In February 2019, a physician-parent and pediatrician Free Hess documented a short self-harm instruction clip inserted into otherwise child-oriented cartoons. At least one video had been viewed through YouTube Kids and another was found on regular YouTube. The reported videos were removed after they were flagged. The evidence establishes a serious filtering failure, not a proven platform-wide conspiracy, a claim that every YouTube Kids cartoon was unsafe, or evidence that a child copied the clip.
What happened in 2019
A physician-parent encountered the material while a child was watching YouTube Kids. Several minutes into an apparently ordinary cartoon, a man briefly appeared, simulated self-harm and delivered method-related language. The parent stopped playback, reviewed the video and reported it. The video was removed.
Pediatrician Free Hess later documented another cartoon containing the same or substantially similar inserted segment. That video was also reportedly removed after documentation and reporting. Hess’s PediMom post and contemporary coverage by Ars Technica established an evidence trail beyond a social-media rumor. The original documentation is archived at PediMom.
This article does not reproduce the wording, gesture, timestamps or video. Repeating those details would make harmful material easier to find without adding explanatory value.

What the evidence proves—and what it does not
Directly observed or documented
- At least one inserted clip appeared in a child-directed video watched through YouTube Kids.
- A second substantially similar clip was reported on regular YouTube.
- The videos were flagged and reportedly removed.
- The incident was reported in February 2019 by Hess, PediMom and news outlets including Ars Technica.
Still unestablished
- The exact number of affected uploads or viewers.
- The identities, motive or coordination of the uploader or uploaders.
- Whether a network deliberately targeted children.
- Whether any child imitated the clip or experienced a clinically documented injury because of it.
- Whether the same specific file remains available in 2026.
Experts warned that young children could be frightened, confused, develop nightmares or become curious after exposure. That concern is not proof that viewing the material causes suicidal behavior, and the contemporary reporting did not establish a causal link to an attempt or death.
How could a clip enter a cartoon?
The documented case shows the outcome, but not a proven technical recipe used by the uploader. In general, an uploader can edit a short segment into a longer file, surround it with familiar characters, and use a benign title, thumbnail and children’s keywords. Automated systems evaluate metadata, images, audio, engagement and channel history imperfectly. A brief, context-dependent segment can be hard to identify, and a video may be uploaded, watched and reported before complete manual review.
This is a moderation and incentive problem rather than evidence that YouTube intentionally placed self-harm material in children’s programming. A child-friendly appearance can also create a false sense of security: a parent may sample the opening seconds while the harmful segment appears much later. Reuploads can return after one copy is removed, and recommendations—not only searches—can expose a child to an unexpected upload.
YouTube Kids is filtered, not a sealed, hand-reviewed library
YouTube Kids is a more limited, age-oriented product built from the wider YouTube ecosystem. YouTube says its systems and human reviewers identify material suitable for the service, but also says not every video is manually reviewed and that automated systems can miss inappropriate content (YouTube Kids content policies; parent information; available content and controls).

That architecture explains how the 2019 report could involve both products:
- YouTube: the broad, open platform.
- YouTube Kids: a filtered interface with age settings and parental controls.
- Supervised YouTube accounts: a separate transition option that gives children access to a larger, parent-managed portion of YouTube.
“Kids” branding means the service is designed to reduce exposure; it does not mean every item was personally inspected or that unsuitable content is impossible.
What YouTube said in 2019
In the response quoted by Ars Technica, YouTube said it worked to keep YouTube Kids family-friendly, accepted user reports, manually reviewed flagged videos around the clock, removed material that did not belong and was investing in parental controls such as hand-picking videos and channels. Those statements describe the company’s response; they are not independent performance measurements.
The current documentation retains the same practical limitation: filtering combines automated systems, human review and parent reporting, so a miss can occur before a report reaches a reviewer.

What YouTube’s rules say now
YouTube’s current suicide, self-harm and eating-disorders policy prohibits:
- Promoting or glorifying suicide or self-harm.
- Instructions for carrying out or concealing suicide or self-harm.
- Suicide or self-harm content targeted at minors.
- Graphic self-harm imagery and certain depictions of attempts, deaths, notes, methods or locations without sufficient context.
- Participation in, or instructions for, harmful challenges.
The separate child-safety policy prohibits misleading family content, including cartoons aimed at young children that contain self-harm or other mature themes, and using cartoons, puppets or family-entertainment characters to attract children while presenting adult themes.
Educational, documentary, scientific, artistic or public-interest material may discuss suicide or self-harm when context is sufficient. That exception does not turn concealed method instruction aimed at children into acceptable content. A policy ban also is not proof that every future evasion will be detected immediately.

“Elsagate” was a retrospective label for a broader wave of disturbing, deceptively child-oriented videos using recognizable characters or children’s themes. Ars Technica placed the 2019 incident in that context. The term is informal, not a formal category, and does not mean every video associated with it involved suicide content. Its useful lesson is the pattern: benign-looking children’s media can be used to attract young viewers to inappropriate material.

Controls parents can use
The standard U.S.-English YouTube Kids help pages describe three broad settings—Preschool (generally age 4 and under), Younger (generally 5–8) and Older (generally 9–12). Labels or age ranges can vary by geography and account setup.
- Approve content yourself: limits viewing to videos, channels or collections selected by a parent. It offers the strongest control but requires ongoing curation and reduces open-ended discovery.
- Turn search off: removes open-ended searching, but does not replace supervision or prevent every recommendation.
- Block: block an individual video or channel when something unsuitable appears.
- Report: send the item to YouTube for review; current controls are documented at YouTube Kids block and share controls and available-content guidance.
- Share selected content: a linked parent account can share specific videos or channels.
These are layered safeguards, not guarantees. Age settings provide a baseline filter; blocking and reporting are primarily reactive.
If a child encounters similar material
- Stop playback immediately. Do not replay the segment in front of the child.
- Check in calmly. Ask what the child saw and whether it felt frightening, confusing or related to thoughts of hurting themselves.
- Do not repeat the method. Explain in age-appropriate language that the video showed something unsafe and inappropriate for children.
- Preserve minimal evidence. Record the video URL, channel name, date and, if needed, a screenshot of the listing. Do not download, quote or redistribute the harmful segment.
- Report and block. Use YouTube’s reporting tools and block the video or channel in YouTube Kids.
- Escalate when needed. If the child expresses suicidal thoughts, has attempted self-harm or is in immediate danger, call emergency services. In the United States, call or text 988; call 911 for immediate physical danger.
- Seek follow-up care. Contact the child’s pediatrician or a qualified mental-health professional if distress persists, nightmares develop, questions become repetitive or new self-harm behavior appears.
The broader lesson
The 2019 case demonstrates that child-directed presentation and a “Kids” label can coexist with a moderation miss. It supports stronger supervision, rapid reporting and carefully chosen controls—not the claim that every cartoon is dangerous or that the platform deliberately caused children to self-harm. The responsible response is to remove access without amplifying the clip, ask the child what they understood, and treat any sign of suicidal thinking as a real safety concern.
