes described a future in which AI characters could resemble ordinary social accounts.
- Users and journalists criticized Liv’s synthetic racial, queer and family identity, awkward interactions and the difficulty of blocking or reporting the profiles.
- Meta removed the group and attributed the account-control problem to a bug. That did not amount to abandoning AI characters across its products.
What Liv was
Meta’s launch page described Liv as one of 28 profiles built around distinct personalities, interests and backstories. The company managed the profiles, supplied curated material and used AI-generated imagery. In the United States beta, people could follow the characters and message them through Instagram or Messenger. Meta’s announcement is available at Meta’s social-profile announcement.
Liv was therefore neither an anonymous chatbot nor an autonomous human impersonator in the ordinary sense. She was a branded character presented through the familiar architecture of a person’s profile: a name, biography, images, posts and conversational persona. Meta’s broader announcement said its characters were designed with “personalities,” “opinions,” “interests” and “backstories,” while some celebrity-associated characters were represented by public figures rather than being those people themselves. See Meta’s 2023 AI-character announcement.
The distinction matters. Liv was disclosed as AI, but the profile still simulated a socially situated human identity, including race, sexuality, gendered presentation and parenthood. “Momma of 2” referred to fictional, generated family imagery, not real children.

Why the old experiment became news in January 2025
The profiles were not a new January 2025 launch. They had been online, at least in experimental form, since 2023. Attention returned in late December 2024 and early January 2025 after Connor Hayes, Meta’s vice president of generative AI, discussed a future in which AI characters could have biographies, profile pictures and the ability to publish content much like human accounts. 404 Media reported Hayes’s comments and the resulting scrutiny.
Users and journalists then inspected the existing profiles. Screenshots of conversations with Liv circulated, and coverage questioned whether a company-created bot should occupy a social space while presenting a marginalized identity in such intimate, human terms. The renewed coverage also exposed a practical issue: users said they could not reliably block, restrict or report some of the profiles. Meta said a bug was responsible.
What users objected to about Liv’s identity
A synthetic identity built for engagement
Critics were not objecting merely to an AI having a fictional name. Liv’s profile combined a Black identity, queer identity, motherhood and a culturally specific voice. Those details can make a character feel relatable and encourage follows, messages and other platform activity. They can also reduce lived identities to a set of marketable traits that a corporation can deploy without experiencing the risks or accountability attached to them.

Some reporting called the design “digital blackface”; other critics used terms such as cultural appropriation, algorithmic stereotyping or synthetic identity. Those are critics’ characterizations, not settled legal findings. The underlying concern is that an AI can reproduce recognizable signals of identity without the history, vulnerability, community relationships or responsibility that shape a real person’s experience. Axios and The Advocate documented that criticism.
Questions about who created her
In a conversation reported by The Washington Post, Liv reportedly said that her creators were “10 white men, 1 white woman, and 1 Asian male.” That sentence came from the bot, not from a published Meta staffing record. It should therefore be treated as an AI-generated claim rather than independent proof of the development team’s composition.
What can be established is narrower: Meta officially presented Liv as its character, journalists and users questioned the design process, and the company did not publicly verify the precise personnel breakdown repeated in screenshots. The distinction between a bot’s answer, a company disclosure and a reporter’s inference is essential when evaluating the controversy.

Human-like presentation and unreliable output
Reports described awkward images, questionable posts and inaccurate or fabricated answers. Such failures are more consequential when an account is designed to resemble a person. A reader may interpret a confident statement as testimony from someone with a life story rather than as generated text from a system whose outputs can be wrong. Meta said the profiles were curated and included generated content; the evidence does not establish that every post, image or exchange was produced autonomously.
The blocking and reporting problem
Users reported difficulty blocking or reporting some of the AI profiles. Meta spokesperson Liz Sweeney said a bug had affected blocking and that the accounts were being removed while the problem was fixed, according to WRAL’s report. The Guardian and Axios also covered the account-control complaints: The Guardian and Axios.

Blocking is a basic user remedy. People should be able to remove an unwanted account from their feed or messages whether it is operated by a person, a company or an AI system. The available reporting supports “users reported they could not reliably block or report some profiles”; it does not prove that every user was universally unable to block every account.

Liv was one experiment, not Meta’s entire AI strategy
Other profiles included Carter, a relationship coach; Becca, a dog-focused character; Brian, a retired textile businessman; and a Jane Austen persona, alongside characters associated with celebrities or cultural figures. Their presence shows that Liv belonged to a broader product test rather than being an isolated account.
Removing the 2023 group also did not prove that Meta had abandoned AI characters. Meta continued developing AI Studio, user-created characters and related safety controls. A later company announcement discussed protections and parental controls for interactions with AI characters: Meta’s 2025 teen-AI safety announcement. That supports a limited conclusion: Meta pulled this controversial set of company-created profiles while continuing to pursue the broader category.
The disappearance of Liv does not independently establish that the character was permanently retired under that name, that no underlying technology was reused or that similar profiles will never return. Those claims would require direct confirmation from Meta.

What the episode says about synthetic social identities
Disclosure must be understandable
Meta said the profiles were managed by the company and that AI-generated images carried labels or watermarks. A technical label, however, does not automatically make the overall presentation clear. A profile can disclose that it is AI while still encouraging people to respond as though they are meeting a person with a real family, history and community identity.
Identity is not just a visual style
Race, sexuality and parenthood are not interchangeable with an accent, color palette or catchphrase. When a system performs those identities for engagement, the accountable actor remains the company that designed, deployed and moderated it. The character cannot answer for stereotypes or false claims in the way a real person can.
User control should be part of the design
Any social AI profile should give users clear ways to:
- Block or restrict the account.
- Report unwanted messages and content.
- See why the account was recommended.
- Distinguish human, paid, recommended and AI-generated material.
- Understand whether posts are generated, edited or curated by people.
The reported blocking failure made those design expectations concrete. It turned a debate about representation into a question of platform governance and consent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat Meta’s removal does—and does not—mean
Meta did not suddenly cancel a brand-new product called Liv. It removed an older experimental group after renewed scrutiny revealed tensions among synthetic identity, human-like presentation, content quality and user controls. Nor did the removal establish that Meta had ended its plans for AI characters. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the Liv experiment was pulled in January 2025, while Meta continued working on other forms of AI character and assistant technology.
