YouTube’s “Restyle a track” was a limited Dream Track experiment announced on November 12, 2024. A small group of Shorts creators could choose certain official songs, describe a different genre or mood, and generate a unique approximately 30-second soundtrack. YouTube said the result retained the source song’s essential vocals and lyrics, while the Short identified both the original song and the AI restyling.
It was not a general-purpose remix studio: creators could not upload any song, edit individual stems, or assume they owned a downloadable recording.
What YouTube actually tested
The experiment added a “Restyle a track” prompt to the Shorts creation flow. After selecting an eligible official song, a participating creator described the desired transformation—such as a new genre, mood, or stylistic treatment. YouTube then generated a short soundtrack for use in a Short.
The catalog was limited to songs made available by participating music partners. A track appearing in YouTube’s ordinary music or Shorts library did not necessarily qualify for AI restyling. The public announcement did not publish a complete list of participating songs or partners.

YouTube described the output as a generative reinterpretation. “Retaining the essence” of vocals and lyrics did not promise an exact copy of the original performance, melody, timing, instrumentation, mix, or master recording.
YouTube’s announcement of the test described the result as a unique 30-second soundtrack intended for Shorts—not a full-length replacement version or downloadable production master.
How it fits into Dream Track
2023: AI-generated artist voices and styles
Dream Track began as a limited U.S. experiment in which selected creators generated up-to-30-second Shorts soundtracks using AI-generated voices and musical styles associated with participating artists. The initial artist group included Alec Benjamin, Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, John Legend, Papoose, Sia, T-Pain, and Troye Sivan. Those names describe the original voice-and-style experiment; they do not establish that every artist’s catalog was available for the later restyling test.

November 12, 2024: restyling existing songs
The “Restyle a track” test changed the creative premise: instead of starting with an artist-associated voice and style, creators selected certain existing partner-provided songs and requested an AI treatment of them. These are successive experiments, not one unchanged feature.

YouTube’s current Help page describes Dream Track as a broader set of experimental tools for generating Shorts soundtracks from text prompts. It does not confirm that the original November 2024 “Restyle a track” control remains universally available.
How the restyling test worked
- Open the Shorts creation experience.
- Select an eligible official song.
- Choose “Restyle a track.”
- Describe the desired genre, mood, or transformation.
- Generate the unique approximately 30-second soundtrack.
- Use that soundtrack in a YouTube Short.
This was a reported test flow, not a promise that the same controls appear in every current YouTube app.

- Open the YouTube app and tap Create.
- Choose Short or Post.
- Tap Add sound, then Create Music.
- Select an artist or style.
- Describe the desired song in English. The documented prompt limit is 50 characters.
- Tap Create, preview the result, and continue editing the Short.

Who could use it?
The 2024 restyling feature was offered to a small group of creators. YouTube did not announce general access, a public application process, or a complete list of eligible accounts. The earlier Dream Track launch was also limited to selected creators in the United States and participating artists.
Current documentation says Dream Track is available in most countries outside the European Economic Area when the creator’s YouTube device language is set to English. U.S. users can also access it through YouTube Create. Eligibility can differ among creators, artists, and viewers, and rollout conditions can change.
Attribution, labels, and rights
What viewers see
YouTube said a restyled Short would attribute the original song in the Short and through the Shorts audio pivot page, and would clearly indicate that the soundtrack had been restyled with AI. Current Dream Track documentation likewise describes a text label for music created with Dream Track.

What the labels do not establish
An attribution or AI label is not a complete statement of copyright ownership, royalty calculations, or permission to exploit the audio elsewhere. YouTube limited the test to songs supplied through participating music partners, indicating a rights-managed product approach, but the cited public material does not specify contracts, training-data disclosures, revenue shares, or payment formulas.
Download and commercial use
The current Help page says Dream Track-generated soundtracks cannot be downloaded, although some Shorts containing them may be downloadable. It directs creators to YouTube’s monetization policies. Nothing in the cited documentation grants creators ownership, permission to release the audio on streaming services, or a blanket commercial license outside YouTube.

Dream Track was developed with Google DeepMind. The model family associated with the product is Lyria; later DeepMind material also refers to Lyria RealTime and says Dream Track-generated music is watermarked with SynthID. The terms are distinct:
- Lyria: Google DeepMind’s music-generation model family.
- Dream Track: YouTube’s product and experiment built around generative music tools.
- “Restyle a track”: The specific 2024 test for transforming selected existing songs.

What creators gained—and what they gave up

Vague or unusual prompts could also produce results that did not closely resemble the requested treatment. The tool was designed for quick, platform-native experimentation, not precision music production.
When the feature does not appear
No “Restyle a track” control
- The account may not be in the test group.
- YouTube may have withdrawn or changed the experiment.
- The region, device language, or account configuration may not qualify.
- The app may not be current.
- The selected song may not be in the partner-enabled catalog.
Check the account, region, app version, device language, and current Help documentation, but treat those checks as practical diagnostics rather than guaranteed fixes.
A song cannot be restyled
Only a limited set of official songs was enabled. General availability in YouTube’s music library did not imply eligibility for AI transformation.
The result is not a faithful remix
Preserving the essence of vocals and lyrics is not the same as preserving the original recording. Expect a generated interpretation, not multitrack editing.

A published Short later changes or loses its audio
YouTube’s general Shorts remix rules say remixed audio can be muted when the source creator restricts remixing, deletes the source, or makes changes that affect the remix. See YouTube’s remix guidance.

Current status
Availability: YouTube announced “Restyle a track” as a limited test on November 12, 2024. As of the latest cited Help documentation, Dream Track is described as an expanded suite available in most countries outside the EEA when the device language is English, with additional U.S. access through YouTube Create. That documentation does not establish that the exact 2024 restyling control is universally available.
Published Dream Track soundtracks can be remixed by other users through Shorts tools, while image posts using Dream Track are not eligible for those remixing features. Generated soundtracks themselves are not downloadable according to the current Help page.
